There's also a municipal art museum right in front of the palace, making it a great spot to visit together.

As you step into the alley behind Hwaseong Haenggung Palace,
the vibrant local hotspot, Haengnidan-gil, unfolds before you.
I used to work near here about 10 years ago,
so it's a familiar place to me personally,
but every time I visit, it gets even more hip, with a wider variety of things to see and do.
It's truly expanding!

As one of Gyeonggi-do's representative must-visit spots in Suwon,
charming, atmospheric cafes and artisanal shops,
along with alleyway eateries, line the streets, making every step a delight.
Many shops are renovated traditional houses,
which gives them a more authentic Korean and atmospheric feel,
and they blend beautifully with the surrounding fortress scenery,
making it a favorite destination for international visitors too.

At the end of a pleasant stroll through the alleys, you'll encounter Suwon Hwaseong Fortress,
which truly showcases the pinnacle of late Joseon Dynasty architectural technology.
It's an incredible fortress, really!
Built by King Jeongjo of the Joseon Dynasty out of filial piety for his father, Crown Prince Sado,
and to strengthen royal authority,
it's the fortress of a planned city.
It was scientifically completed using the 'geojunggi' (a type of crane) invented by the great scholar Jeong Yak-yong,
earning recognition for both its ingenuity and architectural beauty.
It's rightfully inscribed as a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site.
What a legacy!

While it's beautiful during the day, at night, the fortress walls are illuminated,
creating an even more
atmospheric and enchanting scene for you to enjoy.
Climbing along the fortress walls, you can feel the tranquil breath of history
while taking in the unique charm where modern cityscapes blend with ancient heritage.
It's a truly special walk!
