Melbourne 4-Day Itinerary: Best of the CBD
How to Maximize the Free Tram Zone & Day Tour Reviews

When planning a DIY trip to Melbourne, you almost always hit a wall with these two things.
What to see in the CBD,
and how far out you should venture for day trips.
If you only have 4 days (3 nights), exploring just the CBD leaves you with awkward pockets of spare time,
but squeezing in three different day tours is simply too much.

📍 Don't worry too much about getting around—most CBD attractions are clustered right inside the Free Tram Zone.
The real head-scratcher is: "If I'm adding a day tour, which one should I choose?"
Today, I’ve mapped out everything from must-see CBD spots,
to a breakdown of the top 3 day tours (Great Ocean Road, Phillip Island, Puffing Billy),
so you can figure out which one fits your style
and how to seamlessly fit them into a 4-day itinerary.
01. First Things First: Master Melbourne's Free Tram Zone
The real secret to mastering Melbourne's CBD isn't the attractions—it's the tram network.
Trams within the CBD boundaries are completely free.
You don't even need to tap a Myki card; just hop on!
📍 Free Tram Zone Boundaries
North: La Trobe Street
South: Flinders Street
East: Spring Street
West: Includes Docklands
As long as you board and alight within these boundaries, it’s 100% free.
The moment you cross these borders, you'll be charged.
📍 Melbourne Transit Tip 📍
Enjoy a 50% discount on public transit
from June 2026 to January 2027!
As of July 2026, the Victorian Government is running
an inflation-relief initiative,
slashing fares for trams, trains, and buses by half.
-> This means even if you venture outside the Free Tram Zone, your wallet won't feel the pinch.
-> It’s especially great news if you're planning a DIY trip to Belgrave (the departure station for Puffing Billy), as the train fare there is half off too!
#MelbourneFreeTramZone

There's also a dedicated tourist tram
called the City Circle Tram (Route 35).
It operates on a set loop with slightly shorter hours (Sun–Wed: 10 AM – 6 PM / Thu–Sat: 10 AM – 9 PM).
Honestly, standard trams are often much quicker to get you where you want to go.
Think of Route 35 as a charming, leisurely ride to try when you have time to spare.

02. 5 Must-Visit Spots in Melbourne's CBD
#PhillipIsland #PuffingBilly #MelbourneDayTours #MelbourneTravel
Since the CBD is relatively compact,
you can easily cover the highlights in half a day.
Here are the absolute standouts that you shouldn't miss:
Flinders Street Station & Federation Square

This is Melbourne's ultimate landmark. The striking yellow facade of the station building is incredibly photogenic.
Federation Square is located right across the street, making them the perfect duo to explore together.
Since the Yarra River flows right alongside,
it naturally transitions into a gorgeous riverside stroll.
-> Travel Tip: Cross the bridge to Southbank to get the best angles of the station for your photos!
Hosier Lane

This is Melbourne's iconic, graffiti-filled alleyway.
The entire alley is a living canvas covered in vibrant street art,
and the murals change constantly as local artists repaint them.
Just a 3-minute walk from Flinders Street Station.
The lane is quite short, so you can easily walk through and snap some photos in about 5 minutes.
But trust me, those 5 minutes will yield some of the most aesthetic, Instagram-worthy shots of your trip.
🔗 A Local's Guide to Hosier Lane & NGV Photo Spots
State Library Victoria
(State Library Victoria)

This is that library that looks straight out of Harry Potter.
The domed reading room (La Trobe Reading Room) is absolutely breathtaking.
Admission is completely free, and it is incredibly quiet.
It didn't feel noisy or overcrowded like typical tourist spots, which made it even better.
📍 Hours: Mon–Thu 10:00 AM – 9:00 PM / Fri–Sun 10:00 AM – 6:00 PM
There's a Five Guys nearby, so I highly recommend grabbing lunch there as part of your itinerary!
Yarra River & Southbank

The south bank of the Yarra River is Southbank.
Just cross the bridge from Flinders Street Station and you're right there. It's beautiful during the day, but absolutely stunning in the evening.
-> If you head over around sunset, you'll get a spectacular view of the CBD skyline lighting up across the river.
-> You can also catch the Crown Casino water and fire show (on the hour at night) from here.

