Kobe Airport currently operates with two terminals. If you arrive on Korean Air, you'll likely land in Terminal 2. To reach the city center, you'll need to make your way to Terminal 1.
The most convenient way to get to Sannomiya is by taking the Portliner, an automated transit system connected to the second floor of Terminal 1. It's just about a 5-minute walk to Terminal 1, so you'll be there in no time.
How to Ride Kobe's Portliner & Use Contactless Cards
Once you head up to the Portliner platform, you'll find the ticket gates. The fare is typically ~$2 for adults and ~$1 for children (up to 13 years old).
One of the best conveniences is the contactless payment option. If your Visa or Mastercard has the Wi-Fi-like contactless icon, you can simply tap your card at the gate, just like you would on many subway systems back home, and walk right through! No need to buy a separate ticket.
📍 However, there are a few important things to keep in mind when using this method.
The Portliner's final stop is Sannomiya Station, so you don't have to worry about missing your exit. The ride is comfortable and takes about 20 minutes. Even on a rainy day, the station is well-connected to the city center via indoor walkways, making your arrival super convenient.
Traveling from Kobe to Osaka
For this trip, I chose the Candeo Hotel, conveniently located right next to Motomachi Station, which also boasted an amazing public onsen bath – highly recommended! After a relaxing stay enjoying Kobe's city life and unwinding in the onsen, it was time to move on to Osaka.
The contactless card proved incredibly useful for the journey to Osaka as well.
Simply tapping my Visa contactless card (or a travel contactless card) at the ticket gate made getting on the train to Osaka super easy and hassle-free.
However, if you're traveling with children, there's a crucial point to remember. Contactless card payments do not apply child discounts. If your children tap their contactless cards, they will be charged the full adult fare. To save on transportation costs, make sure to purchase child tickets at a ticket vending machine inside the station.
Tips for Traveling Between Osaka, Kyoto, and Nara
When planning to travel from Kobe's Sannomiya or Motomachi areas to other Kansai region cities like Osaka, Kyoto, or Nara, choosing the right transportation is key.
