Hello everyone!
This is Lalla Hyun's Travel Guide,
ensuring your first European trip goes smoothly.
Milan, Italy
Teatro alla Scala
The La Scala Theatre in Milan...
if you're not particularly interested in music, is it really worth visiting?
If you're planning your Milan itinerary, you've probably pondered this at least once.
Initially, I also thought just seeing the Duomo would be enough, but
after visiting myself, I immediately understood why it's called a world-class opera house.
So today, for those of you wondering whether to visit La Scala or not,
I'll share only the essential information you need,
from a museum review to how to book tickets for a performance.
A must-read for anyone heading to Milan for the Olympics too!

1. La Scala Theatre: Essential Information
Teatro alla Scala

📍 La Scala Theatre
V. Filodrammatici, 2, 20121 Milano MI, Italy
📍 Teatro alla Scala Museum
Largo Antonio Ghiringhelli, 1, 20121 Milano MI, Italy
The La Scala Theatre, also known simply as 'La Scala,'
is one of the world's most prestigious opera houses.
There are largely two ways to experience it:
1. Attending a performance
2. Visiting the La Scala Museum + Interior Theatre View

Even if your travel dates don't align with a performance,
a museum ticket alone grants you the unique experience
of seeing the actual theatre interior from a 3rd-floor box.
(Access might be restricted during rehearsals or special events.)

📌 Opening Hours
Museum Daily 09:30 - 17:30
(Closed on some public holidays / Closes at 15:00 on Dec 24 & 31)
📌 Admission Fees
• Standard €12
• Concessions €8
(For university students, youth, seniors over 65, etc.)
I got a discount with my International Student Identity Card (ISIC).
If you're traveling to multiple European countries,
I highly recommend getting an ISIC card!

Even during the Olympic season (February), a variety of performances are held.

there's quite a wide range.

And ✔️ in June,
Conductor Myung-Whun Chung's concert is scheduled!
From 2027, he's set to become La Scala's first
Asian Music Director,
so I think it will be an even more significant performance.
Tickets for performances can be booked on the official website.
(Free performances are walk-in only!)

3. Museum Visit Review

Even for someone like me, who wasn't very familiar with opera,
the museum was incredibly enjoyable.
As a foreign student, I was looking around using a translator,
and a staff member came over and even gave me explanations.
(Even if I didn't fully understand, I kept exclaiming "Oh~ Grazie!")
I came away with a much better impression than I expected.

Commedia dell'Arte
Commedia dell'Arte

What particularly captured my interest at the museum was
the Commedia dell'arte section.
It's a genre I briefly studied in school,
so I felt an instant connection.
(Where was my favorite Columbina, though…?)

Commedia dell'arte is a form of
masked comedy that originated in Italy. Sounds a bit like 'comedy,' doesn't it?
Each character has a designated profession and personality,
and it became a huge hit in Italy as an improvised play.
It's truly an actor's art.
(It mainly satirizes nobles, intellectuals, and soldiers.
Of course, there are love stories too!)
Opera Aida
AIDA

You can also see a
portrait of Teresa Stolz, who was a prima donna at La Scala.
She was a famous soprano,
known for starring in Verdi's opera <Aida>.
The musical 'Aida' is, in fact,
an adaptation of the opera Aida.
Giuseppe Verdi
Giuseppe Verdi, 1813-1901

And then there's the composer with a deep connection to La Scala,
Giuseppe Verdi
(Composer of the opera <Aida>)
He was the one who transformed opera from an art form for the aristocracy
into the language of the people.
Even if you're not deeply familiar with opera,
I bet you'll recognize these tunes.
💡Heads up! The sound is loud, so adjust your volume before listening!

▼ Libiamo ne' lieti calici (Brindisi from La Traviata) ▼
What do you think? Familiar, right? 🩵
It instantly makes you understand
why he was such an operatic titan of 19th-century Italy.
4. Tour Information

While La Scala doesn't offer Korean tours,
they do have tours available in English and French.

If English feels a bit daunting, tenor Kim Ki-sun's
Verdi audio guide is a fantastic alternative.
Listening to it right in front of La Scala
will make the experience even more memorable.

Teatro alla Scala isn't just for classical music aficionados.
Because its architecture, history, and cultural stories are so compelling,
I highly recommend a visit if you're planning your Milan itinerary.
It's also super easy to fit into your travel plans, being only about a
7-minute walk from the Duomo!
I'll be back soon with more helpful posts for your European adventures.
