Did you know that Lecce is home to

the oldest public museum

in the entire Puglia region?

It is none other than the Lecce Archaeological Museum,

also known as Sigismondo Castromediano.

Established back in 1868,

I paid a visit here thanks to a personal recommendation from my accommodation host.

Let me take you on a detailed tour!

1. Basic Museum Info

Quite a long name, isn't it?

It was named after

Duke Sigismondo Castromediano,

an archaeologist and patriot

who laid the foundation for this museum.

Even though there is so much to see,

admission is completely free,

making it a great place to drop by without any pressure.

Plus, it stays open until 8:00 PM, which is a huge bonus!

There are also English-speaking guides on-site,

so if you have any questions as you look around,

they'll gladly give you a friendly explanation.

2. Exploring the Museum

This place isn't just about displaying dusty old items;

it's a space that brings the entire history

of the Salento region to life at a single glance.

💜 Traces of the Messapians 💜

Long before Rome conquered this region,

the ancient Messapian tribe inhabited Puglia.

Here, you can discover their unique pottery and ancient artifacts.

Their pottery, with its stunning geometric patterns,

is truly beautiful—

you could say it's the very origin of Puglian design!

The unique wheel-shaped handles

are the defining signature of their pottery.

The Roman Amphitheater in the heart of Lecce

and the exquisite marble statues excavated from it

are proudly on display here.

Being able to see these intricate Roman sculptures

right before your eyes

is an absolutely breathtaking experience.

While the first and second floors of the main building focus on archaeological relics,

heading up to the 3rd floor of the adjacent building

brings you to the Pinacoteca (Art Gallery).

Here, you can admire masterpieces spanning the 14th to 18th centuries

created by brilliant artists from the Puglia region.

The guide at the entrance will kindly explain how to get there,

but for a quick heads-up:

just head to the right of the ground floor entrance,

take the elevator up to the 3rd floor, and you're there!

Here, you can truly feel the essence of

Lecce's unique religious art.

Not only religious art,

but also paintings showcasing Lecce in the old days,

and antique cabinets used long ago—

it's a place where you can admire a wide variety of artworks.

While exploring the archaeological relics was fantastic,

I also loved how rich and diverse the other exhibits were.

Influenced by ancient Greece

but infused with their own unique style, the Messapian vases

are incredibly captivating,

even for those who aren't familiar with archaeology.

There are countless pieces of pottery

that look straight out of a world history textbook.

Seeing them in person is truly fascinating.

The beautifully placed lighting

and multimedia resources scattered among the relics

ensure there's never a dull moment.

In particular, the spatial design is incredible—

even the shadows cast behind the relics are crafted to look like art.

One of the best things about

the Lecce Archaeological Museum

is that there are plenty of spots throughout

where you can sit down, admire the exhibits, and rest.

This space on the ground floor

features a variety of beautifully designed chairs

that you can actually sit on and experience,

so I ended up spending quite a while here.

On Saturdays, you can even enjoy

live piano performances for free.

Weekly recitals featuring piano solos

or duets with wind instruments are held,

which you can enjoy

by making a quick reservation through WhatsApp.
