Vienna & Salzburg Itinerary 2026: Austria's Must-See Spots & Day Trips

I've traveled to Vienna twice and Salzburg once,

but Austria has so many incredible places to explore

that I'd love to go back again!

So today, for those of you planning your first trip to Austria,

I've put together a super simple guide

covering Vienna and Salzburg,

including must-visit spots and recommended itineraries.

Must-Visit Spots in Austria

✅ Vienna and Salzburg are the main attractions.

✅ It's easiest to travel from Vienna to Salzburg.

✅ For day trips, I recommend Český Krumlov, Hallstatt, or Munich.

Along with the Czech Republic, Austria is a heart of Eastern European travel.

Though landlocked, without direct access to the sea,

the Alps cover about two-thirds of the country,

making it a popular destination for trekking and skiing enthusiasts.

Without a doubt, the most famous travel destinations in Austria are

Vienna and Salzburg.

Since there are no direct flights to Salzburg,

travelers usually visit Vienna first

before heading on to Salzburg.

For nearby excursions, I highly recommend Hallstatt or Český Krumlov!

If you'd like to get a little taste of Germany, you can also visit Munich

for a casual day trip or an overnight stay.

Recommended Places to Visit in Vienna

✅ Perfect for those who love culture, art, and history.

✅ You'll need at least 3 nights and 4 days in Vienna.

✅ Have fun discovering the filming locations of the movie <Before Sunrise>.

Vienna, the capital of Austria,

is a hub of history, culture, and art,

making it the perfect destination for those who love to see and experience new things.

It's a city that feels classic, yet also wonderfully vintage,

making it a delight to explore every street and alley!

There's so much to see, you'll need at least 3 nights and 4 days.

In Vienna, it's convenient to explore based on the Ring (Old Town),

dividing your visits between inside and outside the Ring.

Based on St. Stephen's Cathedral, which is in the center of the Ring,

the travel times by public transport are listed below, so you can plan your routes accordingly!

* Prater Amusement Park: approximately 12 minutes

* Belvedere Palace: approximately 22 minutes

* Schönbrunn Palace: approximately 25 minutes

Beyond the places mentioned above,

Vienna is also a ​filming location for the movie <Before Sunrise>,

so I also went around searching for the places featured in the film.

This was a fun little quest of its own,

Recommended Places to Visit in Salzburg

✅ Day trips to nearby Munich, Hallstatt, or Cesky Krumlov are possible.

Just a 3-hour train ride from Vienna lies

Salzburg, the birthplace of Mozart!

It's also famous for the movie <The Sound of Music>,

so much so that there are even tours dedicated to these two themes.

Truth be told, since these two themes are the main attractions in Salzburg,

it might feel a little dull if you're not particularly interested in them.

However, unlike Vienna, Salzburg itself

boasts a truly beautiful and unique landscape intertwined with nature,

so you might actually find yourself loving it even more than Vienna!

The city of Salzburg is actually quite small,

so if you explore diligently, 3 days and 2 nights is plenty.

However, if you're looking to explore nearby areas,

I highly recommend Hallstatt, Cesky Krumlov, and Munich!
