Bangkok 5-Day Itinerary 2026: First-Timer's Guide
Ready to explore Bangkok? From the vibrant chaos of Khao San Road to the stunning views of Mahanakhon, here is your perfect 5-day itinerary for 2026.

With global travel costs and exchange rates fluctuating, planning a budget-conscious trip can sometimes feel overwhelming. Having explored Bangkok multiple times over the last few years, I wanted to put together a reliable, tried-and-tested route for first-time visitors looking to experience the absolute best of this vibrant city in 2026.
This curated 4-night, 5-day itinerary is designed to give you a perfect mix of culture, shopping, and iconic sights. Don't feel pressured to follow it step-by-step—simply save your favorite spots to your map and explore at your own pace!
Pre-Trip Essentials
Before you jet off to Bangkok, there are a few crucial travel prep steps you cannot skip. First up is your passport.
While many nationalities enjoy visa-free entry to Thailand for up to 30 or 90 days for tourism, your passport must have at least 6 months of validity remaining from your date of entry. It sounds basic, but passport expiration issues ruin countless trips every year. Double-check your dates!
Additionally, make sure to check the latest digital arrival requirements. Thailand frequently updates its entry registration portals (like the digital arrival forms). Completing these online within 72 hours of your departure will save you precious time at airport immigration.

When it comes to money, you have a few great options. You can bring crisp, clean $100 bills to exchange locally (high-denominator US bills get the best rates), or load up a multi-currency travel card to withdraw cash from local ATMs.
If you prefer exchanging physical cash, Superrich is the most reliable and popular chain in the city. You will find Superrich booths at major BTS Skytrain stations. If you happen to be near Nana Station, Vasu Exchange is another highly recommended spot with excellent rates.

To keep your budget simple, think of 100 Thai Baht as roughly ~$3. Keeping this quick conversion in mind will make shopping and dining much easier to track on the go.
Finally, make sure to download ride-hailing apps like Grab and Bolt before you arrive. Grab is incredibly convenient because you can link your credit card directly. Bolt is cash-only, but it is often about 30% cheaper than Grab.
The 5-Day Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival & Nightlife at Khao San
After landing at Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK), head straight to your accommodation to drop off your bags. Since most international flights arrive later in the day, keep your first evening light. Take a stroll down Khao San Road and the adjacent, slightly more relaxed Rambuttri Alley. The energy here is unmatched, filled with travelers from all over the globe.

A quick safety tip: avoid accepting drinks or unsolicited advice from overly friendly strangers in highly crowded tourist hubs. Stick to well-reviewed, clean indoor restaurants if you have a sensitive stomach, rather than jumping straight into heavy street food on night one.

Day 2: Historic Temples & Culture
Your second day marks the official start of your sightseeing. It’s time for the classic temple run.
While the Grand Palace, Wat Pho, and Wat Arun are all iconic, trying to tackle all three in one day can lead to serious temple fatigue. I highly recommend focusing on Wat Pho (Temple of the Reclining Buddha) and Wat Arun (Temple of Dawn) together for a fantastic half-day experience. Personally, I found the intricate details of Wat Pho and Wat Arun even more captivating than the Grand Palace.

Keep in mind that dress codes are strictly enforced at these sacred sites—no shorts or sleeveless tops are allowed. You can purchase a pair of light elephant pants or sarongs at the entrance, but you will get much better styles and prices if you buy them beforehand at local night markets.

Day 3: Shopping & Night Markets
Spend your third day diving into Bangkok's legendary shopping scene. Start your morning at Chatuchak Weekend Market. Because it is an open-air market, it gets incredibly hot by midday, so arriving early is key.

Grab a fresh fruit juice and wander the endless alleys. It takes about 2 to 3 hours just to scratch the surface, so keep moving and focus on items that catch your eye. Most vendors display prices clearly, so there is no need for aggressive haggling. It’s the perfect place to pick up souvenirs, elephant pants, and local crafts.

In the afternoon, head to ICONSIAM, a spectacular riverside shopping mall that has become a modern landmark of Bangkok.

For an amazing dining experience, head down to SookSiam on the ground floor. It’s an indoor replica of a traditional floating market, offering street food from all over Thailand in a clean, air-conditioned space.

If you prefer an authentic outdoor evening vibe, check out Jodd Fairs Night Market, located right off the MRT Thailand Cultural Centre station.

Travel Tip: If your hotel is near Asok (Sukhumvit), the MRT line makes it incredibly easy to combine Chatuchak Market and Jodd Fairs. If you are staying closer to Khao San Road, combining ICONSIAM with a scenic evening river cruise is your best bet.

Day 4: Day Trips & Skyline Views
For your fourth day, choose an adventure that fits your travel style. If you love history, take a day trip to Ayutthaya.

Located about 50 miles north of Bangkok, Ayutthaya was the historic capital of Siam from the 14th to 18th centuries and is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Booking a half-day sunset tour is the most comfortable and budget-friendly way to see these spectacular ruins.

If you'd rather stay in the city and relax, treat yourself to a visit to the King Power Mahanakhon Skywalk.

While the entry ticket is a bit pricey at 1,080 Baht (~$31), the experience is absolutely worth it.
Bangkok has plenty of rooftop bars, but many of them have strict dress codes and loud club atmospheres. If you don't drink or just want a more relaxed sightseeing experience, Mahanakhon is perfect.

Standing 1,030 feet above the city, it offers the highest panoramic views in Bangkok. Time your visit for just before sunset to witness a truly unforgettable golden hour over the cityscape.

Day 5: Souvenir Shopping & Departure
On your final day, head to Big C Supercenter or Gourmet Market to stock up on local Thai snacks, instant noodles, and sweet treats to bring home to friends and family.
Bangkok has a magnetic energy that keeps travelers returning year after year. Have an amazing trip exploring this incredible city!
