The Bancaja Cultural Center is
in a fantastic location,
making it incredibly easy to fit into your travel itinerary.

Since they mostly host temporary special exhibitions,
the ticket prices can be a bit on the higher side.
For the Joaquín Sorolla exhibition,
the admission was €10,
which gave me access to all of the ongoing exhibitions in the center.
2. About the Bancaja Cultural Center

The Bancaja Cultural Center (Fundación Bancaja) is
a non-profit foundation dedicated to driving
social and cultural development in Valencia.
They operate out of a beautifully preserved 19th-century historic building
that has been stunningly remodeled with a modern touch.
This space is especially famous for regularly hosting
exclusive exhibitions of world-renowned masters.
For the locals of Valencia,
it serves as a cherished cultural sanctuary where they can
easily enjoy high-caliber art in their daily lives.
3. Exploring the Joaquín Sorolla Exhibition

With the Sorolla Museum in Madrid temporarily closed
for an exciting expansion and renovation project,
its treasure trove of collections made a special journey
back to Sorolla's beloved hometown of Valencia.
Thanks to this rare occasion, I was able to see
59 of the master’s greatest masterpieces—
pieces that are rarely displayed together—right here!

Curated directly by Enrique Varela,
the director of the Sorolla Museum,
this exhibition offers a multidimensional look
at the artist's creative journey, from his early days
to the final masterpieces of his life.

What makes this exhibition even more extraordinary
is the inclusion of iconic works
that serve as the very symbols of the
Madrid Sorolla Museum.
Most notably, many of the featured works are from
the personal family collection that Sorolla and his wife, Clotilde,
cherished so deeply they refused to ever sell them.
Standing before them, you can truly feel
both his personal warmth and his immense artistic pride.

As soon as you step into the exhibition hall,
you're instantly greeted by his masterpiece paintings,
which feel like they've captured the dazzling Valencia sunshine
and bottled it right onto the canvas.

💜 The Horse's Bath (El baño del caballo) 💜
Right at the entrance of the exhibition,
the very first piece that catches your eye
is this stunning masterpiece.
Sorolla's signature water reflections
and his magical play of light reach their peak here.
It sparkles so intensely that a simple photograph
just cannot do it justice.

💜 Stroll on the Beach (Paseo a orillas del mar) 💜
This is probably the most famous
among all of Sorolla's works.
It depicts two elegant women walking along the beach,
who are actually his beloved wife, Clotilde, and their daughter.
Just gazing at it
fills your heart with such warmth.

💜 Sad Inheritance (¡Triste herencia!) 💜
This piece, part of Fundación Bancaja's permanent collection,
plays a pivotal role in this exhibition.
It is the monumental masterpiece that won Sorolla
the Grand Prix at the 1900 Paris Universal Exposition,
catapulting him onto the global stage
as an internationally acclaimed master.

💜 Maria in Biarritz (Maria en Biarritz) 💜
My personal favorite was this painting
of his daughter, Maria, standing on the shore
of Biarritz, a beautiful resort town
in the south of France.
The way the crashing waves
seem to glisten despite being on canvas
made it the most memorable for me.

This one also features Maria,
capturing a candid, lovely moment
of her holding a camera.

The portraits filled with his tender gaze
towards his wife and children,
and the peaceful garden series he painted in his later years,
instantly bring a sense of peace to your soul.

During his stay in Mallorca in 1919,
he captured the Mediterranean for the very last time.
With these incredibly passionate works,
the exhibition comes to a grand and majestic close.

The works he painted in
Cala de Sant Vicenç, Mallorca,
felt like a final, beautiful tribute
to the light he loved so deeply throughout his entire life.
4. Wrapping Up
