Your first day is mostly about travel. Even if you catch a morning flight, by the time you navigate the airport and get to the city, it'll likely be around 3 or 4 PM. In the winter, the sun sets early, so don't try to cram too much in.
Plus, international arrivals and immigration can take a while, leaving you ready to relax.
First Stop in Sapporo: The Lights of Susukino
For Day 1, I suggest a simple plan: check into your hotel, find a great local restaurant for dinner, and maybe grab a nightcap at an izakaya or snacks from a convenience store.
The Susukino district is buzzing with fantastic restaurants and bars.
While you're there, you have to get a photo with the iconic Nikka Whisky sign. It's a Sapporo rite of passage!

If you've still got some energy, wandering through the city's winter illuminations is a lovely way to end the night. They're not necessarily a destination in themselves, but they add a magical sparkle to an evening stroll.

This is a full-day excursion and can be quite tiring, which is why it's best to tackle it early in your trip when you're full of energy.
While you could rent a car, driving in Hokkaido's heavy snow can be stressful and dangerous if you're not experienced.
A bus tour is the perfect solution. You can relax, visit multiple stunning spots effortlessly, and get fascinating insights from a local guide. It's a traveler favorite for a reason!

You can easily explore its main attractions in half a day, making it a perfect and easy day trip.
Odori Park Christmas Market
Back in Sapporo, head to Odori Park. This park is the city's heart, hosting festivals year-round. Until Christmas Day, it's home to a magical Christmas Market, and in February, it transforms for the world-famous Sapporo Snow Festival.
The Sapporo Christmas Market was one of my most anticipated spots, and it didn't disappoint. While not as large as its European counterparts, it perfectly captures that festive, cozy atmosphere.
A quick tip: it gets very crowded in the evening, leading to long waits for food, which can be a bit pricey. I suggest visiting in the late afternoon before the dinner rush.
You can find a wide variety of charming Christmas ornaments and souvenirs, and their prices are quite reasonable. It’s a wonderful place to soak in the holiday spirit without flying all the way to Europe!
Sapporo TV Tower Observatory
After enjoying the market in Odori Park, head up the Sapporo TV Tower for a breathtaking panoramic view of the city.
The best time to go is just before sunset to watch the city transition from day to night.
The city's illuminations switch on around 4:30 PM, so if you're on the observation deck before 4:00 PM, you'll be in the perfect spot for the show.
Even before the lights turn on, the view of the snow-covered city is absolutely beautiful.