Queen Victoria Market
Queen Victoria Market

This is the largest open-air market in Melbourne.
You can find everything here, from fresh fruits, cheese, and pastries to souvenirs, clothing, and unique items.
📍 Queen Victoria Market Hours 📍
Tue, Thu, Fri: 6:00 AM – 3:00 PM
Sat: 6:00 AM – 4:00 PM
Sun: 9:00 AM – 4:00 PM
Closed Mondays & Wednesdays (be sure to check the day so you don't make a wasted trip!)
-> The Night Market is held only on Wednesday evenings during the summer season (November to March).
If your trip lines up with the summer season, the Night Market is an absolute must-visit.
03. Conquering Melbourne's Top 3 Coffee Spots in the CBD
#MelbourneTravel #MelbourneTrip #Melbourne4Days #MelbourneCBD
📍 Brother Baba Budan
359 Little Bourke St, Melbourne VIC 3000 Australia
📍 Dukes Coffee Roasters
247 Flinders Ln, Melbourne VIC 3000 Australia
📍 Patricia Coffee Brewers
Rear of, 493-495 Little Bourke St, Melbourne VIC 3000 Australia
In Melbourne, coffee is easily half the travel experience.
The legendary "Top 3" coffee spots are all clustered right in the CBD, so you can easily hit them all in half a day.
Brother Baba Budan - Little Bourke Street
This is the famous cafe with chairs hanging from the ceiling. It’s small and cozy, but the coffee is incredibly rich and smooth.

Dukes Coffee Roasters - Flinders Lane
Clean, classy, and relatively quiet. They are famous for their roasting, so you'll see lots of people buying whole beans to take home.
Patricia Coffee Brewers - Little Bourke Street
A standing-room-only spot with almost no seats. You grab your coffee, sip, and go, so the turnover is super fast.
All three are within a 10-minute walk of each other, making a back-to-back cafe tour incredibly easy.
In reality, though, doing all three in one go was a bit of a caffeine overload! Visiting one or two in the morning felt much more relaxing.

04. How many days should you spend in Melbourne's CBD?
This depends a lot on your travel style,
but here is a quick guide to help you decide.
Duration | Best Suited For |
1 Day in the CBD | Perfect for those focusing on day trips, or a short layover |
2 Days in the CBD | For those who want to take it slow with cafes, markets, and libraries |
2 Days in the CBD + 1 Day Trip | Most 4-day travelers (Recommended) |
2 Days in the CBD + 2 Day Trips | For those with a 5-day itinerary or longer |
For a 4-day itinerary, a combo of 2 days in the CBD + 1 day trip is definitely the least tiring way to go.
You *could* do 1 day in the CBD + 2 day trips,
but since day trips here are incredibly long
(Great Ocean Road takes 12 hours, and Phillip Island is around 12–14 hours),
doing them back-to-back will likely leave you completely wiped out the next day.
But hey, if you're a CrossFit enthusiast, maybe you can handle it...(?)
05. Stay in the CBD or Venture Out? Comparing the Top 3 Day Trips

For a 4-day trip, fitting in just one day trip is the sweet spot.
Here is a quick breakdown of the 3 most famous day trips from Melbourne.
Great Ocean Road

A scenic coastal road stretching about 240km west of Melbourne.
The absolute highlights are the Twelve Apostles and Loch Ard Gorge.
Duration: Approx. 12 hours round-trip (Day trip)
Highlights: Twelve Apostles, Loch Ard Gorge, Great Otway National Park
Key Features: Focuses on stunning coastal views and nature, helicopter tours available!
Recommended for: Nature lovers and anyone chasing that ultimate "photo of a lifetime"
Phillip Island

An island located southeast of Melbourne.
Its signature attraction is the Penguin Parade,
where adorable little penguins waddle back home from the sea at sunset.
Duration: Approx. 12–14 hours round-trip (Since the evening parade is the highlight, you'll return late at night)
Highlights: Penguin Parade, Wallaby & Kangaroo Safari, Koala Conservation Reserve
Key Features: Wildlife-focused experiences
Recommended for: Families with kids, animal lovers

