Hello, fellow travelers! Hennie here!
Today, I'm excited to share my experience at the original Nusr-Et steakhouse in Istanbul, Turkey – the very establishment run by the world-famous chef known for his iconic salt-sprinkling gesture, Salt Bae himself!
Booking a table is incredibly easy via Google Maps, and we opted for a delightful lunch visit.
The weather that day was absolutely gorgeous, which only made the restaurant look even more magnificent.
Nusr-Et's original branch is nestled in one of Istanbul's most affluent districts. Think of it as the Beverly Hills or Upper East Side of Turkey – a truly upscale location.
As soon as you step inside, you're greeted by an incredible display of meats. True to its reputation as a performance-driven steakhouse in a country known for its meat, the presentation was simply spectacular.
The grill setup was equally impressive. If you pull out your camera, the staff are more than happy to strike playful poses, which instantly brightened our mood!
We visited for lunch, and the restaurant was wonderfully bright with natural light. Since it was a weekday afternoon in October 2026, it wasn't overly crowded, and we didn't even need a reservation.
The menu is conveniently accessed via a QR code. We ordered three dishes: the Pocket Salad, Nusr-Et Special, and Baked Potato.
My husband and I were dining as a duo, and while we enjoyed our selections, I wished we had a larger group to try even more of their tempting offerings!
Of course, a meal like this wouldn't be complete without a refreshing beer, so we enjoyed a couple of Efes.
Then came the highly anticipated steak, drenched in rich ghee butter. The combination of ghee, perfectly cooked meat, and warm bread was truly indescribable – an unbeatable trio!
My husband raved about the incredibly flavorful butter, though he admitted it could become a bit rich over time. That's why the salad is absolutely essential to balance the flavors!
Our server expertly grilled the meat and bread in the ghee butter, then presented us with a perfect, ready-to-eat combination.
(Imagine the famous Nusr-Et steak performance here!)
Even something as simple as a baked potato becomes a captivating experience at Nusr-Et, thanks to their signature performance style.
They even sell Nusr-Et's "special" salt, though I couldn't discern anything particularly unique about it. However, since Salt Bae's iconic sprinkling gesture made it famous, it's become a popular souvenir for many visitors.
While I didn't get to see Salt Bae himself, I did catch a glimpse of his brother performing at a nearby table. (It seems these special performances are reserved for tables that order quite a bit!)
If you're visiting Istanbul, I highly recommend experiencing Nusr-Et at least once. The high-quality, ghee-basted steaks, a rare find in many places, combined with the spectacular tableside performances, make it an excellent choice for families and groups looking for a memorable meal!
How can I make a reservation at the original Nusr-Et branch in Istanbul?
You can easily make a reservation through Google Maps. However, during a weekday lunch in October, the restaurant was quiet enough that you could visit without a reservation.
What side dish do you recommend when eating the ghee butter steak at the original Nusr-Et branch?
The combination of ghee butter, meat, and bread is very flavorful, but it can get a bit greasy over time. Therefore, it is highly recommended to order a pocket salad to cut through the greasiness.
Can the famous salt-sprinkling performance be seen at every table at the original Nusr-Et branch?
The performance is usually provided only for tables that order a large amount of food. Even if Salt Bae himself is not present, his older brother sometimes comes to the table to perform it.
