Honestly, I thought, 'How special can a hotteok be?' My plan was to grab one if I happened to see a stand while exploring Namdaemun Market (남대문 시장). After getting off the bus and walking a bit, I found myself near the
G2 Namdaemun Market Gate

That's when I noticed a massive crowd nearby. This wasn't just any crowd; it was a long line of people waiting to buy hotteok from this very spot!

And this was on a weekday, not even a busy weekend! I debated whether to join such a long queue, but seeing the hotteok being cooked non-stop, I figured the line would move quickly. So, I jumped in... and ended up waiting about
30-40 minutes
for this amazing Vegetable Hotteok.

Good to know: the Vegetable Hotteok, Honey Seed Hotteok, and Red Bean Hotteok all cost ₩2,500 (~$2) each. We ordered two Japchae-filled Vegetable Hotteok to eat right away and two more for takeout, planning to share them with my dad and younger sibling.

They don't just hand you the perfectly grilled hotteok; they brush it with a savory soy sauce glaze! Even the takeout hotteok gets this special treatment. A hotteok filled with Japchae is already unique, but adding a soy sauce glaze? That's an extra layer of deliciousness I wasn't expecting!

When you order a hotteok to eat on the spot, they serve it in a paper cup, complete with a napkin, making it easy to enjoy on the go.

Not only is it generously packed with Japchae, but the Japchae itself is incredibly flavorful! The hotteok I bought for my dad and sibling? We 'legally' decided to eat them ourselves, figuring they wouldn't taste as good cold. Each of us had two hotteok, and we were so full we ended up canceling our dinner plans at Sodamchon (소담촌)! If you're visiting Namdaemun Market and have some time, I highly recommend trying this Vegetable Hotteok.

✔︎ My Honest Review of Namdaemun Market's Vegetable Hotteok:
Right after eating it, while it was delicious, if you'd asked me if I'd wait another 40 minutes, I might have hesitated. But as I continued exploring Namdaemun Market, I kept thinking about that taste! So much so that I ended up eating the hotteok I'd bought for my dad and sibling. Even now, writing this post, I'm craving it again. I'm pretty sure I'll be back for more on my next visit to Namdaemun.
