Riad Basma Marrakech Review 2026: A Budget-Friendly Medina Gem
Looking for an authentic and affordable stay in Marrakech? Riad Basma offers incredible value in the heart of the Medina, just steps from Jemaa el-Fna Square.

Searching for an affordable place to stay in Marrakech, Morocco?
Look no further than Riad Basma!
While planning my Moroccan adventure, I noticed many travelers opted for a unique type of accommodation: a Riad.
Intrigued by their charm, which is quite different from standard hotels, I decided to stay exclusively in Riads throughout my Morocco trip! With a generous itinerary, I even hopped between several Riads to experience their diverse atmospheres.
Among them, Riad Basma stood out as a fantastic budget-friendly option, especially for late arrivals from the airport when you just need a comfortable place to rest your head.
📌Recommended For
1. Travelers seeking budget-friendly accommodation (around ~$38 per night)
2. Those who want to be close to Jemaa el-Fna Square

What is a Riad?
A Riad is a traditional Moroccan house or palace with an interior garden or courtyard, typically featuring a fountain.
While the exterior might appear modest, stepping inside reveals a tranquil, often ornate, inner sanctum. This central courtyard design is its most distinctive feature.
Riads typically have fewer rooms, offering a quieter atmosphere and a more personal connection with the staff. They are the perfect way to immerse yourself in the local culture within the Marrakech Medina.
For these reasons, many travelers to Marrakech prefer Riads over conventional hotels. However, because they are 'boutique' accommodations, they often book up quickly.
I often found that the beautiful Riads I discovered in other travel blogs were already fully booked when I tried to reserve them.
So, if you find a Moroccan Riad you love, make sure to book it swiftly!✨
Riad Basma Location

Riad Basma is nestled within the Marrakech Medina, just a short walk from Jemaa el-Fna Square.

Out of the three Riads I stayed in, this one was the closest to Jemaa el-Fna!
✨Just a 5-minute walk!✨
Keep in mind that taxis can't enter the old Medina (city center), so they'll drop you off at the entrance to Jemaa el-Fna. I ended up pulling my suitcase for about 12 minutes to reach the Riad.
This is a common point for all Riads located within the Medina, unless you arrange a private Riad taxi. If you're traveling with elderly parents or find long walks challenging, it's worth paying a bit extra to have the Riad arrange a taxi for you.
Since it's just one alley away from Jemaa el-Fna Square, I felt quite comfortable walking back even late at night.
* The alleys around Jemaa el-Fna can be a bit confusing. Occasionally, you might encounter some individuals (even children) who try to trick you by saying, "This alley is closed, I'll show you the way." Just ignore them and follow Google Maps. The paths are perfectly fine; they're likely just trying to get money from you.
Room Condition & Stay Review

As mentioned earlier, Riads are characterized by their central courtyards. Since this Riad is a budget-friendly option, it didn't feature a fountain or a swimming pool.
Nevertheless, the unfamiliar Riad structure and vibrant color palette were captivating.

When booking the cheapest rooms in Riads, you'll often find yourself on the ground floor – this was consistent across all the Riads I stayed in. Riad Basma was no exception.
Since I arrived at night, the photos came out a bit dark. The room was somewhat dim in the evenings due to only indirect lighting, but as I primarily used it for sleeping, it wasn't an issue.

I recommend bringing your own toiletries, as only soap was provided.
Also, there were no slippers, so it's a good idea to pack a pair.

The Riad had two upper floors, and it seemed fully booked with guests.
I was initially concerned about noise, given its proximity to Jemaa el-Fna and the open Riad structure, but it was surprisingly quiet.
The peaceful atmosphere, despite being so close to the bustling square, was a huge plus!
