Today, I'm excited to share my review of Yufuin Hotel Shuhokan, where I recently stayed during my trip to Yufuin, Fukuoka! ✨
While planning my Yufuin getaway, I spent a lot of time searching for the perfect ryokan. However, traditional ryokans often come with a hefty price tag, making it tough to find one that truly fit my budget and desires.
After some serious online digging with my friend, we stumbled upon a gem that checked all the boxes: a fantastic room, an exquisite kaiseki dinner, and a relaxing onsen experience, all for an incredible value of around ~$64-$128 per night!

Yufuin Hotel Shuhokan is a hotel featuring a public bath, conveniently located just a 10-15 minute walk from both the Yufuin Bus Terminal and Yufuin Train Station.

We arrived at the Yufuin Bus Terminal and walked to the hotel. With luggage, it took us about 15 minutes at a leisurely pace, and without bags, it was a quick 10-minute stroll!

Right in front of the bus terminal, there's a Lawson convenience store, which was perfect for grabbing late-night snacks after soaking in the public bath. 😊
The hotel's proximity to our meeting point for the Yufuin departure bus tour the next day also made our travel plans incredibly smooth!

1. Room Type, Layout, and Cleanliness
Our room at Yufuin Hotel Shuhokan
The room we stayed in was the Mount Yufu View Japanese Style Room with 12 Tatami!
Basically, it's a traditional Japanese-style tatami room with stunning mountain views of Mount Yufu.
While it was a tatami room, meaning we slept on the floor, the bedding was surprisingly thick and comfortable, so we slept soundly without any discomfort.
The room size was more than ample for two people. We had plenty of space, even with two suitcases laid open!

Watching Mount Yufu from our window during sunset and as the morning sun rose was pure bliss—the perfect setting for a truly healing getaway! ✨
2. Kaiseki Dinner

When you think of Yufuin, you think onsen and ryokan, and when you think ryokan, you think kaiseki, right?! 😊
We booked a room that included the kaiseki dinner, and upon check-in, we were able to choose our preferred dinner time.
A staff member brought the meal right to our room at the designated time, which was incredibly convenient as we didn't have to go to a separate dining area.

Considering the price point of around ~$64-$128 per night, having such a beautiful kaiseki dinner included was truly exceptional!
The kaiseki was not only visually stunning but also tasted even better than we expected. It felt like a feast for both the eyes and the palate.
Chatting with my friend in our tatami room while enjoying the meal really made me feel like this was what a truly relaxing Japanese trip was all about!
3. Public Bath (Onsen)
One of the best parts of Yufuin Hotel Shuhokan was definitely the public bath!
When I visited, there weren't many people, so we practically had the place to ourselves, which made the experience even more enjoyable and peaceful!
Photography isn't allowed in the public bath, so I've included photos from their official website. In reality, it felt even cleaner and had a warmer ambiance.

We used it twice—once the evening we arrived and again the next morning. Starting the day by watching the sunrise from the open-air bath is a memory I'll never forget! Haha.
See the yukata I'm wearing? At check-in, you can pick up a yukata, tabi socks, and Japanese-style slippers in the lobby.
When heading to the public bath, you just need to bring your washing essentials, so no need to pack anything heavy!
(They have a variety of yukata colors too!)
Inside the women's bath, there are no lockable lockers, only large baskets for storage. So, I recommend leaving any valuables in your room.
4. Overall Review / Tips Before Your Stay
While there weren't any major downsides, one thing to note before booking is that the power outlets in the room are limited in location.
If you're only charging your phone, it's fine, but if you plan to charge a camera and power bank simultaneously, bringing a multi-outlet adapter would be a good idea.
Knowing this one small detail, we didn't experience any significant inconveniences during our stay.
My friend and I kept talking about how wonderful our stay was even after returning home. If I ever visit Yufuin again, I would definitely rebook this place! Haha.
I highly recommend Yufuin Hotel Shuhokan for those who find expensive luxury ryokans a bit much but don't want to compromise on room quality, dinner, or the onsen experience! 😊

It takes about 15 minutes if you are pulling a suitcase, or about 10 minutes without luggage. There is a convenience store in front of the bus terminal, making it convenient to buy late-night snacks or get around.
When you specify your preferred time at check-in, the staff will bring the meal directly to your room. You can enjoy your meal comfortably in your tatami room without needing to go to a separate dining area.
Inside the women's bath, there are no lockers with locks; belongings are kept in large baskets. As there is a risk of loss, it is recommended to leave your valuables in your room beforehand.
The number of accessible power outlets in the room is limited. If you want to charge a camera or a power bank at the same time as your phone, it is highly recommended to bring a multi-plug extension cord.
