With news that fuel surcharges would increase starting in April,

I hastily booked my flight on March 31st,

and recently canceled my flight from Incheon to Brisbane.

Thanks to checking Korea's refund policy, which applies

when there are 91 days or more until the departure date,

I was able to complete the full refund process without any fees or penalties.

Today, I'll walk you through everything from why I canceled my Incheon-Brisbane flight,

to Jetstar's Korean refund policy, the phone cancellation process,

and how to compare new flight tickets.

1. Reason for Canceling My Incheon-Brisbane Flight

When I first planned my Australian road trip,

I initially envisioned an itinerary starting in Brisbane, going through Gold Coast and Sydney,

and finally reaching Melbourne along the southeastern coastal road.

However, once I started mapping out the detailed route,

I realized that even with a travel period of 3 to 4 weeks,

the distances were quite significant for traveling with a child.

Most importantly, the activities I wanted to do with my child

were concentrated in Melbourne and Sydney.

Rather than spending a lot of time on long journeys,

I decided to remove the Brisbane and Gold Coast legs of the trip

and focus on leisurely exploring Melbourne and Sydney.

This change seemed like a much better plan.

Actually, at the end of March, with the news of fuel surcharges increasing from April,

I was in a rush, worried that flight prices would go up even further.

However, considering the possibility of my Australia trip itinerary changing,

it was fortunate that I had booked through the official Jetstar website,

which allows 100% refunds up to 91 days before the departure date.

If it hadn't been for the free cancellation policy,

the cancellation and change fees would have made it difficult

to decide to alter the itinerary.

2. Jetstar Korea's Refund Policy: Understanding the 91-Day Rule

If you booked a flight departing from or arriving in Korea

through the Jetstar Korea website or call center,

the refund percentage varies depending on the time remaining until departure,

and the refund will be processed to the original payment method.

If it's a ticket where the departure date has been changed once,

be aware that the refund percentage is calculated based on the original departure date,

not the changed date.

Additional items here include checked baggage, seats,

in-flight meals, entertainment, and comfort packs.

Since we submitted the cancellation when there were more than 91 days remaining until departure,

we were informed that we were eligible for a full refund, including airfare and additional items.

What's important here is not to rely solely on a rough calculation like 'around 3 months before departure'.

If you're close to the 91-day threshold,

it's safer to accurately calculate the days and even hours

between the original departure date shown in your booking details

and the actual refund request date.

3. How to Cancel a Jetstar Flight by Phone

​

On Jetstar Korea's refund information page,

you'll find contact information for their customer service,

which offers Korean language support.

Although there's also a live chat option at the bottom of the official refund page,

when I tried to access the refund request menu,

a message popped up telling me to call.

So, I called the domestic number during Korean language support hours.

Before calling, make sure to have the following information ready:

✔ Jetstar booking reference

✔ Booker's name

✔ Departure and arrival cities

✔ Flight departure date and time

I had my booking confirmation email open on my phone screen, and I processed the cancellation request by answering the agent's questions as they came.

4. The Actual Refund Process and Time Taken

After calling the Korean customer service center,

I waited about 3 minutes to connect with an agent.

Once connected, I told them I wanted to cancel my flight ticket,

and they proceeded to verify my booking number, the name of the booker, the origin and destination of the route,

and the departure date and time, one after another.

After confirming my identity and booking details,

I was informed that once the flight cancellation is processed, it cannot be reversed, and that the refund process could take 1 to 3 weeks.

I was also told that the refund would be returned to the original payment method used during booking.

Since I paid by card,

it will be processed as a card authorization cancellation.

Although there was a short wait to connect on the phone,

once I was connected with an agent, the cancellation was processed quickly without any complicated explanations or additional document submissions.

Currently, the flight cancellation has been successfully submitted,

but the actual card payment cancellation amount has not yet been reflected.

5. Re-booking: Comparing Skyscanner and Trip.com

When I first booked my Jetstar ticket,

I was eager to book before fuel surcharges increased, and there was also a possibility that my travel dates might change.

So, at that time, rather than just finding the cheapest flight,

I prioritized a booking method that would result in fewer losses if my itinerary changed.

Now, with only about 3 months left until my planned travel date

and having excluded Brisbane and Gold Coast from my itinerary,

my overall travel route has become more defined.

For my new flight, I'm going to prioritize the final payment amount, departure/arrival times, and convenient routes

over whether free cancellation is available,

So, let me share my method for booking cheap flights!

Checking Monthly Prices on Skyscanner

My plan is to depart in the third week of October or

the third week of November, stay in Sydney and Melbourne for about 3 weeks, and then return home.

I have an unmissable event on November 14th,

and this schedule is set to avoid the Australian school holiday period.

If you're like me and don't have a fixed date but want to find cheap dates around a certain period, search on Skyscanner by setting your departure date to Flexible dates.

If your dates are flexible, it's easy to check prices month by month on Skyscanner,

and once you find cheap dates, gradually narrow down your search by direct flights vs. layovers, and departure/arrival times.

Skyscanner offers features like searching for the cheapest month, layover filters, and price change alerts, making it convenient to explore flights when your schedule is flexible.

Re-verify and Check Promotions on Trip.com

Once you've found cheap dates and flights on Skyscanner,

don't book immediately. Instead, check the same dates and routes again on Trip.com.

Even if the flight prices displayed on Trip.com initially appear higher than on Skyscanner,

the actual amount at the payment stage can differ. So, make sure to check baggage inclusion, payment method benefits,

and any applicable coupons right until the very end.

Coupon, card, and easy payment benefits vary by season,

so instead of just looking at the discount text, try applying the actual coupons and compare!

there can be quite a price difference.

Incheon to Sydney One-Way Flight Price Comparison

If a layover flight is acceptable, **AirAsia X** was the cheapest.

For **Jetstar**, the prices were listed with varying baggage conditions.

**Vietnam Airlines**, while a layover flight, is a full-service airline,

so a 23kg baggage allowance is included.

By double-checking Skyscanner and Trip.com like this and

confirming conditions, you can find **discounted flight bookings**

**close to the lowest price**.

For Australia, travel expenses can be significant, and the flight cost

takes up a considerable portion, so compare prices and try to **book smartly**!

6. What to Check Before Cancelling Jetstar & Overall Review

What I realized while going through this flight cancellation is that

booking directly on the airline's official website isn't always the cheapest,

nor is using a booking platform always more advantageous.

If you're planning a long-distance family trip like ours

and there's a chance your travel period or destination city might change,

it's better to prioritize checking cancellation and modification policies.

Conversely, if your departure date is approaching and

your travel itinerary and dates are fixed,

I recommend meticulously comparing the final payment amounts across

official airline websites, flight comparison sites, and booking platforms

to make a smart decision!
