On my last night in Vienna, as I was scouting Google Maps for a morning running route, I stumbled upon something incredible: a stunning public swimming pool literally a minute's walk from my accommodation! Talk about a hidden gem right under my nose!
A quick search revealed it was Amalienbad, Vienna's municipal public pool and thermal spa. My heart sank a little when I realized I'd only discovered it the night before my departure. If only I'd known sooner, my mom and I could have unwound from our travels in its soothing thermal waters.
Nevertheless, my morning visit was so fantastic that I just had to share my experience.
Amalienbad: The Essentials

Isn't the interior absolutely breathtaking, especially considering its rather unassuming exterior? Amalienbad is far more than just a swimming pool; it's a cultural landmark, an Art Deco indoor swimming complex that epitomizes the 'Red Vienna' era.
Constructed between 1923 and 1926, this historic venue officially opened its doors a century ago in 1926. Its architectural hallmarks include opulent Art Deco styling, stunning ceramic mosaic tiles in the Jugendstil (Art Nouveau) style, and symmetrical, vintage wooden locker doors.

Reumannpl. 23, 1100 Wien, 오스트리아
You'll find it right in front of Exit 1 of the Reumannplatz station on Vienna's U1 subway line.

Admission Fees:

As a municipal public pool, Amalienbad offers excellent value for money, especially given its impressive facilities and ambiance.
After checking their website, I found the 6:45 AM - 7:50 AM slot perfectly fit my schedule and was incredibly affordable at just ~$3 (2.6 EUR). I'd read Google reviews mentioning that staff might not speak much English, so I opted to purchase my ticket online beforehand.
You can buy tickets directly from their official website, which you can find linked on Google Maps. It's ironic, but I'd passed by this subway station countless times over two days without ever noticing this gem!
I arrived promptly at 6:45 AM, but despite the early hour...

...just look at all these people! Viennese folks certainly seem to be early risers.
To enter, I simply scanned the QR code from my pre-purchased ticket at the machine, which then dispensed...

...a wristband with a chip. This wristband is your key to the lockers.

Once you have your wristband, head up to the locker area. The lockers are grouped into small rooms, each with about 20 lockers, so you can pick any convenient spot to change.
You place your shoes beneath the locker, change into your swimsuit, then simply press your wristband chip against the circular sensor on the locker door to lock it. It's a bit different from the partitioned changing rooms you might find elsewhere, but it's easy to get used to.

The main pool features 109-foot (33.3-meter) lanes, with depths gradually increasing from approximately 5 feet (1.5 meters) to 13 feet (4 meters). If you get tired during your swim, there are comfortable areas to rest by the poolside.
I simply left my towel and toiletries by the side of the lane while I swam, and everyone else seemed to do the same. So, no worries there! Of course, any valuables should always be secured in your locker.
After my swim, I enjoyed a brief soak in the warm thermal pool to relax my muscles before heading for a quick shower and returning to my accommodation.
Jinny's Insider Tips for Amalienbad!
☝️ Language Barrier? No Problem!
The staff primarily speak German, so to ensure a smooth entry, I highly recommend purchasing your ticket online via their website beforehand. This way, you just scan your QR code and you're in!
✌️ Come Prepared in Your Swimsuit
If you're uncomfortable changing with others in the open locker rooms, consider wearing your swimsuit underneath your clothes. Unlike some places, people here typically change, then head straight to the pool without a pre-swim shower. While swim caps are technically required, you'll notice many people swimming without them.
Amalienbad Overall Impressions

Atmosphere: ★★★★★
Would I Revisit?: ★★★★★
The water felt reasonably clean, and for such an affordable price, swimming in a pool that feels like a movie set was an absolutely incredible experience. If you find yourself in Vienna and craving a swim, I highly recommend stopping by Amalienbad.
I hope this post helps you plan your visit. Happy swimming, everyone! ❤️
