How to Ride Macau's Free Shuttle Buses,
Main Island ↔ Cotai: I Rode Them Myself and Found No Ticket Needed!
Real-time Latest Review, September 2026

When exploring Macau, savvy travelers know that making good use of the free hotel shuttle buses can really help you save on transportation costs when moving between the main island and Cotai.
On this trip, I personally used the free shuttle from
Hotel Lisboa → Grand Lisboa Palace
and it was super convenient!
However, the free shuttle bus from
Cotai Wynn Palace → Macau Main Island
was a bit of a fail for me—I got lost trying to find the shuttle stop and ended up missing the last bus! Oh, the joys of travel mishaps!
When I actually rode them, I noticed some differences from older blog reviews, and it took me longer than expected to find the shuttle stops.
In particular, I read in an old blog post that you
"need to get a shuttle ticket from the casino on the B1 floor of Macau's Hotel Lisboa before boarding," which sent me on a wild goose chase around the hotel trying to get a ticket.
But here's the exciting update: when I actually used it in September 2026, I was able to board directly by just lining up in front of the hotel, no ticket needed!
For anyone planning to navigate Macau using the free shuttles between the main island and Cotai, I'll quickly summarize my route and what to watch out for, so you can travel like a pro!

I traveled back and forth between Macau's main island and Cotai twice,
and the taxi fare came out to 65 - 85 MOP.
Luckily, I called an Uber, so card payment was possible. But here's a heads-up: local taxis only accept cash, which can be a bit of a hassle!
For cash, they accept both Hong Kong Dollars and Chinese Yuan, but it's always a 1:1 exchange, so paying with Yuan means you lose out. Keep that in mind!

What is the SJM Shuttle?
You'll often spot SJM Resorts / 澳娛綜合 / SJM in Macau; it's the group that operates the Lisboa-affiliated hotels and casinos, a big name in the city!
To clarify the easily confusing hotel names when taking the shuttle bus, let's break them down:
Macau Main Island
- Hotel Lisboa / 葡京酒店 / Hotel Lisboa
- Grand Lisboa / 新葡京 / Grand Lisboa
Cotai
- Grand Lisboa Palace / 上葡京綜合度假村
/ Grand Lisboa Palace Resort
The names are so similar that I was really confused at first. It's like a fun little puzzle to solve on your adventure!
When traveling from Macau Main Island to Cotai, you can conveniently use the free SJM shuttle from Hotel Lisboa → Grand Lisboa Palace.
Instead of just asking, "Where's the bus to Cotai?", it's much better to specify the exact hotel name you're heading to. Trust me on this one!

I found older blog reviews mentioning that you "need to go inside the hotel casino to get a shuttle ticket first."
So, naturally, I went inside Hotel Lisboa and walked around looking for a ticket. My adventurous spirit was ready for a quest!
To cut to the chase,
when I used it myself in September 2026, no separate ticket was required.
I simply lined up at the shuttle bus stop right in front of Hotel Lisboa and hopped on board. It turns out I ended up wandering inside the hotel needlessly, searching for a ticket. Learn from my experience!
However, Macau shuttle operations can change at any time, so the most accurate way is always to double-check with a friendly staff member on-site.
The staff members were incredibly helpful with their guidance, making it a smooth journey.
Don't Just Say 'Going to Cotai', State Your Exact Destination
A Crucial Tip for Navigating Macau's Free Shuttles:
If you simply ask staff, "Where's the bus to Cotai?", you might not get precise directions, and we want you to reach your destination smoothly!
This is because Cotai is absolutely brimming with hotels and casinos, making a vague request a bit tricky.
So, when stating your destination, it's fastest and most efficient to say the exact hotel name. Happy travels!

If you're looking to catch the Lisboa shuttle,
上葡京 / Grand Lisboa Palace / Grand Lisboa Palace
If you're aiming for the Wynn shuttle bus,
永利皇宮 / Wynn Palace / Wynn Palace
that's exactly what you should say.
From my own experience getting around,
asking by the hotel name was far more precise than by the general area.
And honestly, if you're taking that specific shuttle,
it just makes perfect sense to say it that way, right? 😇

From Hotel Lisboa, I hopped on the free shuttle heading to Cotai's
'Grand Lisboa Palace'.
However, when you look at its location,
it's actually a bit further inland from the main Cotai Strip.
The places I was planning to visit —
- The Venetian / 威尼斯人 / The Venetian
- The Londoner / 倫敦人 / The Londoner
- The Parisian / 巴黎人 / The Parisian
were a little further away.
So, from Grand Lisboa Palace, I decided to grab a taxi again
and made my way to The Venetian. 😇
You can't seamlessly connect to *all* Cotai hotels using just the
free shuttles.
You can opt for a taxi like I did,
but honestly, many are close enough to walk.
Heading Back to Macau Peninsula
Missing the Shuttle Back
After soaking in all the sights around Cotai,
I made my way towards Wynn Palace.
Wynn Palace boasts stunning night views,
plus a free SkyCab experience,
making it a perfect spot to visit.
After my SkyCab ride (it’s like an aerial gondola!),
I planned to catch the Wynn Palace free shuttle
back to the Macau Peninsula.

But I missed the last shuttle at 10 PM!
The last free shuttle bus for Wynn Palace, which I intended to use,
departed at 10 PM.
Since the Cotai hotels are incredibly sprawling,
it takes quite a bit of time just to figure out, 'Where *is* the shuttle pick-up point?'
Even when asking staff,
the hotel's vast interior and numerous entrances make it tricky
to follow their directions.
In the end, we missed our last shuttle,
and had to take a taxi back to the Macau Peninsula.
If you're planning to use Macau hotel shuttles,
I'd highly recommend heading to the boarding area at least 10-20 minutes
before the scheduled last shuttle.
My Takeaways from Using Macau's Free Shuttles
Having experienced it firsthand, the free shuttle system itself was incredibly convenient.
Especially for routes like:
Hotel Lisboa ↔ Grand Lisboa Palace
Wynn Macau ↔ Wynn Palace
These routes, connecting hotels within the same group,
can really help you cut down on transportation costs if you use them wisely.
But if it's your first time giving them a try, there are a few key things to keep in mind:
- Unlike some older reviews, shuttle tickets weren't always required.
- Always state your destination by the hotel name, not just 'Cotai'.
- Resorts are huge, so allow ample time to locate the shuttle boarding areas.
- Hotels within Cotai are actually more spread out than you might anticipate.
- Macau taxis are typically cash-only (and yes, they accept Hong Kong dollars!).
- If you prefer to pay with a credit card, you can simply call an Uber via the app.

Initially, I found Macau's free shuttle system a bit overwhelming, but after using it just once, I realized it's much simpler than it seems! The key is to utilize the shuttles based on hotel groups and make sure you remember the exact name of your destination hotel. (And if you're unsure, don't hesitate to ask a staff member – they're always happy to help!).
Specifically, when I used it firsthand in September 2026, I was able to board the SJM free shuttle directly from Hotel Lisboa without any separate ticket! However, shuttle times and boarding locations can change for each hotel, so I always recommend double-checking with on-site staff on the day of your trip.
And I'll be putting together a separate post detailing my experiences with Macau taxis and Uber soon!
