To help clarify, I've put together a comprehensive guide covering everything from the often-confused distinctions between passport renewal and electronic passports to the necessary application documents, all based on the criteria for an adult general passport.
1. Passport Renewal vs. Electronic Passport: What's the Difference?
When people talk about passport renewal, it's not simply extending your current passport's expiration date. It's actually the process of getting a brand new passport – essentially a reissue. You can apply whether your current passport has already expired or still has some validity left!
An electronic passport (e-passport) is a physical passport embedded with an electronic chip. This chip securely stores your biometric data, enhancing security and facilitating faster immigration processes.
While older green-colored Korean passports might also be electronic, the cover color isn't the key indicator. Always look for the distinct electronic passport logo (a small rectangle with a circle inside) on the cover to confirm it's an e-passport!

Both options offer a 10-year validity, and with such a small price difference for more pages, I personally chose the 58-page version!
4. Step-by-Step Online Reissue Application via Government24
1. On Government24 (Korea's official online portal), search for 'Passport Reissue' or 'Passport Renewal'.
2. Verify your identity online and confirm your eligibility for application.
3. Upload your photo file and enter your application details.
4. Select the number of passport pages and your preferred pickup location.

Once your application is submitted, you cannot change it. Make sure to pick a location that's convenient for you to visit from home or work.
5. Pay the fee and check your application status.
