Be extremely cautious of locals who approach you offering help while you're buying or recharging your Istanbulkart. 99% of the time, these are scams.

They might demand money for their 'help' or even try to divert your funds to their own card.

I nearly fell victim to this scam a few years ago (around 2023), and I saw the same trick being pulled during my recent trip.

You can purchase an Istanbulkart at Istanbul Airport, major metro and tram stations, and key ferry terminals.

However, they aren't available at every single station.

In the past, finding these machines could be a bit tricky, which is why I actually bought my card in advance from back home. But on this recent trip, I noticed they were surprisingly easy to locate at larger stations and ferry docks.

Despite the prevalence of scammers near the machines and my initial worries about purchasing one, I found the process incredibly quick and easy – it took less than a minute!

First, place your Istanbulkart on the card reader area of the machine.

Without pressing any buttons, your current balance will automatically display.

I had 20.42 Lira remaining.

Simply insert the desired amount of cash – no need to press any extra buttons! Bills starting from 20 Lira are accepted.

I inserted 200 Lira, and after a 2 Lira service fee, 198 Lira was added to my card!

Interestingly, whether I added 100 Lira or 200 Lira, the service fee remained 2 Lira.

Because of this, I recommend topping up with 200 Lira or more from the start to maximize your value.

Also, note that credit card top-ups incur a 7 Lira fee, so paying with cash is more economical!

Older machines work the same way; just place your card on the reader to see your balance.
