Discover the perfect 4-day Kaohsiung itinerary! From relaxing Love River cruises and Cijin Island sunsets to a historic Tainan day trip.

Taiwan
After exploring Kaohsiung firsthand, I fell in love with its beautifully slow and relaxing vibe.

Watching the sunset glow behind the 85 Sky Tower, embracing the laid-back atmosphere of Cijin Island,
and seeing the light rail glide through the city is pure relaxation!
From the Pier-2 Art Center to Cijin Island and the Love River,
here is my complete 4-day, 3-night Kaohsiung itinerary and day trip guide.
If you plan to include a day tour outside the city,
a 3-day trip might feel too rushed, so I highly recommend 4 days!

Kaohsiung City Itinerary Overview
Day 1 : Love River, Liuhe Night Market
Day 2 : Cijin Island, Pier-2 Art Center, Carrefour Shopping
Day 3 : Day Tour from Kaohsiung (Tainan)
Day 4 : Traditional Breakfast at Lao Jiang (Formosa Boulevard Station)

I chose to stay near Kaohsiung Main Station because it's
close to the airport and incredibly convenient for getting around.
Location is everything when you're traveling!

I booked the Kindness Hotel because they offered great rates for a triple room.
The staff was super friendly, and the complimentary breakfast was surprisingly hearty!
The accessibility is unbeatable—it's just a 20-minute MRT ride from the airport,
and only a 15-minute walk to the famous Liuhe Night Market.

I booked a room for 3 people on Trip.com for ~$108!

By the time you leave the airport and check into your hotel, the afternoon is mostly gone,
so my son and I headed straight out for a Love River cruise.
It's a great way to cool down on a hot day,
and if you go at sunset, the romantic atmosphere of the river is unmatched.

Cruise tickets are very affordable, and if you book in advance,
you just scan a QR code at the ticket booth. It's a must-do!

This is where I got my tickets!

The cruise takes about 25 minutes to loop around the river with some commentary.
Even if you don't understand the language, you can follow along using Google Maps.
This stunning building is the Kaohsiung Music Center—the architecture is incredible.
After the river cruise, you'll probably be hungry for dinner,
so wrapping up the day at the nearby Liuhe Night Market is the perfect plan!

For day two, we started by visiting Cijin Island,
which ended up being my absolute favorite spot in the whole city.

You take a quick ferry to get there, which doesn't take long at all,
and it's a great way to take in the city's unique maritime vibe.

Once on Cijin Island, renting a bike to explore is highly recommended.
It's the perfect place to spend a slow-paced half-day.

If you hike up to the Cihou Lighthouse, you'll be rewarded with
this breathtaking panoramic view. It's a bit of a workout in the heat, but totally worth it.
I was so glad we made the trek up there!

Cijin Island is famous for its fresh seafood, so be sure to grab a bite,
and don't leave without trying the massive shaved ice at Haizhibing.
Prices in Kaohsiung are still very reasonable,
and the food tastes even better after a leisurely day of island exploring. :)

After wrapping up at Cijin Island, we headed to the Hamasen Railway Cultural Park.
It's a fantastic open space to wander around and snap some memorable photos.

The light rail connects Hamasen Station directly to the Pier-2 Art Center,
making it a perfect afternoon itinerary.
The area is packed with quirky boutiques, cool cafes, and the famous Wooderful Life music box store.
There's so much to see, the time just flies by.

Spending the rest of the afternoon at the Pier-2 Art Center
made the day feel incredibly fulfilling.
Afterward, we headed to Carrefour for some souvenir shopping,
grabbed dinner, and called it a day. :)
By the way, there's a hot pot restaurant inside Carrefour that was surprisingly delicious!

Since our flight was in the afternoon and I was craving a traditional Taiwanese breakfast,
we stopped by Lao Jiang near Formosa Boulevard Station before leaving.
If you're short on time on your departure day,
you could easily fit this in on your way to Cijin Island instead.

It's a humble shop with over 70 years of history, serving up classic Taiwanese breakfast.
Their Danbing (egg pancake) is fantastic, and the milk tea is absolute perfection!
Where to Go for a Day Trip?

The most popular day trip from Kaohsiung is Tainan,
Taiwan's oldest city, often considered the historical and cultural heart of the island.

You can comfortably explore sites like Anping Fort, Anping Tree House, and the Sicao Green Tunnel
by joining a guided day tour.
Normally, you'd have to navigate the trains yourself, so if this is your first time exploring the area,
a guided tour is much more efficient.
I highly recommend it if you want to see as much as possible in one day without the stress of logistics.

What to Prepare Before You Go

Traveling in Taiwan is infinitely easier with an EasyCard.
You can use it for the MRT, light rail, buses, and even convenience stores.

It works just like a standard transit card but is accepted in surprisingly many places.
Some smaller shops might not take foreign credit cards,
but they will often accept EasyCard, so it's a must-have.
You can buy one locally, or do what I did and
pre-purchase a loaded card to pick up right at the airport.

You can choose between a 200 TWD or 400 TWD pre-loaded balance!

Even though it's a bustling city, Kaohsiung has an unhurried, comfortable rhythm
that leaves a lasting impression long after the trip ends.
A 4-day, 3-night itinerary gives you the perfect balance of exploring the city
and taking a day trip to the historic suburbs.
And personally, I can't recommend the Love River cruise enough. :)
