Dreaming of getting up close with Australia's iconic wildlife? Discover Moonlit Sanctuary, just an hour from Melbourne, and explore 4 amazing tour options to fit your style!

While traveling in Melbourne,
is there a place where you can truly interact with animals up close?
For those asking!
The place that confidently answers this question
is none other than Moonlit Sanctuary.

You can take photos with koalas,
and even hand-feed kangaroos and wallabies!
Since it's only about a 50-minute drive from Melbourne city center,
it's absolutely perfect for a day trip, don't you think?

The challenge is that Australia drives on the opposite side of the road compared to Korea,
so if you're a first-time visitor and need to drive,
it can definitely feel overwhelming.
That's why I opted for a day tour without a rental car,
and it turns out there are surprisingly many different tour packages available.
Since you're already venturing out of the city,
I realized after my trip that it's much more worthwhile to combine Moonlit Sanctuary with another nearby attraction
rather than just visiting the sanctuary alone.
Today, I've compiled four different options, including the itinerary I actually followed,
and other excellent tour packages I found,
to suit various preferences.
Package | Price | Recommended for |
~$223 | For a full, value-packed day
from ~$82 | If penguins are your main goal
from ~$74 | For a half-day, great value
from ~$23 | For self-guided travel with a rental car |
Based on prices as of August 10, 2026.
Prices may vary depending on exchange rates and promotions.
When I first arrived at Moonlit Sanctuary, what surprised me most was
how incredibly close you could get to the animals.

Koalas were clinging to trees, sleeping soundly,
and they were so relaxed that they didn't even mind when I took photos right next to them.

In the kangaroo and wallaby enclosure,
if you approach them with food in your hand,
they'll come right up to you to eat it.
What's surprising is how much gentler and more cautious they feel than you might expect,
so even if you're a bit timid, you'll definitely enjoy it!

You can also see other iconic Australian animals like wombats, dingoes, and emus all in one place,
making it a perfect spot for those who want to experience Australian wildlife in a condensed amount of time.

I even got to take a photo with a koala,
and it was such a healing and delightful experience.
It's about a 50-minute drive from Melbourne city center.
While you could drive yourself if you have a rental car,
Australia has left-hand traffic, which is the opposite side of the road from Korea,
so it might feel daunting if it's your first time driving there.
In such cases, opting for a day tour is much more relaxing.
They take care of everything from pickup to drop-off,
so you can focus entirely on enjoying the animals
without any driving stress!

Moonlit Sanctuary is located outside the city center, in the suburbs,
making it not easily accessible by public transport alone.
The tour packages introduced below
all include pickup from Melbourne city center,
so you can visit without any transportation worries.

If you want to experience the romance of a train ride too
This course packs Melbourne's suburban highlights into one action-packed day!

From riding the Puffing Billy steam train to Moonlit Sanctuary,
and Brighton Beach Boxes – a packed itinerary all in one day!
Kicking off with a ride on the Puffing Billy, a heritage steam train from the 1900s,
winding through the Dandenong Ranges,
this is truly the highlight of the tour.
The unique charm and atmosphere of the train itself are simply unforgettable.

Afterward, you'll get to interact with kangaroos, koalas, and wombats at Moonlit Sanctuary,
and finally, capture those perfect Instagrammable moments at the colorful Brighton Beach Boxes.
While it requires dedicating a full day,
it promises to be a day you won't regret!

If the Penguin Parade is your main goal,
This itinerary involves experiencing wildlife at Moonlit Sanctuary,
enjoying a coastal walk at Nobbies, and then concluding your day with the Phillip Island Penguin Parade.

Not only is round-trip transportation included,
but a free multi-language audio guide is also provided,
allowing you to listen to explanations and enjoy the journey without a dull moment.

This is a popular product, often difficult to book on the same day,
and reservations tend to fill up quickly, especially during the Penguin Parade season.
So, we highly recommend checking the dates and booking in advance.
The highlight is getting to see the penguins waddling back to their nests from the sea at sunset.
Once you've witnessed this scene in person,
you'll never forget their adorable antics!

Q. Can I visit Moonlit Sanctuary without a rental car?
A. Yes, all four tours introduced above
With Melbourne city pickup included,
you can comfortably enjoy your trip without needing a rental car.
Q. Can I actually touch a koala?
Some of our tour packages include
a koala encounter experience.
Rather than direct touching, it's usually an opportunity to take photos up close with them.
Q. What time can I expect to see the Penguin Parade?
It varies by season, but generally, it's around sunset.
In winter, it's a bit earlier,
and in summer, it's later, so be sure to confirm the exact time when you book.
Q. Is driving a rental car challenging for first-time visitors?
Australia drives on the left, with the steering wheel on the right, which is the opposite of many countries.
If it's your first time driving on the left, it will definitely take some time to get accustomed.
If you're not confident, we highly recommend joining a tour.
If you're planning a multi-day self-drive trip with a rental car,
we suggest you get comfortable driving outside the city center first
before heading out on your journey.
