Family Fun in Waikiki 2026: Kid-Friendly Spots & Hidden Gems
Explore Waikiki's best family-friendly destinations for 2026! From the Honolulu Zoo to breathtaking sunsets and resort fun, find perfect activities for kids and strollers.

Aloha, fellow explorers! Today, I’m excited to share some cherished memories from our family adventures in beautiful Hawaii, focusing on Waikiki.
This guide is specifically tailored for families traveling with young children, highlighting places that are easy to navigate with a stroller and offer plenty of fun for the little ones.
First up, the Honolulu Zoo!
If you’re planning an extended stay or anticipate visiting more than once, consider an annual pass – it's often a great value. The zoo isn't just about admiring animals; it also features a fantastic gift shop packed with animal plushies and a spacious playground perfect for kids to burn off some energy.
Packing a picnic to enjoy on the sprawling lawns is also a wonderful experience.

What makes the Honolulu Zoo special is its design, allowing animals to move freely in naturalistic habitats. The playground caters to various age groups, even featuring slides suitable for toddlers aged 2-3.
Just a heads-up: peacocks sometimes wander into the play areas, so keep an eye on your little ones to prevent any startled reactions!

Next, let’s talk food! Cinnamon's at the Ilikai Hotel is a must-try. While there's another location near Kailua Beach, the Ilikai spot boasts a more picturesque view. I highly recommend dining on the balcony overlooking the ocean – it’s simply stunning.

Many rave about their Red Velvet Pancakes, but I personally found their omelets to be incredibly delicious. And while some dishes might be on the sweeter side, don’t expect a 'taste of heaven' – it’s just good, hearty breakfast fare! Their Loco Moco is also fantastic. Be prepared for a wait at both the Kailua Beach and Ilikai locations, especially during peak hours.

Our go-to accommodation is the Hilton Hawaiian Village. Its biggest draw for families is the abundance of swimming pools, which kids absolutely adore. Even if you're not a guest, you can still explore the resort grounds; the first floor of the Hilton Village features a small shopping center with various boutiques and restaurants.
The kids also love the small pond teeming with diverse birds and fish.

Among the many Hilton resorts in Hawaii, the Waikiki location truly stands out for its incredible views. From our room, we could enjoy a panoramic vista of Waikiki Beach, and depending on the room's position, even catch a glimpse of Diamond Head.

The Hilton Hawaiian Village on Oahu isn't just one building; it's a sprawling complex of multiple resorts and hotels. Each tower offers unique views and amenities, so it's worth exploring different areas. For instance, you could stay at the Grand Islander and enjoy dining at another hotel within the village. With so many spots offering fantastic views, you don't have to stay confined to your room, and hotel restaurants are often less crowded, allowing for a more relaxed experience.

Waikiki Beach is just about a 10-minute walk from our room, so we found ourselves there almost daily when the weather was nice, building sandcastles and playing in the sand. My child absolutely loves sand play, so we picked up a Mickey Mouse sand toy kit from Walmart right after we arrived – highly recommend it!

If you're up for a bit of a drive, you can admire Kualoa Ranch from a distance. While we've visited Hawaii many times, we haven't actually done the Kualoa Ranch tour itself. Sometimes, just taking in the views from afar is perfectly satisfying. We often prefer to pack a picnic and enjoy the surrounding area.

Near Kualoa Ranch, you’ll find the beautiful beach near Mokoliʻi Island, often called Chinaman's Hat. This beach is wonderfully quiet and peaceful on weekdays, making it a great alternative to the often-crowded Kailua Beach if you're seeking a more serene experience. Do note that it gets lively with locals having BBQ parties on weekends!

Fort DeRussy Beach Park
Ever wonder why you see military personnel jogging along Waikiki Beach? It's because there's a military recreation area right there! The Hale Koa Hotel and its massive parking lot are part of Fort DeRussy. This expansive park, along with the publicly accessible U.S. Army Museum of Hawaiʻi, offers fantastic photo opportunities.

One of my favorite Hawaii photos was taken right here at Fort DeRussy Park. What's unique is the backlighting during sunset; with glass buildings opposite, you get beautiful light from both directions, creating stunning photo effects. You can find it at: 2055 Kālia Rd, Honolulu, HI 96815.
Ainahau Triangle

The Ainahau Triangle is a lovely spot for a stroll, with many birds for children to observe and play alongside. It’s a popular walking path and a gateway to Waikiki, though you might not see many people having picnics here.

My final recommendation is to simply enjoy the sunset at Waikiki Beach. While many associate Waikiki with surfing and water sports, the sunsets here are truly breathtaking. The beach stretches for a long distance, and those beautiful sunsets have created so many wonderful memories for us.

After the sun dips below the horizon, taking a walk along the shopping streets is a great way to continue the evening. Many shops stay open late, offering plenty of window shopping opportunities. There’s also a large Apple Store – perfect for a tech upgrade if the timing is right!

Waikiki is generally very stroller-friendly and accommodating to families with children, with easy crosswalks for safe navigation.

Of course, there's so much more to do in Hawaii – like spotting sea turtles, indulging in delicious grilled chicken, luxury shopping, savoring tuna dishes and steaks, enjoying DIY BBQs, and snorkeling. But for a fun and easy family trip with kids, these recommendations are a perfect starting point!
I hope this inspires your next family adventure to Waikiki. Happy travels!
