Experience the awe-inspiring Kona Manta Ray Night Snorkel on Hawaii's Big Island. See majestic manta rays glide beneath you – no swimming skills required!

If I had to pick the most surreal and wondrous moment of my Hawaii trip,
it would undoubtedly be the Hawaii Big Island
Night Manta Ray Snorkeling.

Imagine locking eyes with a massive manta ray
in the pitch-black ocean... have you ever?
It was such a mysterious and profound experience,
it made me think of the Tulkun from Avatar.
When you hear 'night snorkeling,' natural concerns pop up:
"What if I can't swim?"
"Isn't the ocean at night terrifying?"

I'm here to share my vivid experience of
Hawaii Big Island's Night Manta Ray Snorkeling,
along with all my booking tips and tricks!
Just last year, in 2025,
I embarked on a manta ray tour in Nusa Penida, Bali.
But unfortunately, we didn't spot any manta rays that day,
which was a disappointing wasted effort. Our guide even said
they're such rare creatures you need luck to see them.
However, on Hawaii's Big Island,
I got to see those magnificent manta rays to my heart's content!
It felt like more than just snorkeling;
it was like completing a major life bucket list item.

Before departure, there's a brief safety briefing,
and you're provided with a wetsuit top and snorkeling gear.

The boat ride typically takes about 20-30 minutes,
and manta ray viewing time is around 45 minutes.

Entry into the water usually starts from the back of the boat,
so if you want a prime spot at the light board,
sitting towards the stern is a helpful tip.

Upon arriving at the tour point,
we could already see the manta rays clearly from the boat!
You can comfortably enter the water using the ladder,
and guides will direct you to the illuminated floatation board.

Even if you can't swim or are afraid of the water,
anyone can enjoy this experience relatively safely.
I even heard reviews of pregnant women participating!

You simply hold onto the light board provided by the boat
and float on the water.
The wetsuit and foam noodle provide
ample buoyancy, so there was almost no physical strain.

This means that even if you're not a confident swimmer
or find the night ocean a bit intimidating,
you can enjoy it far more comfortably than you might expect.

If you're curious about how the tour actually operates, take a look here

It felt like half water, half manta ray!
They glided so close beneath me, sometimes even brushing past me
so near it felt like a gentle tap on the cheek – it was astonishing!

While you should never touch them first,
don't worry if they come close enough to gently bump you –
it's unavoidable and part of the magic!
Seeing this incredible spectacle firsthand,
I finally understood why this tour is considered a Big Island essential.

Among all of Hawaii's islands,
night manta ray snorkeling is an activity exclusively available
on the Big Island.
It feels like a CGI scene,
but you're actually witnessing wild manta rays
right before your eyes.
The neon lights shining into the night ocean
attract plankton, and in turn,
the giant manta rays naturally gather to feed on them.
It's truly a special experience
to see wild manta rays
in their natural habitat, right in front of you.
That's why I recommend the Hawaii Big Island Night Snorkel
as a must-do Hawaii activity.

While wetsuits are provided,
since it's the night ocean,
those who get cold easily should definitely
bring extra layers for warmth.
I was shivering so much in the water my jaw was chattering –
but then again, I'm practically Elsa when it comes to cold! Haha.

And since the boat ride is about 20-30 minutes,
I highly recommend taking motion sickness medication beforehand
if you're prone to seasickness.
There are also foam noodles and
light snacks available on the boat, so feel free to use them.
Warm showers are available, so
as soon as you get back on the boat, rinse off and
bring a personal towel or windbreaker to
maintain your body temperature. Don't forget those warm items!

Honestly, I was a little scared at first.
The dark night ocean, water whose depths I couldn't fathom,
and the fact that I'm generally intimidated by fish...
But the moment the manta rays appeared,
all fear vanished. That sheer mystique completely captivated me.
They were so enormous and otherworldly
that I think I was left a little speechless.

If I had to choose just one activity
for a Hawaii Big Island itinerary,
I would wholeheartedly recommend the night manta ray snorkeling
– that's how satisfying it was.

This mystical atmosphere will surely
become a lifelong memory.

Let's make it look like a classic like, you know, mid-century watch. That's what I love about it. The 39.5 is just, it wears really, really well. And it's so comfortable and the leather strap is beautiful. I'm wearing a grey suede. It came on. Oh, you've changed the strap? Yeah, I've got a grey suede that I got from B&R. Very nice! No, actually, I'm wearing it on standard. This is the strap it comes with! Look at that. Oh, no. Right. I've got a grey suede from B&R for my Oris, I: Oh, OK! 00:30:00:00 00:30:17:00 see. A: ...which has, which has 20 mil. This is 21 mil. So yeah, this is the, this is the standard strap. It is very nice. It’s got a like a suede-y feel to it. And I wear it almost every day. It's just. It's so clean. It's so simple. It's so legible. I love the sector dial. It's just great. It's, yeah, it's my, probably my favorite watch right now. J: Oh, very nice. Very nice. A: Yeah, so what are you wearing? J: I am wearing. Well, I: usually wear my Garmin, actually, because I like to track my steps and stuff like that. But today for the show, I am wearing this, which is an Omega Speedmaster 3510.50. So it's the reduced, but with the Hesalite crystal and the automatic movement. And I bought it from Japan earlier this year. It came with the full box and papers and everything, which is quite rare for these. A: Nice, very nice. J: And yeah, it's just a classic, you know, Speedy. I like the size of the reduced because I have quite small wrists. So the 39 mil fits me. I think the professional is 42, which is just a bit too big, I think. A: Yeah, no, I think that looks great. It's a classic. You can't go wrong. J: Thanks. Yeah, I love it. It's, yeah, it's a great watch. A: Cool, well, thanks for coming on. J: Thanks for having me. A: And we'll see you in the next episode. J: See ya. 00:30:17:00 00:30:48:00 [Music] _This transcript was generated with the help of AI.__ _In our **Meet the Maker** series, we shine a light on the people behind some of our favorite local brands.
