No matter where I travel, one of the first things I always check is the local public transport card. Melbourne was no exception! Trams are a major lifeline in Melbourne, connecting all corners of the city, making them incredibly popular with tourists.
Melbourne even boasts a fantastic Free Tram Zone, allowing you to explore key areas without needing a transport card. However, as you plan your itinerary, you might find yourself wanting to venture outside this zone to places like **Fitzroy** or the **Royal Botanic Gardens**.
🚨 It's crucial to note that unlike Sydney, Melbourne's public transport system doesn't accept direct payments with international credit cards or services like Travel Wallet/Travelog. 👉 That's where the Myki card comes in!
Based on my own experience buying and using a Myki card from an automatic vending machine, I'll walk you through everything you need to know: **how to purchase and use your Myki card, plus a clear breakdown of Melbourne's Free Tram Zone.**

💳 What is a Myki Card?
The Myki card is your essential public transport ticket for Melbourne and the wider Victoria state. Think of it as Australia's equivalent to London's Oyster card or New York's MetroCard. It's used for trams, trains, and buses across the network.
One of the great features of the Myki card is its **Daily Cap** system. Instead of paying per ride indefinitely, your fares are capped at a certain amount each day. Once you reach this limit, you won't be charged any more for public transport for the rest of the day!

How to Buy a Myki Card
I purchased my card and topped it up simultaneously at a tram stop vending machine. It's super convenient!
✅ You can pay with cash or credit/debit card.

Buy myki → Select Full Fare (Adult) → Choose Top-up Amount → Pay
1. Buy myki
On the first screen, click 'Buy ticket'!
2. Full Fare (Adult)
The next screen asks you to select your fare type. Choose 'Full Fare' for adults.
3. Select Amount
Now, choose your top-up amount! Since there's a daily cap, topping up ~$7 is often enough for a day's travel. You can always add more later, so I don't recommend topping up a huge amount initially.
✔️ The card itself costs ~$4. This fee is non-refundable.
This screen shows the cash payment option. Notice the minimum top-up is ~$5. So, the minimum initial cost for a new card + top-up is ~$9.
Be aware that the machine on the right indicates it might not give change for cash payments. My sibling put in two ~$7 bills and received ~$10 in credit after the card fee. For a smoother experience, I recommend paying by credit card using the 'Pay by credit card' option at the bottom right!
[How to Top Up Your Card]
To simply top up your existing card, select 'Top up myki money' from the first screen, choose your amount, and pay. It's that easy!
How to Use Your Myki Card
When riding a tram, simply tap your Myki card on the reader when you board. *However, no tapping is needed within the Free Tram Zone! (More on that below).*
✔️ For trains and buses, you'll need to tap on when you board AND tap off when you exit.
While you don't need to tap within the Free Tram Zone, if your journey takes you outside of it, you must tap your card on a reader inside the tram!
✔️ You can tap on as you exit the free tram zone, or you can tap on right when you board if you know you'll be traveling beyond the free zone.
When I went to the Fitzroy Flea Market, I tapped my card. Interestingly, when I visited in late May 2026, due to rising fuel costs, Melbourne's public transport was temporarily free! So, I bought a Myki card but didn't actually use any of the loaded credit. Haha!
⚠️ **Important:** This public transport free period was temporary and may no longer be in effect. Always check the latest information before your trip!

What is Melbourne's Free Tram Zone?
One of the best reasons to explore Melbourne is its amazing Free Tram Zone! Most of the city's major tourist attractions are located within this zone, allowing you to freely hop on and off trams to explore without worrying about fares. It's truly fantastic for visitors!
Tram stops within the Free Tram Zone are clearly marked with signage like the one pictured above, so you won't get confused about whether you're in the free zone or not. It's very user-friendly!

📌 If it's your first time in Melbourne, you might find that exploring the city center using only the Free Tram Zone is perfectly sufficient!
⚠️ However, if your plans include visiting places like Fitzroy, the Royal Botanic Gardens, or St. Kilda (famous for its stunning sunsets), you'll need to pay for your tram rides with a Myki card once you leave the free zone.
Melbourne truly becomes an easy city to navigate once you master its tram system! The fact that major attractions like Flinders Street Station and Queen Victoria Market are within the Free Tram Zone is a huge advantage, making it stress-free even for first-time visitors.

The Myki card is a transport card used for trams, trains, and buses throughout Victoria, including Melbourne. Unlike Sydney, you cannot use Travel Wallet or Travel Log cards to pay for public transport in Melbourne.
The Myki card operates on a daily fare cap system. You will not be charged more than AU$5.70 on weekdays, and no more than AU$4.00 on weekends and public holidays.
The Myki card issuance fee is AU$6, and this fee is non-refundable. The minimum top-up amount at a vending machine is AU$7, so a total of at least AU$13 is required, combining the card fee and top-up.
