In late March 2026, I had the incredible opportunity to visit
Štrbské Pleso in Slovakia.
I know, it might sound unfamiliar to many of you –
it was certainly a new name to me!
Štrbské Pleso: Slovakia's Alpine Gem
Štrbské Pleso is a stunning glacial lake and high-altitude resort town
nestled within the majestic High Tatras mountain range,
Slovakia's renowned national park.
Sitting at an elevation of approximately 4,477 feet (1,364.6 meters),
this alpine lake was carved by glaciers
and is the second-largest mountain lake in the Slovak Tatras region.
From Debrecen, where I live, the drive to
Štrbské Pleso took us about 3 hours and 30 minutes.
As we drew closer to Štrbské Pleso,
the imposing High Tatras mountains began to emerge.
Though the weather wasn't ideal on the day I visited,
obscuring some of the views,
I could still sense their immense grandeur and beauty > <
What to Do at Štrbské Pleso?
Spring - Fall
1. Take a leisurely stroll around the lake (approx. 1 hour)
2. Enjoy a charming rowboat ride on the lake during summer
3. Explore famous alpine hiking and trekking trails
Winter
A premier destination for winter sports like skiing, alpine skiing, and snowboarding.
📍 Koliba Restaurant Penzión - Starý Smokovec

Upon arrival, our first order of business was lunch.
We stopped at a restaurant conveniently located next to the funicular parking lot,
and it turned out to be a hidden culinary gem!
Everything was delicious, but the mashed potatoes were a standout.
I've never had such perfectly smooth and creamy mashed potatoes at a restaurant before.
Both my husband and I were thoroughly impressed.
Riding the High Tatras Funicular in Slovakia
A round-trip ticket costs 16 EUR.
However, if the weather isn't cooperating,
I'd recommend skipping it entirely. You won't see a thing –
it's like stepping into a real-life Frozen wonderland!
During the winter months,
they operate the Tatra Ice Cathedral and a sledding track.
Since I visited in late March 2026, the sledding season had already concluded,
so we only got to see the Ice Cathedral before heading back down. ㅠㅠ
Keep in mind that the sledding track
typically runs from December through mid-March.
Walking around the lake was truly the most beautiful and peaceful part of our trip.
Isn't it absolutely gorgeous?
I can only imagine how stunning it must be in the summer!
I'm already dreaming of a return visit.
After about 30 minutes of walking, due to the chilly weather,
we decided to warm up with an early dinner.
📍 Reštaurácia Furkotka
Poštová 4054/11, Štrbské Pleso, 059 85 Vysoké Tatry, Slovakia
We ordered the set menu for four, which included
duck breast, chicken breast, pork tenderloin, grilled beef,
grilled corn & cheese, cabbage salad, and even cherry peppers.
And right next to it was
a huge basket of potatoes!
It was a truly satisfying meal for all four of us.
A quick tip: supermarkets here tend to close early,
so I recommend picking up any essentials you need promptly.

The fresh snow made it look even more picturesque.

Would Revisit: Absolutely, especially on a sunny day!
I honestly believe that if the weather had been better,
this could have been one of my all-time favorite travel destinations.
I'm longing to see the magnificent High Tatras mountains again.
We stayed at the APLEND Lake Resort,
which has a kitchen, making it perfect for families
or anyone planning to cook their own meals. It was spotless and highly recommended.
However,
next time, I'm determined to stay at the Grand Hotel Kempinski High Tatras.
It's right by the lake, and you can enjoy the stunning Tatras mountain views
while relaxing in their spa. It's definitely on my bucket list!
I encourage you to compare these two accommodations
and choose the one that best suits your travel plans.

Based on my experience, it takes approximately 3 hours and 30 minutes to drive from Debrecen to Štrbské Pleso. Štrbské Pleso is a glacial lake located in the High Tatras mountains of Slovakia, at an altitude of approximately 1,364 meters above sea level.
A round-trip ticket for the High Tatras Funicular costs 16 EUR. If the weather is bad and visibility is poor, it's recommended to boldly skip the funicular ride.
The toboggan run at Štrbské Pleso typically operates from December until mid-March. When I visited, it had already closed, so I only saw the Ice Dome and came back down.
When you order the 4-person set menu at Reštaurácia Furkotka, you'll get duck, chicken breast, pork tenderloin, roast beef, grilled corn & cheese, cabbage salad, and cherry peppers. Additionally, a generously sized basket of potatoes is provided, ensuring a hearty meal for four people.
