Having opened its doors back in 1889
and running strong for four generations,
I finally visited one of the oldest cafes in Lecce.
It's located right in front of
the Castle of Charles V—
the legendary Bar Cotognata Leccese.
While it's not a flashy, ultra-modern cafe,
its classic, vintage charm
truly makes you feel like
"Wow, I'm really in Europe!"
Let me show you around.

Bar Cotognata Leccese is
practically the birthplace of cotognata,
a traditional Lecce quince jelly dessert.
It's a beloved local hotspot
where residents flock for their morning coffee and breakfast.
Given its rich history, the prices are incredibly wallet-friendly,
making it the perfect spot to indulge guilt-free!
2. A Look Inside

From people popping in for a quick shot of espresso
to those grabbing boxes of pastries to go,
the cafe was buzzing with locals.

The variety of desserts was so overwhelming
that I stood there forever, totally spoiled for choice.
Although the indoor space isn't huge,
there are several outdoor tables,
and since many locals drink their espresso standing at the bar,
it never really felt too crowded.

There were plenty of beautifully packaged treats perfect for gifting.
And if you look behind the counter,
you'll find a letter of appreciation
from the Vatican Secretariat of State!
Plus, you can really feel the weight of history
radiating from those black-and-white photos on the wall!

Seriously, wouldn't you have a hard time choosing too?
Since the names of the treats weren't labeled,
I thought I'd have to play a guessing game,
but luckily, the owner speaks English!

Looking at these photos again makes my mouth water.
I wonder if I can try everything before I have to leave Lecce 🥹
Just like us, many people were packing up boxes of assorted treats,
while quite a few locals were walking out with whole pies.

We picked out the classic pasticciotto,
a crostata tart made with cotognata jam
(which is the origin of this bakery's name),
and a cream-filled pastry to try.

They packed them up beautifully
in this lovely, elegant box.

Before we left, they also gave us some almonds
coated in a sweet syrup to try on our way,
and oh my, these were an absolute treat!
3. Dessert Review
1️⃣
Pasticciotto

If you're visiting Lecce,
having one pasticciotto a day is practically a golden rule!
The oval-shaped pastry on the far left
is the famous pasticciotto.
The pasticciotto here
had an incredibly crispy crust
with a rich, buttery aroma that was absolutely top-tier.

When you cut it in half,
it's packed with a smooth, rich custard cream.
It wasn't overly sweet,
and the way it just melted in my mouth
was pure bliss.

It's the ultimate dessert to pair with a cup of coffee.
I am definitely going back for another before leaving Lecce! 😍
Aside from the classic version,
word has it that the pistachio and chocolate flavors are also amazing,
so I highly recommend ordering a few different kinds
to share and try!
2️⃣
Crostata

The Crostata
is a tart filled with cotognata jam,
which is the namesake of this very shop.
Now, hold on a second!
You might be wondering,
"What on earth is Cotognata?"
Cotognata is
a traditional fruit paste or jam made by slowly simmering quince,
a local specialty fruit, with sugar over a very long period.
Quince is known to be
a fruit closely related to the Chinese quince family.

It is much denser than regular jam
and has a deep, rich red color.
When you taste it, you can feel the unique, refreshing aroma of quince
and a deeply concentrated sweetness.
The Crostata, generously topped with cotognata jam,
offered a perfect harmony of chewy jam
and crispy tart crust.
It was honestly one of the best tarts
I've ever tasted in my life!
3️⃣
Bocconotto

This is a round cream pastry
gently dusted with a snowy layer of powdered sugar.

Inside, it's filled with custard cream,
but perhaps because the pasticciotto and crostata we had first
left such a powerful impression,
this one felt a bit ordinary in comparison.

It wasn't bad by any means,
but it lacked a bit of character compared to the other treats,
and the pastry itself had a somewhat strong egg aroma,
which left me slightly underwhelmed.
It was a pastry where the cream shone brighter than the bread itself.
4. Wrapping Up

Bar Cotognata Leccese is
a place where the antique vibe and the super-friendly staff
make the desserts taste even more magical.
Next time I visit,
I'm definitely pairing my treats with
a classic Caffè Leccese.
If you ever find yourself here,
the pasticciotto and crostata
are absolute must-tries!
Treat yourself to a recipe perfected over 130 years
and make your journey through Lecce even more special.
I hope my story helps you have
the most wonderful and delicious trip.
