The Best Budget Hotel for a Quick Layover

If you're planning a trip to the Phi Phi Islands, scheduling a quick stopover in Old Town Phuket at the beginning or end of your itinerary is a brilliant move.
I initially booked a brief "half-night" stay at The Besavana Phuket just to rest after a late flight.
But it was so incredibly budget-friendly and charming that I ended up extending my stay!
Here is my full review of this hidden gem.
1. Perfect Location in Phuket Old Town

First things first: if your stay in Old Town falls over a weekend, finding a spot within walking distance of the Sunday Walking Street Market is key.
(It gets incredibly crowded, so being able to pop back to your room for a quick break is a lifesaver!)
The Besavana is located right in the heart of Old Town.
Famous local restaurants like One Chun, as well as the bustling morning market, are all just a short stroll away.

The hotel perfectly captures the essence of the neighborhood with its gorgeous Sino-Portuguese architectural details.
It truly feels like you're soaking up the authentic Phuket Old Town vibe right from your accommodation.
2. Booking The Besavana Phuket

A double room costs around ~$38 per night!
For this location and quality, it's undeniably one of the best budget hotels in Phuket Old Town.
Agoda | ~$38 | |
Traveloka | ~$38 | |
Trip.com | ~$38 |
When I booked, Agoda had the lowest base rate.
However, if you use a Traveloka promo code, it might end up being even cheaper!
(I've left a discount code at the very end of this post.)
3. Crucial Check-in & Check-out Info

Pay close attention to this, especially if you're arriving on a late flight!
⏰ Check-in: 2:00 PM / Check-out: 12:00 PM
⚠️ Front Desk Hours: 7:30 AM ~ 9:00 PM
(Emailing in advance is mandatory for late check-ins!)
Since many international flights land late at night, you might not reach Old Town until past 11:00 PM.
Make sure you send them an email beforehand to coordinate.

I replied to the email address provided in my Agoda booking confirmation, and they responded within 5 minutes!
They explained that once my room was assigned on the day of arrival, they would email me the self check-in instructions.

Sure enough, around 2:00 PM on my check-in day, the email arrived.
They leave your room key in a designated lockbox with your name on it and provide the passcode via email.
Self check-in was an absolute breeze!
4. Room Condition & Amenities

Since this is a budget-friendly heritage property, there is one thing to note: there are no elevators. ✔️
If carrying luggage up stairs is an issue, definitely request a ground-floor room when booking.

I was placed on the second floor, which was just a short flight of stairs, so it wasn't a problem at all.
(Also, remember: no durian allowed in the rooms!)

The door features both a standard key lock and an interior physical safety latch.
Personally, whenever I travel internationally, I absolutely love having a physical chain or latch on the door!
Even if it's just to prevent accidental intrusions (like housekeeping mixing up times), having that extra layer of security over just a keycard gives me immense peace of mind.

I took these photos right after checking in late at night, so they look a bit dim.
With just the room lights on, it's cozy.
But once you pull back the curtains in the morning, the room is flooded with gorgeous natural light.

You get this beautiful, lush green view—I think those are banana trees right outside the window!

The air conditioning was spotless, and the mini-fridge and electric kettle were perfectly clean.
They provide 2 complimentary bottles of water, 2 pool towels, plus 2 hand towels and 2 large bath towels.

There's a TV (though I never turned it on) and a convenient desk where I enjoyed some fresh local fruit.
The floors are tiled rather than carpeted, which always feels so much cleaner to me in tropical climates.
I was slightly worried about the wooden furniture, as humidity in Southeast Asia can sometimes take a toll on it.
But everything here was incredibly well-maintained!
As a frequent traveler to Southeast Asia, I've learned the hard way that poorly kept wooden furniture can be a nightmare, but The Besavana passed with flying colors.

Now, onto the bathroom.
It has a solid, proper door that closes completely.
If you're traveling with a partner, you won't have to worry about the awkwardness of those frosted glass doors or sliding panels that offer zero privacy.

I brought a travel shower filter with me, and I was thrilled to see that the filter barely changed color!
Honestly, the water quality here seemed better than some of the 5-star resorts I've stayed at.
5. The Pool & Breakfast Options

The main photo spot at The Besavana is definitely right by the pool!
It's a beautiful blend of Old Town's Sino-Portuguese heritage and lush, tropical Thai aesthetics.

The pool itself isn't massive, but it's very clean.
I saw a few guests taking a dip during the midday heat, though it never felt crowded.

It's the perfect spot to lay out your towel and read a book.

As for breakfast, it seems The Besavana used to offer it in the past, but they currently do not serve breakfast on-site.
Instead, they give you a 15% discount coupon for a lovely cafe right across the street.
The cafe is modern, has great AC, and serves fantastic iced Americanos, so I gladly used my coupon there.
Alternatively, there's a bustling morning market just a 3-minute walk away.
Grabbing some fresh tropical fruit from the market to pair with your morning coffee (and maybe a classic 7-Eleven toasted sandwich) is the ultimate authentic Thai breakfast experience!
That wraps up my independent review of The Besavana!
If you're looking for a budget-friendly, culturally immersive stay in Phuket Old Town—even if it's just for a quick layover—I highly recommend it.
I'll leave a Traveloka discount code valid through June 2026 below.
Be sure to check for the lowest rates before you book, and have a fantastic time in Phuket!
