Beppu Private Ryokan: A Japanese Hot Spring Getaway
Nogami Honkan: The Ultimate Budget-Friendly Stay

Hello, fellow travelers!
I'm travel influencer Nabongsun.
Last year, I spent more than a month exploring
Japan, checking out so many different
beautiful regions along the way.
This year, I planned a trip to Fukuoka, including
the famous hot spring town of Beppu!
With high expectations, I headed off on a Japanese onsen trip
with my soon-to-be middle schooler son
and my older brother's family.
Since we planned this trip to Oita—a region famous for its ryokans—quite last-minute,
it wasn't easy to find a decent, private Beppu ryokan.
But luckily, I stumbled upon a fantastic, budget-friendly Beppu ryokan
that offers private family baths!
I booked it right away and paid a visit.
Here is my review of Beppu Nogami Honkan,
where we had an amazing, value-for-money Japanese ryokan experience.
1. Location and Booking: Ryokan Nogami Honkan

As soon as we landed at Fukuoka Airport,
we headed straight to Hakata Station and hopped on
the Limited Express Sonic train we booked in advance.
It took about 2 hours to reach Beppu Station.
Nogami Honkan is just a short 5-minute walk from Beppu Station.
The famous Beppu Tower and the beach are also
easily reachable within a 5 to 10-minute walk.

The moment we stepped out of the station, there was a small hot spring pool nearby,
and you could immediately smell the city's signature sulfur scent in the air.
There's also a Seven-Eleven right in the alley of the accommodation,
which was super convenient.
With private family baths available to book and highly affordable rates,
this Beppu ryokan is absolutely perfect for family trips with kids.

During the regular season,
a weekday stay for 2 people including breakfast
is only around ~$64 per night.
Even their family room, which can accommodate up to 7 people,
is priced at around ~$192 including breakfast,
offering incredible value for money.

2. Room Condition

The five of us booked two Japanese Style B rooms
for about ~$192 in total, including breakfast.
At check-in, we paid an additional accommodation tax of
1,000 JPY per room.
We took the elevator up to our 3rd-floor rooms.
The moment we unlocked the door, we saw a sliding door,
and as we opened it, the lovely scent of fresh tatami mats greeted us.

My son and nephew were absolutely thrilled
to experience a traditional Japanese ryokan room for the first time.
There was plenty of space to open our suitcases
in the entryway area before stepping through the sliding door.
We split our group with 3 people in one room and 2 in the other.
Even though they are listed as 13m², the rooms felt surprisingly spacious
and comfortable, with slightly different layouts for each.
Each room was equipped with an AC/heating unit
and a mini-fridge.
There was a low seating table in front of the TV,
along with a standard table and chairs next to the window.

There was a small restroom with just a toilet,
and a sink right by the window.
However, please note that the room style I booked
didn't have a separate shower space,
so keep that in mind!
You can easily shower or bathe in the hot spring baths within the building.

As for amenities, you can grab as many as you need
like toothbrushes, toothpaste, combs, and razors
right next to the front desk on the 1st floor.

The hot spring is well-stocked with high-quality shampoo, conditioner, body wash,
lotion, hair dryers, and more, so I could use them
very comfortably without bringing my own.

You can also borrow an electric kettle from the 1st floor.
3. Enjoying the Onsen on our Beppu Trip

The public bath on the 1st floor
The main reason I chose this accommodation
was because you can reserve private family baths!
When traveling with a child, I thought having
a private hot spring experience was super important.
In the end, the water quality was so amazing
that we happily ended up using both
the private family bath and the public baths.

Public Bath Hours (Free to use for all guests)
Men
1F Hama no Yu 14:00 - 24:00
2F Tsuru no Yu 06:00 - 10:00
Women

1F Hama no Yu 06:00 - 10:00
They swap the floors for the men's and women's baths
like this throughout the day!

The family baths, which you can reserve for private use,
can be enjoyed together regardless of gender.
You can choose from three different baths: Ko jyu sen, Kiku sen, or Kunko sen.
I booked two slots for "Kunko sen,"
which is beautifully designed in a classic Japanese style.
It costs 500 yen (~$3) for a 50-minute slot,
but the popular timeslots fill up quickly,
so make sure to book yours early!

Yukatas were prepared in each room,
and there's a guide on how to wear them properly.

They are displayed by size and look absolutely adorable!
Children's yukatas and slippers are displayed at the entrance
of the 1st-floor hot spring. They're available on a first-come,
first-served basis, so I recommend grabbing them
when you check in.

We enjoyed the private family bath late on the night of our check-in.
The water was quite hot, but we could easily adjust
the temperature by running some cold water.

Since part of the ceiling is open-air,
we could breathe in the cool outside air while soaking in the hot spring.
It was incredibly quiet and healing.
While the private Beppu ryokan bath was fantastic,
going to the public bath alone early in the morning was also incredible.
Since no one was there, I had the whole space to myself,
enjoying a peaceful soak that felt just like a private bath.
The moment I stepped into the water,
my skin instantly felt incredibly smooth.
After soaking just twice, my face was literally glowing
by the time we checked out!

They also kindly provide guides to the major attractions nearby
It was also super convenient to do laundry while soaking.
There's a laundry room on the 1st floor,
and it cost 300 yen (~$2) per use.
4. Breakfast

When booking this budget-friendly stay in Oita, Japan's famous hot spring region,
right from the moment I reserved Nogami Honkan,
I made sure to include the hotel breakfast.
It already had great reviews for its traditional Japanese home-style breakfast,
and as expected, the neatly presented spread
was incredibly satisfying and hearty.

They kindly explained that we could get a free refill
of white rice once per person.
As soon as we sat down, they served us hot miso soup
and yogurt topped with dried fruit.

They also set up a simmering pot of fresh tofu for us,
and we got to grill the semi-dried horse mackerel ourselves.
My kid found the whole grilling experience super fun!
Getting to soak in the hot spring town atmosphere
while enjoying delicious food made for a truly wonderful
and memorable Japanese breakfast experience.

In the hallway, there was a dispenser where we could freely get
coffee, tea, and fresh water anytime.
It tasted great, so we didn't even need
to buy bottled water separately.
5. Wrapping Up Our Beppu Trip

That wraps up our story of a wonderful family trip to Beppu,
where our two families stayed together
at the lovely Nogami Honkan ryokan.
While Nogami Honkan might not be a luxury ryokan,
it has been recently renovated, making it very clean,
cozy, and comfortable.
Plus, being located right in the heart of Beppu,
it made getting around to nearby attractions super easy.

Most of all, it offers incredible value—
we got to experience the classic ryokan vibe
and even reserve the private family baths.
It was a great, budget-friendly way to create
happy, lasting memories of our Oita trip.
The silky, mineral-rich hot spring water was absolutely amazing,
and I'm already thinking about bringing my parents here
for a multi-night stay next time.
