Getting to St. Stephen's Cathedral
📍 St. Stephen's Cathedral
Stephansplatz 3, 1010 Wien, Austria
📍 Stephansplatz
1010 Vienna, Austria
St. Stephen's Cathedral is located right in front of the U-Bahn station,
so I recommend using public transportation.
While there are also bus stops nearby in addition to the U-Bahn,
the streets can be narrow and crowded,
so taking the subway is faster and safer.

I bought and used a 1-day pass via the OBB app,
but you can also purchase one at the station kiosks.
If you're using a rental car, you can use the Stephansplatz Parking Garage
behind the cathedral,
but the parking fees are quite expensive and reviews aren't great,
so I'd recommend sticking to public transport.

However, the admission tickets are quite expensive, which made me hesitate.

North Tower (Elevator) | 8 euros
South Tower (Stairs) | 8 Euros

and in this case, you can buy them upon arrival at the venue.
A full visit usually takes more than 3 hours.

(Mon-Sat: 10:00 AM, 11:00 AM, 11:30 AM

Please note that the tour itself takes about 30 minutes.
The South Tower is accessible via stairs,
while the North Tower has an elevator.
Consider your travel itinerary and visit dates to choose between
a partial or full visit.
If you want to see everything, discounted full admission tickets are also available.
However, if you are traveling with children aged 14 or under,
you can get 1+1 admission when purchasing an adult full admission ticket,

2. Free Interior Viewing Areas
The Euro exchange rate was quite high during my visit, and
I generally prefer exploring architecture and natural landscapes over
museums, art galleries, or guided tours. So, I decided to stick to
exploring the cathedral's interior and the North Tower.

With only one day planned for sightseeing in Vienna, I got ready
bright and early and arrived around 9 AM.
When I entered, the line wasn't long, and
it wasn't crowded inside. However,
after about 30 minutes to an hour,
many visitors started arriving in groups.

Entry to St. Stephen's Cathedral itself is free, but
the front area was sectioned off by a fence,
making it impossible to go further inside.

On weekdays, you can pay a fee for an interior visit,
and explore the front sections of the cathedral.
As it happened, the day I visited was a public holiday,
and a mass was in progress, so I couldn't enter the inner area.
While entry would have been possible in the afternoon after mass,
it wasn't feasible for me to return later due to my itinerary, which was a bit disappointing.
Make sure to check for European public holidays before your visit!

Behind the barrier, you'll find a souvenir shop and
spaces for prayer.
I bought rosaries as gifts at the souvenir shop, but
remember, only cash payments are accepted there.
I lit a candle in the prayer area by inserting coins, and
I also noticed a card payment kiosk for donations nearby.

The high ceilings, intricate carvings,
and the resounding sounds during mass were
truly magnificent.

My husband and I were especially thrilled as this was our first trip to Europe,
and St. Stephen's Cathedral, chosen as our very first destination,
was absolutely everything we had imagined Europe to be.
With statues packed everywhere,
Glistening stained glass catching the light,
The entire interior exuding a holy atmosphere,
I found myself **sincerely offering a prayer** as well.

While moving through the inner passage to the North Tower observation deck,
I could also catch a glimpse of the front area where a mass was in progress,
and **the magnificent scale of the cathedral's interior was truly overwhelming.**
If possible, **I highly recommend visiting on a weekday morning**
**to explore the cathedral's interior.**
3. North Tower Observation Deck by Elevator

St. Stephen's Cathedral has two towers:
the South Tower and the North Tower.
The South Tower requires climbing 343 stairs,
while the North Tower has an elevator.
Since I was **planning to explore all day** on this particular day,
I only visited **the North Tower with the elevator.**

About 5 to 6 people, which seemed to be the capacity,
go up in a **very small elevator.**
Since there's only one elevator moving up and down,
**during peak hours,**
**the waiting time tends to be quite long.**
Around 9:30 to 10 AM,
it was relatively quiet with no waiting,
so I could ride right up without delay.

Once I reached the top of the North Tower,
**the cityscape of Vienna unfolded before my eyes.**
Not only are there no tall buildings around,
but the charming European buildings
looked adorably like miniatures.

At the observation deck, major buildings in each visible direction
were explained with photos.
It was fun to find each one and compare.

Although the slightly cloudy weather was a bit disappointing,
**the orange rooftops**
**and the spires scattered throughout**
still allowed me to truly **savor the Eastern European vibe.**

There were some parts under construction for restoration,
making it difficult to capture perfect photos,
but it seemed to be a part of Vienna's everyday life.

With one of St. Stephen's Cathedral's symbols,
**the mosaic tile roof and pointed spires in the background,**
I also took photos at **the North Tower's photo zone.**

In the North Tower, you'll find a massive bell known as Pummerin.
It was originally crafted in the 17th century but was lost in a war,
and this is the magnificent restored version.
They say it's Austria's largest bell, a true testament to resilience!
The space where Pummerin resides is enclosed by glass,
making it a bit tricky to snap a photo right alongside it.
But you can get a fantastic view by stepping right up to the glass.
While there's an elevator to the observation deck,
do note that there are some sections upstairs that require using stairs.
This means it might be challenging for strollers or wheelchairs to access certain viewpoints, so plan accordingly!
4. Top Photo Spots to Capture the Magic!

Honestly, getting that perfect souvenir photo of St. Stephen's Cathedral can be
surprisingly tricky.
The thing is, the sheer scale of the cathedral is so immense compared to the narrow surrounding alleys
that it's quite a challenge to fit it all into a single frame!
There's an alley directly opposite the main entrance.
If you step back into that alley and shoot towards the cathedral,
you might get a little bit of the neighboring buildings in the frame, but it allows you to
capture both yourself in a full-body shot and the magnificent cathedral!

Next to the South Tower, you'll find a lively square,
usually bustling with various street vendors.
When I tried to snap some shots there,
I found the area a bit cluttered,
which didn't quite capture that classic European vibe I was dreaming of.

So, by stepping back a bit further,
I managed to capture a more natural shot, incorporating the charming surrounding buildings.
It's a really popular spot, so
instead of full-body shots, I'd suggest zooming in 2x for some beautiful upper-body photos!

As you take a stroll around St. Stephen's Cathedral,
you'll discover its magnificent beauty from countless angles.
While some areas around it might seem a little less polished,
I found that these spots felt less crowded with sightseers,
which was actually perfect for capturing more natural, authentic photos!
5. Insider Tips for Your Visit!

First off, the entrance to the South Tower is actually located on the exterior of St. Stephen's Cathedral.
If you're facing the main cathedral entrance, you'll find it to your right,
marked by a clear sign on the right-hand wall.

I originally headed to the opposite side, thinking it was the way to the North Tower.
To my surprise, the area was blocked off for construction
and cluttered with advertisements – quite confusing!

Here's a key tip: the entrance for both the North Tower and the Catacombs tour is actually located *inside* the cathedral.
I found an area blocked off due to an ongoing mass, but when I explained
I wanted to visit the North Tower, they graciously let me pass through.
If you happen to visit during mass, like I did,
don't hesitate! Just speak to someone at the entrance and they'll guide you in.
