Bengaluru Palace Review 2026: Grand Exterior, Disappointing Interior

Bengaluru Palace, often touted as an unmissable stop on any trip to Bengaluru, India, promised a glimpse into royal Indian life, inspired by England's iconic Windsor Castle. With tales of ancient artifacts and aristocratic living, I set out with high expectations. Let's be upfront: this place, for me, will be remembered as a classic case of 'don't judge a book by its cover.'

We decided to do an 'open run' on a weekend, arriving a little before its 10:00 AM opening. We joined a small queue at the gate for a brief wait. Promptly at 10:00 AM, the gates swung open, and cars streamed in towards the palace entrance. Thankfully, parking was ample right in front of the palace, so we had no worries there.

The official ticket price is 300 Indian Rupees for locals and 500 Indian Rupees for foreigners (including Americans and Europeans). I stepped up to the counter expecting to pay the foreign rate, but the attendant surprised me by asking if I lived and worked in Bengaluru. When I confirmed, they kindly processed my ticket at the local rate! Children under 10 are free. A pleasant start, thanks to the friendly staff.

Starting the Interior Tour

Photography is strictly prohibited inside the palace. Initially, I thought this was to protect ancient artifacts, but after completing the tour, I developed my own theory. I'll save that spoiler for later!

The recommended tour route takes you through the interior first, followed by a stroll around the exterior grounds. However, stepping inside, the first thing we encountered was the restrooms – and they were a shock. For a city dubbed 'India's Silicon Valley,' where my family and I had mostly experienced modern, clean facilities, the smell and dilapidated state of these palace restrooms were utterly appalling. A palace bathroom in this condition? It felt like an ominous start.

The main interior tour then began. The exterior, clearly inspired by England's Windsor Castle, is undeniably a fantastic photo opportunity. However, having visited the actual Windsor Castle in the UK, the comparison was stark and unavoidable.

A Glimpse into Neglected Aristocratic Life

The biggest issue? It felt utterly unmanaged and neglected. It was hard to even grasp what they intended to showcase.

There was no logical flow, no storytelling, no thoughtfully arranged exhibits. With just a little care, this place could be the heart of Bengaluru tourism. Its current neglected state felt like a sad reflection of local government's oversight.

The Beauty of the Exterior: A Welcome Contrast

After enduring the interior, stepping back outside finally reveals the palace's true allure. The exterior, a magnificent homage to Windsor Castle, is truly beautiful. It genuinely transports you to a grand European city.

The castle walls, enveloped by lush greenery, and the gardens are surely a spectacular sight when flowers bloom in spring and summer. Especially impressive are the centuries-old trees surrounding the palace, boasting a grandeur rarely seen elsewhere.

Ironically, this 'beautiful exterior' is precisely why you should consider visiting, at least once. The castle viewed from the outside is magnificent, but it's truly disheartening to know its interior is in such a dismal state of disrepair.

Why is Interior Photography Prohibited?

My theory? Perhaps the internal photography ban exists because the interior is so poorly maintained that if real photos circulated, no one would bother visiting.

This incredible asset, with its centuries-old trees and magnificent castle walls, desperately needs proper management before it's too late. While Bengaluru might not be brimming with tourist attractions, this level of neglect feels disrespectful to visitors.

That said, if you focus solely on the exterior, it's still a must-see. And those expansive gardens are said to transform into a vibrant flower paradise during spring and summer.

It's truly a shame to witness Bengaluru's potential – vast land, abundant workforce, and growing development – not being fully utilized, a sentiment perfectly encapsulated by the Bengaluru Palace experience. This concludes my somewhat disheartening review.