Puffing Billy

A century-old steam train chugging through the Dandenong Ranges.
This is *the* iconic train where you can sit on the window sill with your legs dangling out for the perfect photo.
Duration: Half-day (5–6 hours round-trip if traveling independently)
Highlights: Belgrave to Lakeside round-trip (approx. 2 hours 20 mins) or to Gembrook (4 hours)
Key Features: Nostalgic, aesthetic photos and a relaxed itinerary
Recommended for: Traveling with parents or kids, or anyone wanting a laid-back day
📍Comparison Table of Melbourne's Top Day Tours📍
Category | Great Ocean Road | Phillip Island | Puffing Billy |

Where We Booked |
We booked all of our tours in advance,
and lately, it looks like there are plenty of options on Klook that include English-speaking guides
available quite often.
🔻🔻🔻
Booking in advance makes it so much easier to secure your preferred departure time.
Especially for the Great Ocean Road and Phillip Island,
tours often sell out days in advance during peak season (December to February).

06. How to Stay Connected: Data & Internet
Since data roaming in Australia can be quite expensive,
most travelers opt for either a physical SIM or an eSIM.
Here’s a quick breakdown of the pros and cons for each.
Method | Pros | Cons |
Roaming | No setup required | Highly expensive |
SIM Card | Affordable, reliable | Inconvenience of swapping physical cards |
eSIM | No physical swap needed, easy QR code setup | Only compatible with certain devices |
Since the iPhone XS and newer Android models almost all support eSIM, going with an eSIM is definitely the most convenient choice these days.
You don't have to waste time looking for a SIM shop at the airport. Just scan the QR code and set it up before you fly, and you'll connect to the network the second you land!
Since the eSIM QR code is delivered instantly to your email, you can easily grab it even the day before your trip.
-> When you're heading out to day-trip spots like the Great Ocean Road or Phillip Island,
having no connection can make things super tricky.
We highly recommend going with unlimited data for ultimate peace of mind!

Day 2 | CBD sights (Markets, library, cafes) |
Day 3 | Phillip Island Penguin Parade Tour (Depart morning ~ Return at midnight) |

Since the Phillip Island tour gets back late at night,
I highly recommend keeping the next day's schedule as relaxed as possible.
Wrapping Up
Recommended 3-Night, 4-Day Melbourne Itineraries

Melbourne's CBD is actually smaller than you might think.
You can easily cover most of it just by walking and using the Free Tram Zone,
the real decision comes down to choosing your day trips.
For a 4-day trip, it’s best for both your energy levels and peace of mind to choose just one major day trip.
If you love breathtaking natural landscapes, go for the Great Ocean Road.
If you're traveling with kids or want a more relaxed pace, Puffing Billy is perfect.
And if you want to see penguins and wild animals, Phillip Island is the way to go!
It all depends on your style,
so feel free to use these three options as a reference to build your perfect trip!

Frequently Asked Questions
What are the exact boundaries of the Free Tram Zone in the Melbourne CBD?
The Free Tram Zone is bounded by La Trobe Street to the north, Flinders Street to the south, Spring Street to the east, and Docklands to the west. If your journey starts and finishes within this zone, you don't need to touch on your myki card and can travel for free.
Which days is the Queen Victoria Market closed?
The Queen Victoria Market is closed every Monday and Wednesday, so be sure to plan accordingly to avoid a wasted trip. However, during the summer season from November to March, a special Night Market is held on Wednesday evenings.
Are there any transport fare discounts when traveling independently to Belgrave, the departure station for Puffing Billy?
Yes, from June 2026 to January 2027, public transport fares are discounted by 50% due to a Victoria State Government policy. Therefore, you can also enjoy half-price train fares to Belgrave, which is outside the Free Tram Zone.
How should I plan my itinerary for the day after a Phillip Island tour?
Since the highlight of the Phillip Island tour is the evening Penguin Parade, the round trip takes about 12 to 14 hours, and you will return late at night. Therefore, we recommend sleeping in the next morning and planning a very relaxed schedule, such as taking a stroll along the Yarra River.
Is it a good idea to visit all top three Melbourne cafes (Brother Baba Budan, Dukes, and Patricia) in one day?
While it is logistically possible since all three are within about a 10-minute walk of each other, visiting them all in a single day can be physically exhausting. It's better to visit just one or two in the morning and enjoy your coffee at a leisurely pace.
