First Day Review: Is the Oslob Whale Shark Tour Possible Even if You Can't Swim?

The Cebu Oslob whale shark tour was the activity my child
looked forward to most, right from when we started planning our trip.
However, I was a bit worried about the long travel time
from Mactan to Oslob and the need to start early in the morning,
wondering if it would be okay to do it right on our first day of travel.
Having to travel another 3-4 hours after our flight wasn't a comfortable plan,
but considering we'd have to wake up early anyway even if we departed from a Mactan hotel,
going straight from the airport on day one
actually wasn't a bad idea.
Not only did our family, who loves swimming and water activities,
come along, but also a friend's family who can't swim.
Today, I'll share our experience from the first day of our trip with the kids,
including our Oslob whale shark tour review, criteria for choosing a Fast Track,
what to prepare, and tips for getting discounts on OKAMO products.

1. Why We Departed Directly from Mactan Airport to Oslob
This Cebu trip was a journey with a friend's family,
making us a group of 7 people.
Since we had a large group and kids traveling with us,
we thought a private vehicle would be more comfortable than a join-in tour,
so we booked a private tour from the start.

When we arrived at Mactan Airport in the early morning,
our vehicle was waiting for us in the airport parking lot.
The clothes we wore from Korea were too hot for Cebu's weather,
so we changed into rash guards in the airport restroom
and departed immediately.
Quick Summary of Our OKAMO Tour | |
Departure Point | Cebu Mactan Airport |
Travel Time | Approximately 3-4 hours |
Tour Type | Private Vehicle (7 people) |
Package Name | OKAMO 2D1N |
Accommodation | Moalboal Trayshade |
From Mactan Airport to the Oslob whale shark tour spot,
it takes about 3-4 hours by car.
After arriving at the airport, we immediately got into the car. Due to road conditions,
it was hard to get comfortable sleep in the car,
but since it was our first day of travel, we had the energy to manage the journey.
Even if we had spent a night at a Mactan hotel before departing,
we'd still have to wake up early to get to Oslob.
If you're taking an early morning arrival flight,
going directly from the airport is a viable option
as it can help reduce both accommodation costs and travel time,
making it worth considering!
2. On-Site Waiting vs. Fast Track Selection

Thanks to going straight from the airport
without stopping at a hotel, we arrived at the Oslob whale shark spot
relatively early.
The tour operator guided us through everything related to ticketing
and handled it all, so we could easily follow along
even when we were half-asleep.
Since we departed directly from the airport, our arrival time was early,
and we thought it would be perfectly fine to wait
even without a Fast Track.

However, after we arrived, quite a crowd started to gather.
If you have young children or your family finds waiting difficult,
I recommend pre-selecting a Fast Track.
But if you can arrive early,
deciding after assessing the situation on site also seems like a good approach.

3. Whale Shark Experience: Possible Even Without Swimming Skills

The Oslob whale shark experience involves taking a small boat, like the one in the photo above,
to the viewing area, then either getting into the water to snorkel
or watching from the boat.
Our family all knows how to swim and
loves water activities, so after getting used to the water,
we took off our life vests and enjoyed ourselves.

On the day we visited, there were large whale sharks and
more than 20 small whale sharks...?

With whale sharks appearing from multiple directions,
we were careful not to accidentally touch them as they swam by.
We had fun, but cautiously! 😉
While the number of whale sharks can vary each day,
we were told that the day we went was a particularly lucky one,
with quite a lot of them gracing us with their presence.
Can you still go on the Oslob whale shark tour even if you can't swim?
The family of four friends who came with us couldn't swim at all,
and they weren't usually big fans of water activities.
The dad and son put on life jackets and went into the water,
snorkeling and adapting surprisingly well!
Meanwhile, the mom and daughter didn't go into the water at all,
preferring to watch from the boat.

You might think just watching from the boat would be a bit of a letdown, but
seeing the sheer size and graceful movements of the whale sharks as they approached the surface,
both of them agreed it was absolutely worth coming! 😊
Even within the same family, some chose to go into the water
while others preferred to watch from the boat, allowing everyone to enjoy the experience in their own way.
So, there's no need to skip the Oslob tour just because you can't swim!

The viewing time is only about 30 minutes,
which might seem short when you consider the travel time from Mactan,
but it was definitely enough time to snap some photos
and witness multiple whale sharks.
Even though we had to travel for a long time starting from dawn,
thinking about the lasting memories our child made,
it was an incredibly worthwhile itinerary for our family.
4. Preparing Snorkel Gear and GoPro: Our Experience
Should you bring your own snorkeling gear?
We used rented life jackets,
and while tour operators do lend out snorkel gear,
we were a bit concerned about hygiene and preferred the comfort of a well-fitting mask.
So, we decided to brave the extra luggage and brought our own.

