Kansai Airport to Kobe: Bay Shuttle Ferry Guide 2026

Planning a trip to Japan and looking to venture beyond the bustling streets of Osaka? Perhaps you've already explored Kyoto and are seeking a fresh, charming city to discover nearby.

That's exactly what happened to me! While researching, I stumbled upon a fantastic tip: you can reach Kobe from Kansai International Airport (KIX) in just about 30 minutes by taking a convenient ferry.

My decision was made: Kobe it was for this adventure!

Upon arriving at Osaka's Kansai Airport Terminal 1, after clearing immigration, simply follow the signs featuring a boat icon. They'll guide you to the Bay Shuttle ferry counter.

Once you exit the arrival gate, head all the way to the right. You'll find the ferry counter there.

Good news for international visitors! The fare for foreigners is discounted, costing only ~$4 per person.

Remember to have your passport handy, as it's required for the foreigner discount. Card payments are accepted, making it super convenient.

Once you've purchased your ticket, you'll need to take a shuttle bus to the ferry pier. Head out to bus stop 12.

The ferry itself is quite compact but surprisingly comfortable. It's a pleasant journey across the sea to Kobe – in some ways, it feels even closer than downtown Osaka!

Despite its size, the interior is clean and cozy. During my trip, most of the passengers seemed to be locals, which is always a good sign for an authentic experience.

One thing to note: because the ferry is smaller, it might be a bit bumpy on choppier days, so if you're prone to seasickness, you might want to prepare accordingly.

After a quick 30-minute ferry ride, you'll arrive in Kobe! From there, another complimentary shuttle bus will take you to Kobe Airport.

To reach Kobe city center from Kobe Airport, you'll need to hop on the Port Liner.

The Port Liner station is conveniently located on the second floor of Kobe Airport. Just follow the clear signage.

The Port Liner will whisk you to Kobe city center in under 20 minutes. If your hotel, like the Hotel Montre I booked, is near Sannomiya Station, you can expect to arrive in about 18 minutes.
