Honestly, I walked in with no grand expectations, simply curious. What I found, however, was an unexpected explosion of opulent grandeur and incredible sights that completely captivated me. The cathedral's most significant historical treasure is undoubtedly the Byzantine-style Icon of Our Lady of Madia, revered above the main altar.

Legend has it that in 1117, during the cathedral's construction, work halted due to a lack of timber. Then, miraculously, a raft (known as 'Madia' in local dialect) carrying this sacred icon drifted into Monopoli's harbor, accompanied by a vision of the Virgin Mary.

The timber from this miraculous raft was then used to complete the cathedral's roof. To this day, the icon remains the most sacred patron saint, deeply revered by the people of Monopoli.
