Port Stephens Day Tour Review: Weather, Outfits, and Sandboarding Tips

When planning a trip to Sydney, Australia, there are two day tours that top everyone's bucket list: the Blue Mountains and the Port Stephens Tour. Sliding down massive sand dunes on a sandboard is an incredibly unique adventure that you absolutely cannot miss. However, the biggest wild card is always the weather. In this guide, I will share essential tips on tracking the weather, choosing the perfect outfit, and making the most of your desert-like coastal experience.
What is Port Stephens?

Port Stephens is located along the stunning coastlines of Anna Bay and Nelson Bay, about a 2.5-hour drive (approx. 124 miles) north of Sydney. It features the largest moving coastal sand dunes in the Southern Hemisphere. While it is technically a sand dune system rather than a true inland desert, the endless sandy vistas will make you feel like you have stepped into another world.
This incredible destination offers a variety of activities, including sandboarding, dolphin-watching cruises, 4WD beach tours, camel riding, visits to the Oakvale Wildlife Park, and local winery tastings.
Choosing the Right Port Stephens Tour

Most travelers opt for one of two main tour packages to explore Port Stephens:
1️⃣ Dolphin Cruise + Oakvale Wildlife Park
This is the ultimate option for families traveling with children or anyone who prefers wildlife over wine. While you won't find quokkas at Oakvale, the absolute highlight is the chance to get up close and hand-feed free-roaming kangaroos!
2️⃣ Dolphin Cruise + Winery Tasting
Australia is world-renowned for its vineyards. This route includes a stop at a local winery where you can enjoy tastings and pick up unique souvenirs, making it a highly popular choice for couples and honeymooners.

How to Get There: Self-Drive vs. Guided Tour
There are two primary ways to travel from Sydney to Port Stephens:

1️⃣ Renting a Car & Self-Driving
From Sydney CBD, you will take the M1 motorway north past Newcastle toward Nelson Bay, which takes about 2.5 hours. Expect to pay around $16 USD in tolls along the way.
✅ Only recommended if you are fully comfortable driving on the left side of the road and are familiar with Australian traffic rules. Highway patrol is very active, road rules regarding roundabouts are strict, and traffic fines can be exceptionally high.

2️⃣ Booking a Guided Day Tour
This option includes a convenient pickup in Sydney CBD, a dolphin-watching cruise, lunch, the sand dunes experience, and entry to the wildlife park or winery.
✅ Highly recommended for a seamless, stress-free itinerary. All entry tickets are pre-booked, so you can skip the long ticket lines entirely!

📌 I tried booking a tour last-minute during the busy holiday season in late December, but everything was completely sold out. I ended up driving myself, and honestly, it was incredibly tiring. Below, I'll explain exactly why booking a tour is the smarter option.
Port Stephens Weather Tips
Anna Bay Forecast

To track the local weather, the AccuWeather app is highly recommended. Be sure to search specifically for "Anna Bay," "Nelson Bay," or "Port Stephens" rather than just Sydney.
If you are visiting during the summer months (December to February), keep an eye out for wind forecasts. High winds on the dunes mean blowing sand, so packing a light scarf or face mask is a great idea.

Because Port Stephens is over 120 miles away from Sydney, the weather can be completely different. Being right on the coast, the wind can shift rapidly. On sunny days when temperatures exceed 86°F, the heat reflecting off the sand makes it feel closer to 104°F. Preparing the right clothing is crucial!
What to Wear: Outfit & Gear Guide
Tops, Pants, and Footwear

The UV index in Australia is notoriously high, and there is zero shade on the dunes. Because sand gets absolutely everywhere when you slide down, wearing shorts is highly discouraged. For footwear, sneakers will quickly fill up with sand, so sandals, slides, or Crocs are much more practical.

Sunglasses are a must to protect your eyes from the intense glare of the white sand, and a secure hat will keep your hair from whipping around in the coastal breeze.

💡 Recommended Packing List:
✅ Wear a tank top layered with a light, long-sleeve linen shirt to protect your skin from the sun.
✅ Opt for fitted leggings or comfortable long pants. Avoid shorts, as the hot sand can cause friction burns, and sand will inevitably find its way into your clothes!
✅ Wear sandals, flip-flops, or Crocs. When you actually ride the sandboard, going barefoot is the best option.
✅ Sunglasses, high-SPF sunscreen, and a secure hat are absolute essentials!
The Sandboarding Experience

To reach the best sandboarding slopes, you will board a custom 4WD vehicle that takes you deep into the heart of the Stockton Sand Dunes.

Be sure to follow the safety guidelines provided by the operators. Sliding barefoot is highly recommended, and standing on the board is strictly prohibited. The activity runs rain or shine. Avoid skirts, and make sure your sun protection is secure.

While the tour operators usually provide a bottle of water, I highly recommend bringing an extra bottle of your own to stay hydrated in the heat.

✅ How to Ride: There is no formal queue; you simply climb up the dune at your own pace and slide down. Coming down from the top is incredibly fast and thrilling! If you want to slow down, just drag your hands in the sand to act as brakes.
To prevent sand burns or scratches from friction against the hot sand, wearing long pants is definitely the safest choice.

✅ Near the beach entrance, there are camel rides available. The lines were massive, and it costs about $26 USD for a 20-minute ride. With easily a one-hour wait in the direct sun and no shade, I decided to pass on this experience.
My Honest Port Stephens Experience

Sandboarding down these coastal dunes is a uniquely Australian adventure that you can't easily experience anywhere else. After about three climbs up the steep dunes, my legs were exhausted, so I spent the rest of my time capturing photos. The contrast of the white sand against the blue sky makes it an absolute paradise for photography!

While I had to drive myself due to last-minute planning, I strongly recommend booking a guided day tour instead of self-driving. Here is why:
📌 Parking is a Nightmare: The public parking lot at Anna Bay is incredibly small. We spent over 40 minutes just driving in circles looking for a spot. With a tour, you get dropped off right at the staging area and picked up seamlessly.
📌 No Waiting in Lines: Buying sandboarding tickets in person meant waiting in yet another long queue. Additionally, the public restrooms at the dunes are crowded and not the cleanest. Tour guides know the best, cleanest restroom stops along the route—a total lifesaver. Honestly, the parking and ticket queues exhausted us so much that we didn't even have the energy to visit the wildlife park afterward!

Save yourself the stress, pack the right outfit, and book a guided tour that includes Oakvale Wildlife Park. If you book in advance, you can secure a 10% discount. Learn from my mistake and go with a tour—it is worth every penny!
