Planning a trip to Hawaii's Big Island in 2026? Discover how to easily book a Hertz Jeep Wrangler at Kona Airport via Klook for your ultimate adventure, including Mauna Kea!

The freedom of a Hawaii Big Island adventure
and the dream of conquering Mauna Kea's summit
were made real by our trusty Jeep Wrangler!
I saved both time and money by booking our rental car in advance through Klook,
which included excellent conditions and comprehensive insurance.
I highly recommend checking out the booking method I personally used and endorse via the link below.
Make sure to secure your reservation before they sell out!
Super Easy Way to Book Your Hawaii Rental Car with Klook!
I'm a frequent user of Klook, as they offer a wide array of travel products including accommodations, tickets, tours, and transportation.
Booking a rental car is incredibly simple, and it's my favorite platform because it's easy to compare various rental car companies and options, including insurance!
A major advantage is their user-friendly interface and the ease of finding packages that include essential insurance, which is crucial when renting a car abroad.

First, access the Klook app or website, then select "Car Rentals" from the main screen.
Set your pickup location to Kona Airport and enter your desired dates and times.

Next, you'll choose your vehicle. If you plan to drive to the summit of Mauna Kea, a 4-wheel drive vehicle is absolutely essential. Don't even bother looking at other options; just go for the Jeep Wrangler.
We initially rented a Cadillac and ended up having to exchange it and go back the next day! Learn from our mistake!
Even if you book a Jeep Wrangler, there's always a chance they might try to give you a different vehicle. So, if you're heading to Mauna Kea, insist on getting a Jeep Wrangler!

Be sure to confirm the 4WD (4-wheel drive) option. After selecting your vehicle, you'll choose your rental car company.
Just like anywhere else, there are many companies to choose from, but I personally prefer Hertz Car Rental.

You'll want to carefully review the insurance included in the vehicle fee, such as LDW/CDW. If you select Klook Protect, most insurance needs are covered.
The most crucial aspect of renting a car abroad is insurance. A moment of carelessness can lead to astronomical costs. We even got a speeding ticket and had to pay a fine!
The road conditions on the Big Island are unique, so extra caution is definitely warranted.
📝 3 Essential Car Rental Insurance Types Abroad
Insurance Type | Acronym | Coverage (Key) | Importance |
Loss Damage Waiver / Collision Damage Waiver | LDW/CDW | Waives the driver's responsibility for damage or theft of the rental vehicle. | ⭐Essential! |
Liability Insurance Supplement / Third Party Liability | LIS/TPL | Covers damages to other vehicles or individuals in an accident. | ⭐Essential! |
Personal Accident Insurance | PAI | Provides compensation for injury or death of the driver and passengers. | Check for overlap with travel insurance |
With Klook Protect, your deductible is waived, so if you want to travel worry-free, I highly recommend a full coverage package.
Also, make sure to thoroughly check fuel policies and mileage regulations!

You'll need a few documents for pickup: your passport, driver's license, and an International Driving Permit (IDP).
You'll also need a credit card for the security deposit. Debit cards are not accepted!
We were charged a ~$200 deposit, which was promptly canceled after returning the vehicle.
Once your payment is complete, a voucher will be sent to your email. It's a good idea to print it out or save it on your mobile device, as you'll need it for pickup.

I recommend Klook for its prepaid booking option over post-paid. This minimizes unexpected additional costs at the counter and allows you to pay in advance without worrying about currency fluctuations, making it incredibly convenient.

Kona Airport Hertz Car Rental Pickup & Return Guide

While the Hertz Car Rental branch at Kona Airport on the Big Island is near the airport, you'll need to take a shuttle bus to get there.

After arriving at Kona Airport and collecting your luggage, follow the signs to the rental car shuttle pickup area. You'll then board a shuttle bus with the Hertz logo, which will take you to their office.

Upon arrival at the office, present your prepared documents. Carefully check the receipt to ensure there are no post-paid charges after your prepaid amount and that all insurance options are correctly applied.
4 Essential Documents for Pickup ① Booking Voucher: Your booking confirmation from Klook (printout or mobile) ② Domestic Driver's License: Original valid driver's license with sufficient validity ③ International Driving Permit (IDP): Valid within one year from its issue date ④ Credit Card in Your Name: For the security deposit. Must match the driver's name. |

Afterward, proceed to the parking area indicated by the staff to find your reserved Jeep Wrangler. It's highly recommended to thoroughly inspect the exterior for any damage, check the dashboard, and take photos before driving off.

Unlike Oahu, Hawaii's Big Island doesn't have a trolley system, making a rental car an absolute necessity. To truly explore this vast island, having your own vehicle is crucial, and comprehensive insurance for peace of mind while driving is equally important!

I strongly recommend booking through Klook in advance to avoid complicated paperwork, potential language barriers, and unnecessary extra costs on arrival. It's a seamless experience!
This is a method I've personally experienced and highly recommend, so please take note. Booking your Hawaii rental car is the most important first step in planning your Hawaiian adventure!
Don't hesitate; click now to properly prepare for your trip and make the most of your Big Island experience.
