Melbourne 3-Day Itinerary 2026: A Local's Favorite Trip
Planning a trip to Melbourne in 2026? Discover a local's favorite 3-day itinerary, blending city exploration with iconic day trips like the Great Ocean Road and Phillip Island.

The city I've visited most often in Australia is...
Melbourne!
I've traveled to Australia three times,
and Melbourne was on my itinerary all three times.
It's a city I love dearly, and what's more,
there are so many incredible places to visit nearby.
From the Great Ocean Road,
to Puffing Billy, Phillip Island, and the Mornington Peninsula!

So, when you first start planning your Melbourne trip,
How many nights should I spend in Melbourne?
What can I see in 3 nights and 4 days?
you're bound to ponder these questions.
If I were to visit Melbourne again,
this is how I'd plan a 3-night, 4-day itinerary.
Melbourne 3-Night, 4-Day Itinerary at a Glance |
Day | Recommended Itinerary |
DAY 1 | Arrival in Melbourne + City Tour |
DAY 2 | Great Ocean Road |
DAY 3 | Puffing Billy + Phillip Island |
DAY 4 | Melbourne City + Travel to Next City |
Key: 1 Day in the City + 2 Days for Day Trips
Rather than spending all 3 nights and 4 days just in Melbourne city,
I highly recommend blending in some day trips to nearby areas.
DAY 1. Arrival in Melbourne + City Exploration |
Once you arrive at Melbourne Airport,
the first thing to do is head into the city!

When I traveled from Melbourne Airport to the city,
I used SkyBus.
It takes you directly from the airport to Southern Cross Station,
making it a convenient option for solo travelers or small groups.
After arriving in the city and dropping off your luggage at the hotel,
I recommend sticking to the city center and
exploring Melbourne's city attractions first!

The places I'd include are:
✅ Flinders Street Station
✅ Hosier Lane
✅ State Library Victoria
✅ Queen Victoria Market
✅ A Melbourne Cafe
That covers the main spots!
Rather than jumping into a day trip on your first day,
it's better to move at your own pace, adjusting to your post-flight condition.

Melbourne is especially fun to explore with its vibrant cafes and charming alleyways,
so I found it best to leisurely soak in the city's atmosphere on the first day.
DAY 2. The Great Ocean Road |

For the second day, I recommend dedicating the entire day
to the Great Ocean Road.
I've been to Melbourne three times,
and I've visited the Great Ocean Road three times too! Haha.

That's how much it stands out among Melbourne's day trips;
if I had to pick just one,
it would be the first place I'd personally recommend!
Along the coastal cliffs, you'll find breathtaking sights like the Twelve Apostles and Loch Ard Gorge.
The Great Ocean Road is a coastal drive stretching 243km,
and since it takes about 4 hours to drive from Melbourne to the Twelve Apostles,
the travel time is quite significant.
Great Ocean Road: Self-Drive vs. Tour?
This is where the dilemma comes in.
Driving yourself offers the advantage of freedom,
but for a day trip, the driving time can be quite long.
So, if you're not renting a car,
there's also the option of joining a day tour departing from Melbourne.

Even though the weather wasn't great last time,
I was fortunately still able to take a helicopter tour.
However, helicopter tours can be affected by weather,
so please check this aspect in the post below!
DAY 3. Puffing Billy + Phillip Island |
Day 3 was also an excursion around Melbourne!
Visiting Puffing Billy / Phillip Island,
and it turns out you can combine both places into one day to save time.

Puffing Billy is a steam train that runs through the forest,
and it's super famous near Melbourne!

Then, in the afternoon, heading to Phillip Island
to see the Penguin Parade in the evening sounds like a great itinerary!
Alternatively, you could ride the steam train at Puffing Billy,
and then visit the Mornington Hot Springs.
Phillip Island is about 2 hours from Melbourne, and
the Penguin Parade, where you can see penguins at night, is a signature attraction.
I actually
visited Puffing Billy and Phillip Island
together in one day.
Is it possible to visit Puffing Billy and Phillip Island in one day?
If you're asking,
Yes!
Especially if your Melbourne trip is short,
taking a combined tour of both places is a good option.
If you're planning a trip to Melbourne with kids,
I personally highly recommend this itinerary.
From steam trains to penguins,
you can have completely different experiences in one day~
DAY 4. Melbourne City + On to the Next City |
On the last day,
I explored Melbourne city, which I hadn't seen on the first day,
to match my flight or train departure time.

If you want to shop, go shopping,
and if you love cafes, a cafe hopping tour would be great too!
The itinerary after this would depend on your travel style, I suppose?

If you're only traveling to Melbourne, you'd head back home,
but if you're making your Australia trip a bit longer,
Melbourne → Sydney
or, like I did,
Melbourne → Gold Coast
you can also take a domestic flight.

I used Virgin Australia
to travel from Melbourne to Gold Coast.

When to visit Mornington Peninsula Hot Springs? |
Among the places I loved,
Mornington Peninsula was one of them.

I visited the wineries and Moonlit Sanctuary,
along with Peninsula Hot Springs, and
the hot springs were especially wonderful.

Mornington Peninsula is about an hour and a half from Melbourne, and it's
a popular nearby travel destination.
You can enjoy wineries, coastal scenery, hot springs, and more, all in one go.
However, if it's your first 3-night, 4-day trip to Melbourne,
I'd probably prioritize these two itineraries:
the Great Ocean Road
Puffing Billy + Phillip Island
If you have 5 days or more,
you can add an extra day for Mornington Peninsula!
Where's the best place to stay for a 3-night, 4-day Melbourne trip? |
If your itinerary is short, like a 3-night, 4-day trip,
the hotel's location is quite important.
With so many day tours available,
you'll often find yourself heading out bright and early!

On my last trip,
I stayed at voco Melbourne Central.

If you're planning to combine city sightseeing with day trips,
when choosing your hotel,
✅ Is it in the city center?
✅ Is it easy to get to the tour meeting points?
✅ Is airport access convenient?
it's a good idea to check these points.

Beyond that, you'll also want to explore the Yarra River,
Brighton Beach, Luna Park, St Kilda Beach, libraries, and so much more –
Melbourne truly is a city brimming with incredible sights.
For those wondering how to plan their Melbourne itinerary,
I hope this guide can be helpful!

Melbourne offers so much more than just its city center;
it truly comes alive when you include its surrounding day trips.
So, if you're planning an Australian adventure for your winter break,
I highly recommend checking the dates for your must-do day tours first.
