Hey there, fellow travelers! Lisa here, your go-to travel blogger.
Planning your dream trip to Bali?
If you thought all you needed was your passport, think again!
You absolutely need to read this before you go!!
Bali has a few essential things you need to prepare *before* you even arrive,
and many travelers get caught off guard at the airport!
✅ Bali Airport Name: Ngurah Rai International Airport (Denpasar)
In today's post, I'll cover:
✔️ Bali Entry Essentials + Must-Haves |
✔️ Step-by-Step Bali Airport Immigration Process |
✔️ Tips for Getting from Ngurah Rai Airport to Your Accommodation |
Let's dive in! 💚
1. Essential Preparations Before Arriving in Bali
Visa, Immigration Form, Airport Transfer

There are three main things you'll need to sort out before your Bali trip.
1. Electronic Visa on Arrival (e-VOA) – It's a Must! |

All foreign nationals entering Bali need a visa!
While it used to be common to purchase one on arrival at the airport, these days, most travelers apply for their e-VOA online.
There are third-party agencies that can help, but beware of scammers and inflated prices. I highly recommend applying for it yourself!

On-arrival visas are still an option, but the process can be complicated, and queues can be long. Applying for your e-VOA in advance is much simpler and more convenient.
You can breeze through immigration with just a QR code!

✅ Bali e-VOA Cost: ~$32 (equivalent of 500,000 IDR)
✅ Validity: 90 days from issuance, allowing a 30-day stay
✅ Issuance Time: About 1 minute (you'll receive it via email instantly)
✅ Application Time: Around 10 minutes
✅ Passport Validity: Must be at least 6 months from your entry date!
The application process isn't difficult, but there can be a few tricky parts.
I've put together a detailed, step-by-step guide for the Bali e-VOA application, so be sure to check out my other post:

2. Indonesia Customs Declaration Form |

Applying for your visa isn't the final step! You also need to complete the Bali Customs Declaration Form.
This can also be done online. I filled out my visa and customs form separately, but you can actually do both at the same time if you prefer.

You can submit the customs form starting 3 days before your trip, and you can even apply for your visa simultaneously through this portal.
Right here <<
(This is the official Indonesian government website, not a scam!)
The combined process isn't too difficult either.

As you fill out the details, you'll reach the second section, 'Travel Details,' where it asks if you already have an Indonesian visa.
If you've already applied, select 'Yes!'
If you haven't, select 'No,' and you'll be directed to the payment page for your e-VOA.
(Of course, if you've already applied, you won't need to pay again.)

Once completed, you'll receive your visa details and a QR code.
Make sure to screenshot this! You'll need to show it upon arrival.
3. Pre-Book Your Airport Pickup |

Finally, one thing I highly recommend adding to your Bali arrival prep list is booking an airport pickup in advance.
Having it pre-arranged means you can head straight to your accommodation as soon as you land, which is a huge convenience. Plus, it's often more affordable than hailing a Grab (ride-sharing app).
Outside Bali Airport, you'll encounter many taxi touts, which can be overwhelming and confusing, especially for first-time visitors.

If you book an airport pickup service in advance, your driver will be waiting with a name sign, so you won't have to drag your luggage around or feel lost. You can just hop straight into your ride.
✔️ No stress from pushy touts
✔️ Fixed price / no worries about overcharging ❌
✔️ Starting from ~$7 for two people!
Jimbaran | ~$7 ~ |
Kuta / Canggu | ~$8 ~ |
Ubud | ~$18 ~ |
Padangbai | ~$53 ~ |
✅ Drop-off available to Jimbaran, Kuta, Canggu, Ubud, Padangbai, and even Gili Islands!

I used KKDAY, which offered the best prices. You get free cancellation up to 3 days before your trip, the lowest prices guaranteed, and if your flight is delayed, the driver will wait for up to 2 hours for free, which really puts your mind at ease.

You can also request child car seats, so if you're traveling with family, keep this option in mind!

And here's a pro tip: use these discount codes for an even better deal!

2. Step-by-Step Bali Immigration Process
Once you land at Bali Ngurah Rai International Airport, here's the sequence of steps to follow:

After disembarking, follow the signs for "Immigration." Bali's airport is actually quite spacious compared to some other Southeast Asian airports!

Follow the 'Arrival Visa' signs, but since we've already applied for our e-VOA online, you'll be looking for the automated immigration gates.

This is the queue for on-arrival visas. Since we already have our e-VOA, head to the automated gates on the right!

Here, you'll scan your passport. There's a common point of confusion for many people here. ⚠️⚠️⚠️⚠️⚠️

Unlike some countries where the gate opens automatically when you hold your passport to the scanner, in Indonesia, you need to wait for a prompt on the screen that says to remove your passport before the gate will open!
The instructions are in English, so pay close attention to the monitor.

Next, show the customs officer the QR code from your pre-submitted Customs Declaration Form, and you'll be good to go!
How long does Bali immigration take? I'd say about 10 minutes, including the walk. It's incredibly quick if you're prepared!

After that, collect your luggage. And just like that, you've officially entered Bali!
3. Getting Around from Bali Airport
Once you've cleared immigration, it's time to head to your hotel or villa.

After collecting your bags and exiting, you'll see a line of airport pickup drivers holding name signs, interspersed with various touts.
Even arriving past midnight, I was surprised by how many people had pre-booked airport pickups.

If you haven't booked in advance, you might get pressured by touts and end up paying inflated prices. That's why I always make sure to arrange my pickup before I depart.

If you've pre-booked, simply ignore the touts and look for the driver holding a sign with your name on it.

Your driver will help you with your luggage and safely take you directly to your hotel. It's such a relief after a long flight!
I booked through KKday, and they offer drop-offs to Ubud, Jimbaran, Kuta, Canggu, Gili Islands, and more from Bali Airport! You can compare real-time prices, so you know you're getting a good deal.
Don't forget to use the discount codes I mentioned above!

4. Wrapping Up Your Bali Arrival

Preparing for your Bali entry might seem like a lot, but it's actually quite straightforward once you break it down.
Just focus on these three things, and you'll be set:
1️⃣ Apply for your e-VOA (Electronic Visa on Arrival) in advance.
2️⃣ Complete your All Indonesia Customs Declaration Form 2-3 days before arrival.
3️⃣ Book your airport pickup before you fly.
With these three preparations, you'll avoid any confusion or stress at the airport and kick off your Bali adventure smoothly!

Remember, airport pickup is often cheaper than Grab and drivers will wait for flight delays, so definitely book it ahead of time!
