The most significant historical treasure of this magnificent cathedral is undoubtedly the Byzantine-style icon of the Madonna della Madia, enshrined above the main altar.
Legend has it that in 1117, during the cathedral's construction, work stalled due to a severe shortage of timber. Miraculously, a raft (Madia) carrying this sacred icon drifted into the harbor, accompanied by a vision of the Virgin Mary.
The timber from this miraculous raft was then used to complete the cathedral's roof. To this day, the Madonna della Madia is revered as the patron saint and most sacred protector by the people of Monopoli.
