For a September trip to Austria, do you really need a lightweight jacket?

I was actually walking around Hungary in short sleeves,

but when I got to Austria, it felt chilly.

In Hallstatt, I even had to pull out my lightweight padded jacket.

In Vienna, I wore a cardigan,

and in Salzburg, I was constantly putting on and taking off my outerwear.

That's how I managed!

In this post, I'll share my actual outfits for each city,

and recommend essential items for an itinerary with lots of movement.

My Austrian adventure took me to Vienna, Salzburg,

and Hallstatt.

Even when traveling within the same country,

it's better to check the forecast for each specific city and date you're visiting,

rather than just packing based on one city's weather report. Split your checks by location and date!

Always check the temperature, rain, and wind forecasts for your specific travel dates,

and tailor your outfits to how sensitive you usually are to the cold.

① Vienna: Layering with Long-Sleeved Cardigans and Outerwear

In Vienna, I opted for a long-sleeved cardigan with a skirt.

Some days, I brought a short-sleeved top and separate outerwear.

After wearing lighter clothes in Hungary, I felt the chill once I arrived in Austria,

so I made good use of my long sleeves and outer layers.

It even rained on some days in Vienna.

Beyond just thinking about clothing thickness,

make sure to check if you'll need an umbrella or raincoat.

If your itinerary includes indoor visits to palaces and museums,

along with strolls through gardens,

then consider whether your outerwear can be easily taken on and off.

② Salzburg: Adjusting Outerwear, Even on the Same Day

In Salzburg, I wore a long-sleeved top with jeans,

taking off my outerwear when it was warm and putting it back on when it got chilly.

If your plans include exploring Mirabell Gardens, the Old Town, and the Fortress all together,

it's smart to pack considering the transitions between indoor and outdoor spaces.

I highly recommend comfortable trousers and shoes you've already walked in a lot.

③ Hallstatt: Lightweight Padded Jacket and Even an Umbrella

In Hallstatt, I wore a **lightweight padded jacket and long jeans**,

and sneakers.

It rained, so I used an umbrella, and my outfit was completely different

from what I wore in Budapest.

If you're heading to Hallstatt,

don't just decide based on the Vienna forecast;

please **check the forecast specifically for your Hallstatt visit date**.

It's a great idea to **consider whether you're departing early and how long you'll be staying by the lakeside**.

When preparing your clothes for Austria, rather than packing every type of outerwear,

try to layer with clothes you already own.

1. Check for warmth and rain preparedness separately

A warm outer layer doesn't always mean it's waterproof.

**Check if your existing outerwear is waterproof**, and

if rain is in the forecast, **prepare an umbrella or raincoat**

2. Set a specific date for laundry

If you're traveling between multiple cities,

check if you'll need to pack immediately after laundry,

and if you'll have enough time to dry your clothes.

3. Choose shoes you've walked in extensively

**I recommend prioritizing shoes you've already walked in a lot**.

Rather than wearing new shoes for the first time right before your trip,

check if they're comfortable on your feet during everyday wear,

and if there are any uncomfortable spots when you walk for a long time.

If you're visiting Vienna, Salzburg, and Hallstatt together,

**check the forecast for each city on its respective dates**.

Even though it was all a September trip,

I wore different outer layers depending on the city and the situation.

it's hard to go back to your accommodation to get clothes.

**I recommend moving essential items to a small bag the day before**.

make sure to decide on your outfit and allocate time for changing.
