📍 Lower Belvedere

While Belvedere Palace is located outside the Ringstrasse,
it's still conveniently close to many of Vienna's main attractions.
The entire complex, from the Upper Belvedere to the gardens and the Lower Belvedere,
is quite vast and extensive.
Therefore, your approach might vary depending on which part you plan to visit first.

I personally traveled by bus from my accommodation to visit the Upper Belvedere.
After getting off at Wien Quartier Belvedere station,
I walked through Belvedere Lake and entered the gardens.

The paths are wide, and the signs are clear,
so I found it easy to navigate on foot.

I arrived early in the morning right at opening time,
and it was wonderfully quiet and uncrowded,
which made it perfect for taking photos.

If you're planning to visit by car,
you can get a 6-hour parking discount
by using a nearby public parking lot.
I highly recommend checking this in advance before you go!

Upper Belvedere Palace operates on a 100% reservation system.
To visit at your desired time,
I recommend booking in advance.
If you want to visit on the same day,
tickets for afternoon slots might still be available,
so be sure to book online before visiting.
After comparing the official website and Klook,
I chose Klook because it was cheaper.

If you're planning to visit with underage children,
admission is free for those under 19,
so you only need to reserve a time slot on the official website.
Please select 'Upper Belvedere'.

After selecting your visit date and time,
simply add the number of 'Children and youth under 19'.
Since I was visiting with other adults, I only checked the prices,
and then proceeded with my booking on Klook.
It was about 15% cheaper compared to the exchange rate at the time,
and I liked how easy it was to book.

Once your booking is complete, you'll receive a voucher.
I recommend saving the QR code image on your phone for entry.
You can conveniently book your tickets at an affordable price on Klook.

2. Entering Upper Belvedere Palace & Exploring the Baroque Garden

When I arrived on the day of my visit, I did notice a ticket office there.
On the YouTube channel 'Poonghyanggo', they mentioned buying same-day tickets from this very office, but when I arrived right at opening, the ticket office was closed.

As I moved towards the front of the building,
the expansive garden immediately caught my eye.

I booked for 9:15 AM,
and even though I arrived right at the 9 AM opening time,
people were already lining up before it even opened!
Initially, I wanted to explore the gardens a bit more before heading inside,
but it started raining, so we took shelter near the entrance
and ended up joining the entrance queue ourselves.

The garden view from the entrance was truly stunning.
Even though the rain made it look a little gloomy,
it still captured that unique Viennese atmosphere perfectly.

After our visit, the rain cleared up, revealing a beautiful sky,
and sure enough, the gardens were bustling with people.
Personally, rather than visiting after exploring the Upper Belvedere,
I'd recommend arriving a bit earlier to enjoy the peaceful gardens
and capture plenty of beautiful photos.
3. Klimt's 'The Kiss' and Other Must-See Masterpieces

We were able to enter as the gates opened precisely at 9 AM.
After scanning the QR code from our booked voucher,
we could enter the Upper Belvedere palace.

Inside, there was a spot where you could rent audio guides
and a cloakroom where you could check coats, strollers, and more.

Following a golden tip from fellow Korean travelers,
I headed straight for Klimt's 'The Kiss' as soon as I entered,
making my way to the farthest room on the right on the first floor.
(The entrance lobby is considered the ground floor.)

After all, as it's the most iconic masterpiece of the Belvedere Palace,
I heard it can be difficult to get a good view later in the day.
Seeing it in person, it was much larger than I expected,
and its shimmering golden details were truly captivating.

Thanks to arriving right at opening,
the area in front of the painting was relatively uncrowded.
I even met a lovely Korean couple in front of the artwork
and we were able to take commemorative photos for each other.

Beyond 'The Kiss,' you'll discover many more of Klimt's masterpieces
showcased right alongside it.

Even if you're not an art expert, you'll find yourself surrounded by iconic pieces
that you've likely encountered at some point!
As I wandered through the exhibits,
I noticed several groups enjoying guided tours.
Although I was a bit disappointed that the audio guide didn't offer Korean,
if you're keen to dive deeper and truly understand the stories behind the art,
a guided tour would be an excellent choice!

While the art itself was captivating,
I found exploring the building's interior to be equally delightful!
Each interconnected exhibition room boasted unique ceilings and pillars,
keeping me captivated and constantly looking around to soak in all the intricate details.

The enormous central hall on the first floor was absolutely magnificent,
evoking visions of grand medieval balls once held within its opulent walls.

Ascending to the second floor, I got a breathtaking view of the hall
and was amazed to witness a fascinating detail of the ceiling that I had only ever seen on screen with my own eyes.

What's more, the garden view from the windows offered a completely different perspective
than what I had seen from the entrance. The higher I went,
the more clearly the intricate patterns of the garden revealed themselves, it was truly stunning!

Beyond the paintings, I discovered a captivating room dedicated to sculptures.
Amidst some rather intriguing and abstract pieces,
I found myself face-to-face with busts of Emperor Franz Stephan and Empress Maria Theresia,
iconic figures of the Austrian Habsburg imperial family, proudly displayed side by side.

Beyond Klimt's masterpieces, Egon Schiele's works are undoubtedly
among the must-see highlights at the Belvedere.
Egon Schiele, another iconic Austrian painter, was actually mentored by Klimt in his younger days.
His paintings, characterized by their distinct, powerful lines, were all incredibly striking and left a lasting impression.

But what truly captivated my gaze the most was
a painting by Claude Monet.
The beautifully soft portraits and serene pathways within his work radiated an undeniable sense of beauty.

As I wandered through all the exhibition halls on both the first and second floors,
I was also thrilled to discover Klimt's captivating landscape paintings.
As I continued to gaze at pieces I hadn't been familiar with before,
it was truly fascinating to start noticing the artist's distinctive characteristics shining through.

Initially, I admit, I thought the admission fee was a bit steep,
but once I started exploring the incredible artworks inside, every penny felt completely worth it!
Even though I'm not an art expert, it was such a profoundly rewarding experience that
I even found myself wondering if I should have adjusted my schedule to include a guided tour.
A tiny bit of regret even crept in for not doing so!
4. The Belvedere Souvenir Shop

At the end of your visit, you'll find the obligatory, yet delightful, souvenir shop.
They had exhibition guides available in multiple languages,
and I was happy to see a Korean version among them!

There were also magnets featuring famous artworks,
but I didn't end up buying any as the print quality felt a bit uninspired.

Unsurprisingly, the most sought-after items were naturally
the merchandise featuring Klimt's masterpieces.
There was an especially vast array of 'The Kiss'-themed goodies!

They even had socks adorned with an incredible, almost bewildering, variety of artworks.
Yes, art-inspired socks!

Notebooks, books, postcards – you name it!
The shop was literally brimming with Klimt-themed merchandise.

From pouches and mugs to mini trays and even specially blended teas,
these items are truly perfect for gifts or for keeping as a cherished memento of your visit.
I personally picked up a small tray featuring 'The Kiss',
and it was a wonderfully satisfying purchase because it barely takes up any space and is super lightweight.
While the prices might feel a little steep due to current exchange rates,
I highly recommend picking up at least one item that will serve as a beautiful, lasting reminder of your trip.
