The Albertina is an art museum where you can discover modern and contemporary masterpieces by artists like Monet and Picasso, alongside a world-renowned collection of drawings and prints.

It's located diagonally across from the Vienna State Opera House, making it super easy to fit into your sightseeing route. Plus, even if you explore the major works and special exhibitions, about 2 hours is plenty, so it won't feel like a heavy burden on your itinerary.

In Vienna, there are actually two distinct museums: the Albertina and the Albertina Modern, so be sure not to get them confused when buying tickets!

If you're heading there to see famous works by Monet, Picasso, and others, you'll want to purchase an Albertina admission ticket, which is located diagonally across from the Vienna State Opera House.

Before my Vienna trip, I debated whether to visit the Albertina, so I ended up buying tickets on-site. However, a card payment error occurred, which was quite frustrating!

The euros were definitely deducted, but the ticket receipt didn't print correctly, so I had to explain the whole situation at the information desk.

Therefore, if you've decided to visit the Albertina in Vienna, I highly recommend booking in advance through a travel website before your trip.

There might be long queues for ticket issuance on-site, and if a payment error occurs like mine, you'll just waste time and get unnecessarily frustrated.

What's more, tickets sold on travel websites are usually cheaper than purchasing on-site or through the official website.

2. Opening Hours, Visiting Time

Albertina Opening Hours

Since they operate until 9 PM on Wednesdays and Fridays, it's perfect for a visit in the evening after exploring time-consuming attractions like Schönbrunn Palace or the Belvedere during the day.

Inside, you can focus your visit on the 1st and 2nd floors, which house the main works, and then explore the special exhibition in the basement.

I leisurely explored the works on the 1st and 2nd floors and briefly checked out the ground floor (0th floor) and basement (1st floor). Including a stop at the souvenir shop, it took me a total of about 2 hours.

If your Vienna itinerary is tight, focus on the main works on the 1st and 2nd floors. However, if you're an art lover or interested in the special exhibition, it's best to allocate more than 2 hours.

When visiting an art museum, it's always a good idea to know some of its representative works. Here are some of the Albertina's highlights:

Claude Monet <Water Lily Pond>

While many of Monet's Water Lilies can be found in Paris, France, you can also admire one right here in Vienna, Austria.

Pablo Picasso <Woman with a Green Hat>

The Albertina Museum houses several works by Picasso, and among them, 'Woman with a Green Hat' is a superb example of Cubism.

Coincidentally, I was wearing green too, so I took a photo with it!

What I personally loved was how often the frames were perfectly chosen to complement the artworks, just like the piece in the photo.

It seemed like a piece originally from Chicago, but it was on display at the Albertina!

On the basement (1st) floor, there was a special exhibition featuring paper expressed in three dimensions. It wasn't very large, and there were no corresponding audio guide explanations, so I just quickly browsed through it.

Even though it was a short visit, the artworks were largely intuitive and engaging, so I still felt it was worthwhile seeing.

Given that it's a museum with so many incredible works, the souvenir shop also boasts a lot of high-quality items. I highly recommend taking your time to browse and pick up anything that catches your eye!

4. Audio Guide

If you want to delve deeper into the artworks with detailed explanations, I highly recommend using the Albertina audio guide.

💸 Audio Guide: 5 Euros

Instead of renting a separate device, you listen using your own smartphone.

You can purchase the audio guide at the on-site kiosk, and upon entry, show your purchase receipt to receive a card with a QR code printed on it.

Scan the QR code with your smartphone, and it will link you to the audio guide page where you can select and listen to explanations as you view the artworks.

It's easy to use, and Korean is also available.

Since it's smartphone-based, you absolutely must bring your own earphones.

When you're exploring the museum, you'll see a headset icon and a number next to the artworks, just like in the photo. If you input this number into the audio guide, you can listen to the explanation for that specific piece!

It was really convenient not having to carry a separate device since you use your own phone, which means no extra baggage! But since it does use your phone's battery, it's definitely a good idea to bring a portable charger.

Waiting in line for the audio guide on-site can take a while, but with Klook, you can add it to your general ticket for just ~$5 extra.

The audio guide costs 5 Euros, which is about ~$6, so it's definitely much more advantageous to buy the package that includes it on Klook.

Although it might be listed as an 'English audio guide,' once you access the site, you'll find a selection of various languages to choose from!
