When you travel to Istanbul, you might find yourself overwhelmed by the sheer variety of public transit—trams, buses, Tünel, metro, funiculars, and even metrobus! Today, let's break down one of the most convenient and scenic options: the Tram (Tramvay).
Istanbul Tram Lines
Istanbul's tram network is
broadly divided into modern trams and vintage heritage trams.
The modern lines—T1, T4, T5, and T6—connect the city center with residential districts. In particular, you'll find yourself riding the T1 line quite often, as it weaves right through the heart of Istanbul's main tourist hotspots.
On the other hand, the T2 and T3 lines feature restored, historic streetcars that function as both charming tourist attractions and handy short-distance transit.

The T1 Line
Running from Kabataş to Bağcılar, this line passes right through the Grand Bazaar, Sultanahmet (Blue Mosque), Eminönü Port, and the Galata Bridge.
With just this single line, you can cover almost all the must-see highlights of Istanbul's historic Old City.

The T2 Line
This nostalgic streetcar runs for just 1.6 km across 5 stops, connecting Taksim to Beyoğlu Tünel. A restored version of the vintage red trams that have operated since the 1920s, it serves as an iconic symbol of modern Istanbul. It glides directly down the middle of Istiklal Street, the heart of the city's bustling modern district.
Istiklal Street is a massive, bustling shopping avenue, much like London's Oxford Street or New York's Fifth Avenue. Packed with global fashion brands, fantastic restaurants, and delicious kaymak and baklava dessert shops, the street itself is a spectacle—whether you choose to ride the tram or stroll along the sidewalk.

T3 Line
This is the Kadıköy-Moda loop tram on the Asian side. It starts around Kadıköy İDO/İskele Camii and loops through Bahariye, Altıyol, and Moda Caddesi.
It's a short, slow-paced route, but it’s the perfect way to soak up Kadıköy’s unique vibe and explore the Moda area. A full loop takes about 20 minutes.
Kadıköy has a wonderfully authentic, local neighborhood feel. While Sultanahmet on the European side is very touristy, Kadıköy offers a completely different experience with its trendy local cafes and vintage markets. If you have some extra time, I highly recommend taking a ferry across the Bosphorus to spend a leisurely afternoon here!

T4 Line
This line runs from Topkapı to Mescid-i Selam. Since it's primarily a commuter route serving residential areas on the outer edges of the European side, such as Sultangazi and Gaziosmanpaşa, travelers rarely have a reason to ride it.
T5 Line
This scenic tram line runs along the Golden Horn shoreline from Eminönü to Alibeyköy Cep Otogarı.
Departing from Eminönü, it passes right through Fener and Balat, making it incredibly popular with travelers looking to explore the colorful houses and charming, winding alleys of these historic neighborhoods.
At Eyüpsultan, you can hop on the cable car to glide up to Pierre Loti Hill for breathtaking panoramic views. The final stop, Alibeyköy Cep Otogarı, is a major intercity bus terminal.

T6 Line
Opened in February 2024, this is Istanbul's newest line. It departs from Sirkeci at the eastern edge of the Old City and follows the Marmara coastline west to Kazlıçeşme.
(Also referred to as the T6 / U3 line)
The 25-minute train intervals are on the longer side, but it’s a highly convenient route if you’re planning a trip to the Yedikule Fortress. Plus, the famous kaymak shop "Boris’in Yeri" is located right near Kumkapı Station.

What is the Istanbulkart?
It’s a rechargeable transit card that grants you access to Istanbul's entire public transportation network, including trams, buses, ferries, and the metro.

If you read other Istanbulkart reviews, they often mention getting a transfer discount if you switch lines within 2 hours. However, when I used mine, the transfer discount wasn't applied at all.
From what I understand, the Istanbulkart issued to tourists runs on a different fare system than the ones used by locals, which is why we don't get those transfer discounts.
Even so, you'll be hopping on trams, metros, buses, and ferries constantly in Istanbul. If you have a longer itinerary or plan on riding public transit at least 10 times, buying an Istanbulkart is still by far the most convenient way to get around!
All About Istanbul Public Transit: Fares, Istanbulkart Purchase & Top-up Guide (As of March 2026)
It is recommended to use the T1 line. It runs from Kabataş to Bağcılar and passes through all the key attractions in the Old City, such as the Grand Bazaar, the Blue Mosque, and the Galata Bridge.
You can use the T6 line, which opened in February 2024. Although the departure interval is long at 25 minutes, you can visit Boris'in Yeri near Kumkapı Station and the fortress at Yedikule Station.
You can use the T3 line. It is a circular tram that goes around the Kadıköy and Moda areas, and it takes about 20 minutes to complete one loop.
The Istanbulkart used by tourists has a different fare system from the one for locals, so transfer discount benefits are not provided. The single ride fare is 42 TL, and the card purchase cost is 165 TL.
