The National Heritage Media Art event is once again lighting up the nights at Tongdosa Temple in Yangsan, Gyeongnam province this year. I visited last year, and the blend of the tranquil temple with stunning lights and music was truly memorable. If you're looking for an enchanting night out or a scenic drive in Yangsan, this is a must-see!

This year's theme is 'Tongdo, Reaching Tranquility,' featuring eight unique art installations. Before you go, I'll share everything you need to know: the 2026 schedule, timetable, how to best experience the media art, parking tips, and even stroller accessibility.

1. Tongdosa Media Art 2026 Schedule

The 2026 National Heritage Media Art at Tongdosa Temple in Yangsan runs for approximately three weeks, from Monday, September 28, 2026 to Sunday, October 18, 2026. The event takes place throughout Tongdosa Temple grounds, and admission is free with no prior reservation required.

While a quick tour of the entire course might take around 30-40 minutes, if you plan to take photos and admire each artwork, allow for an hour or more. Since the main gate closes for entry at 8:00 PM, it's best to avoid arriving too late.

2. Timetable

Programs 1 through 7 run continuously from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM, allowing you to enjoy them at your leisure. The only part requiring a specific time check is 'Flower of the Mind,' the main media art show held at Haejangbogak.

Personally, I recommend arriving around 7:00 PM, exploring the initial installations, and then catching the 7:30 PM main show. From my visit last year, I found that walking from the Tongdosa entrance to the inner areas takes a bit longer than expected. Even if you plan to see the 8:30 PM show, make sure to arrive well before the 8:00 PM last entry.

3. How to Enjoy the Media Art

Yangsan Night Drive Course Recommendation

This year's experience begins at the Yeongchukchongnim Gate (Gate of Beginning), leading you through 'Light of Welcome,' 'Beyond Memory,' 'Moonlight Waterway,' 'Fog Garden,' 'Gate of Truth,' and 'Silence of Light,' culminating in 'Flower of the Mind.' Notably, the river section from Samseongbanwol Bridge to Wolyeong Bridge features captivating fog and light effects, and you can also enjoy media art at Daeungjeon Hall.

It'll be fun to compare this year's installations with last year's! Most installations run continuously throughout the event, so you only need to keep track of the main show times. Since some areas are dark at night, it's a good idea to wear comfortable shoes, like sneakers.

Flash photography is prohibited. Using your smartphone's night mode can help you capture more natural and beautiful photos.

4. Parking Tips

When it comes to the Tongdosa Media Art event, I really want to emphasize parking. There are two main options: the Tongdosa Main Gate Parking Lot and the Tongdo Fantasia Parking Lot. Here's a comparison:

While the Main Gate Parking Lot is closer, it's not very large, and the access road itself is quite narrow. Last year, when I arrived a little after 6:00 PM, it was already full, and there was significant traffic congestion around the entrance. Instead of waiting for a spot at the Main Gate lot, I recommend setting your GPS for the Tongdo Fantasia Parking Lot. It's only a short walk to the Tongdosa entrance from there, and it can actually save you time.

5. Stroller Accessibility

If you're visiting with children, you might be wondering about stroller accessibility. The good news is, strollers are absolutely welcome! During my visit last year, I noted that while some areas within the temple have stairs, there are gentle ramps and accessible paths available for wheelchairs and strollers. Using these paths, you can navigate with a stroller quite easily. However, keep in mind that some areas can be dimly lit at night, and weekends might be crowded. So, if you're with little ones, plan to move at a slower pace.

Combining Tongdosa's serene nighttime ambiance with contemporary media art, this is a fantastic night out in Yangsan, Gyeongnam, perfect for families, couples, or friends. With no reservations or admission fees required, it's an easy and enjoyable outing.

If you visit, remember the 8:00 PM last entry time and the main show times at 7:30 PM and 8:30 PM. On weekends, it's best to park at Tongdo Fantasia and walk, rather than trying to drive all the way to the temple entrance.