Our dual-breather snorkel mask had a special feature:
when the lens fogged up due to the temperature difference between the water and the outside air,
it had an internal wiping function, just like a car's windshield wiper.

When we were watching the whale sharks in Oslob,
it was incredibly convenient not to have to take off our masks to clear them.
If you're planning an Oslob tour with children, we highly recommend it!

GoPro Rental vs. Professional GoPro Photography Services
We rented a GoPro separately in Korea before our trip,
and we didn't include the photography option in our tour package.
We thought that by bringing our own equipment, we could capture as many moments as we wanted.
However, once we were actually in the water, it was quite challenging to simultaneously watch the whale sharks, look after our child,
and photograph each other.

When we looked at the results, we realized we were missing enough photos and videos
of our family all together, which was a bit disappointing.
If capturing great photos and videos is important to you,
it might be better to choose a tour package that includes GoPro photography.
5. Is the OCAMOPACK suitable for kids?

Oslob tours range from itineraries that only include whale shark watching
to packages that combine it with Tumalog Falls, Moalboal, and Kawasan Canyoneering.
If you're traveling with young children or prefer to relax in the afternoon,
the Oslob + Moalboal Snorkeling itinerary might be a more manageable option.

We chose a package that combined Oslob, Canyoneering, and Moalboal –
what we called the OCAMO package.

Since we made the effort to travel all the way to southern Cebu, we wanted to experience everything.
It was a bit ambitious and physically challenging,
but looking back, I'm so glad we did it! Haha.

Canyoneering, especially, felt like something we might not be able to do when we're older,
so we pushed ourselves, and it was incredibly memorable for all the effort.
Our kids, in 4th grade, 6th grade, and 7th grade (first year of middle school), actually had energy left over
and even enjoyed swimming at the resort in the evening!
If you're wondering about physical limits... two men in their 40s and one woman in her 40s
and one woman in her late 30s successfully completed it, so keep that in mind!
Cebu Oslob Whale Shark Tour: Final Thoughts
✓ Mactan Airport pick-up availability
✓ Option for private or join-in vehicle
✓ Need for Fast Track access
✓ Advance preparation of snorkeling gear
✓ Inclusion of GoPro filming
✓ Comparing same-day vs. 2-day/1-night itineraries
The Oslob Whale Shark Tour
involves a 3-4 hour one-way journey from Mactan,
meaning the round trip alone takes at least 6 hours.
With the actual whale shark viewing lasting only about 30 minutes,
it's certainly not a quick or light trip.
However, considering the sheer size of the whale sharks swimming right before your eyes,
and how my child kept dreaming about them for a whole month,
leaving such a vivid memory,
the travel time was absolutely worth it for our family.
Even if you can't swim well, you can wear a life jacket and snorkel,
or simply view them from the boat.
So, I highly recommend giving it a try, even if you're not a strong swimmer!

Frequently Asked Questions
What are the advantages of heading straight to Oslob immediately after arriving at Mactan Airport on the first day of your Cebu trip?
If you arrive on an early morning flight, going directly from Mactan Airport to Oslob can save on accommodation costs and efficiently shorten your travel route. Furthermore, even if you were to depart from accommodation in Mactan, you would still need to wake up early, so going straight from the airport on the first day is not a bad option.
Can people who can't swim at all still experience the Oslob whale shark tour?
Yes, the Oslob whale shark tour is possible even if you can't swim. You can participate by wearing a life vest and snorkeling in the water, or by observing the whale sharks from the boat.
For the Oslob whale shark tour, is it better to choose on-site waiting or a Fast Track option?
If you can arrive early, it's fine to assess the situation on-site and wait without a Fast Track. However, if you have young children or your family finds waiting difficult, we recommend choosing the Fast Track in advance.
Is the OsCaMo Pack tour, which combines Oslob, Canyoneering, and Moalboal, too strenuous for elementary school children?
Children in 4th, 6th grade, and 1st year of middle school still had energy left after the OsCaMo Pack tour and even enjoyed swimming at the resort in the evening. Adults in their 40s have also successfully completed it, so it's definitely possible to participate, depending on the children's fitness levels.
For the Oslob whale shark tour, to capture enough family photos and videos, is it better to rent a GoPro yourself or choose a tour package that includes photography?
If you rent a GoPro yourself, it can be challenging to look after your children and film the whale sharks underwater at the same time, which might result in a lack of photos with the whole family. If photos and video footage are important to you, it's better to choose a tour package that includes GoPro photography.
