This time, with my friends,
I went on a 3-day, 2-night free-and-easy trip to Kitakyushu.
On the first day, we visited Kokura Castle,
on the second day, we explored Mojiko,
and on the last day, after breakfast, we headed straight back home.
That was our schedule!
We only planned about one sightseeing spot per day,
so the itinerary itself was incredibly relaxed.
To cut to the chase, including flights, accommodation, food, and transportation,
it cost roughly ~$276 per person, excluding shopping.
So, let's break down the 3-day, 2-night Kitakyushu itinerary,
and the actual travel expenses we incurred.

Kitakyushu itself doesn't have a huge number of tourist attractions,
and most of them are concentrated in the central Kokura area,
so there was no need for a super packed schedule.
The hotel where I stayed for the 3-day, 2-night trip was
the Rakuten STAY Kokura Hotel.
It had spacious rooms where all four of us could open our suitcases comfortably,
and it was only a 10-minute walk to Kokura Station, among other great things.
I loved its location,
and it only cost ~$276 for 2 nights for 4 people!
It was such a great value hotel.

Day 1
On our first day in Kitakyushu,
we dropped off our luggage at the hotel and went to Kokura Castle.
It's one of those iconic spots you wouldn't want to miss
when traveling in Kokura!
What's more, in Kokura, major tourist attractions,
shopping areas, and great restaurants are all relatively close,
making it super convenient for exploring on foot.
For lunch, we went with the always reliable
Ichiran Ramen!
Compared to Fukuoka or Osaka,
there weren't many tourists,
so we were able to eat right away without waiting.
The MaxValu supermarket next to Kokura Castle was noticeably cheaper than other places,
so it was great to plan the route as Kokura Castle > Supermarket Shopping.
After shopping, taking a taxi back to the accommodation took about 10 minutes!

Dinner was Yakiniku!
Day 2
On the second day, I visited Mojiko.
Personally, if you're traveling to Kitakyushu,
I highly recommend including Mojiko in your itinerary.
It's only about a 30-minute subway ride
from Kokura, and
the atmosphere is completely different from downtown Kokura,
making it a great place to visit for a day.
Watching the sea view, taking photos, and enjoying the sunset,
half a day just flew by.
Day 3
I flew with Jin Air,
and when I went, the flight schedule was early in the morning,
so I didn't plan any separate sightseeing; it was just breakfast
and then heading straight to the airport.
It takes about 1 hour to reach the airport,
and traffic can be heavy during rush hour, so keep that in mind!
Actual Expenses for a 2-Night, 3-Day Trip to Kitakyushu
The most anticipated part: Kitakyushu travel expenses!
This trip was with 4 people,
and I've summarized the actual amounts spent, excluding shopping.

That's ~$273 per person!
You can see it cost around ~$276 per person.
We booked our flights for around ~$104 per person,
and by sharing accommodation with 4 of us,
we were even able to bring down the 2-night stay
to about ~$72 per person.
For food, the 4 of us spent a total of about ~$331.
Even though we indulged in all the dishes we craved without holding back,
it only came out to around ~$83 per person, which was much less burdensome than we expected.
And for local transportation in Kitakyushu,
all 4 of us combined spent just about ~$36!
Perhaps because we didn't rush around to too many tourist spots,
the low transportation costs also
helped us keep our overall travel expenses down.

Is 2 Nights & 3 Days Enough for Kitakyushu?!

In fact, by not packing too many tourist attractions into our itinerary,
we didn't feel overly tired throughout the trip.
We got to eat delicious food, do some shopping,
and truly enjoy our trip at a leisurely pace.
Especially when traveling with 4 people, splitting the accommodation costs
really helped keep our overall travel expenses lower than expected.
So, including flights + 2 nights accommodation + food + transportation,
it all came out to just ~$276 per person!
If you're looking for a slightly more tranquil and
relaxed small city trip in Japan than Fukuoka,
or if you're searching for a Japanese free-and-easy destination for a short
2-night, 3-day getaway,
I definitely recommend Kitakyushu.
