During my trip to Türkiye in December 2025, I spent two days in Istanbul.
Instead of committing to a exhausting full-day tour of the main sights,
I looked into a half-day morning tour. I ended up booking one, absolutely loved it,
and wanted to share my itinerary and review with you!
I did some research and booked this Istanbul city half-day tour.
My travel buddies loved the itinerary too, especially because it was a morning-only tour
rather than a packed all-day event. It left us with plenty of free time in the afternoon
to explore the Grand Bazaar and other spots we wanted to see on our own!
We headed out early to make it to the meeting point for our morning tour.
On the way, we spotted a street vendor selling incredibly delicious-looking grilled corn,
so my friends and I bought some to share! :D
They sprinkled a bit of salt on the grilled corn, which actually made it taste surprisingly sweet!
It was quite chilly that morning, so eating warm grilled corn put us in the best mood.
Plus, it was great to fuel up so we weren't exploring on an empty stomach!
The Istanbul morning half-day tour I took
Since my travel companions and I met up early, we grabbed a seat at a nearby
Starbucks and snapped a photo of the iconic tram passing by.
It felt so wonderfully exotic. Looking at these photos makes me
miss the trip already!

The meeting point was Hippodrome Square, which is a historic site itself.
It's incredibly easy to find. Our guide even sent us a photo of the exact spot beforehand,
so I think they chose this location to make it hassle-free for everyone.
The Blue Mosque
Our morning half-day tour officially kicks off at the Blue Mosque.
The Blue Mosque is one of the most iconic landmarks in the historic areas of Istanbul,
a registered UNESCO World Heritage site.
As we walked through the entrance, we got a brief introduction,
followed by a much more detailed explanation once we stepped inside.
Morning is definitely the best time to visit the Blue Mosque.
In the afternoon, it gets packed with tour groups and crowds, making entry quite chaotic.
Going early lets you catch the beautiful morning sky and enjoy a much more
relaxed experience during the half-day tour.
There is an ablution area where locals wash their feet before entering the mosque for prayers,
and it was fascinating to see it actively being used.
There are a few important things to keep in mind
when visiting the Blue Mosque on your tour!
For women, you need to cover your head with a scarf (or a hood).
For men, shorts are not allowed. Make sure to dress appropriately beforehand
so you don't run into any issues at the entrance!
Also, you have to take off your shoes before entering the interior.
You'll place them in the shoe racks inside, so just be mindful
of your belongings to prevent losing them.
The main reason we chose this tour was our guide, Robert Halley.
He was incredibly engaging, highly fluent, and had glowing reviews.
He gave us a super detailed explanation of the Blue Mosque and even took some
gorgeous photos of us. It was a 10/10 experience!
The Istanbul Morning Half-Day Tour I Personally Took
The Obelisk Brought All the Way from Egypt
Our guide, Robert, gave us a detailed explanation about the Serpent Column
and the Obelisk that was brought all the way from Egypt.
Since he spoke fluent Korean, it was so easy to follow along.
Plus, he spoke directly into our audio transmitters,
so we could hear him perfectly even when it got noisy around us!
In Türkiye (Istanbul), you'll see so many cats roaming the streets.
They are incredibly gentle and clean, and they feel quite different from
stray cats back home—they are so friendly and love being around people!
If you look closely at the stone pedestal under the Obelisk,
you'll notice different carvings depending on which side you're looking at.
My memory is a bit fuzzy on whether it represented two different civilizations or kings,
but they say they were carved at completely different times!
After checking out the Blue Mosque, the Obelisk, and the Serpent Column,
we headed toward Hagia Sophia and got to hear a little backstory about our meeting spot.
Apparently, the German Fountain is still fully functional today
and is still used for washing hands!
We had a short break in the middle of our half-day Istanbul tour.
We had about 30 to 40 minutes before gathering again,
so we decided to try a popular local snack recommended by our guide.
It's a type of sesame bread (simit?), and the flavor changes depending on what you fill it with.
It was super popular among locals and tourists alike!
Since I visited in early December last year,
one side of Hagia Sophia was undergoing restoration work at the time.
Even from a distance, the mosque looked absolutely stunning.
Seeing it standing tall alongside the Turkish flag made it look even more beautiful!
Hagia Sophia Grand Mosque (Cathedral)
Once our little break was over, we all gathered up
and headed over to Hagia Sophia together.
Because we did the Istanbul tour on a weekend, it was packed with people.
But thanks to Fast-Track access, we got to skip the massive line and head right in.
Honestly, this perk alone made booking the tour totally worth it!
Hagia Sophia is split into the 1st and 2nd floors.
During our visit, only the 2nd floor was open to tourists. The building is absolutely massive,
with towering ceilings and beautiful murals adorned across the domes.
As we listened to the guide's explanation, it felt like we were playing a game of "I Spy" looking for hidden details,
and the time just flew by!
If I had visited without a guide on this half-day tour,
I probably would have just walked through thinking, "Oh, what a cool building," and left.
Having someone share all the fascinating stories made the experience so much richer.
The only slight downside was that while I was busy looking around,
I couldn't re-listen to the parts I missed or wanted to hear again.

Hagia Sophia (Ayasofya) Tour with a Byzantine Historian
The most famous treasures inside Hagia Sophia
are the Byzantine golden mosaics and the 'Deesis' mosaic.
Considering the passage of time and how close they came to being lost forever,
it's incredible how beautifully they've been preserved.
The Basilica Cistern (Yerebatan Sarnıcı)
This place is absolutely breathtaking—it was the main reason I chose this tour!
Right after Hagia Sophia, we headed right next door to
what is often called the "Underground Palace."
The scale of this massive subterranean cistern is so stunning
that you can't help but stand there in absolute awe.
If we hadn't had fast-track access through our licensed guide,
I honestly don't know what we would have done. Just thinking about it is stressful!
The queue was so massive that with a regular ticket, you'd easily wait over an hour
just to step foot inside.
Once you see this magical view, you'll understand why it's a non-negotiable stop.
It's truly magnificent, and if you're traveling to Istanbul,
this is absolutely one of those must-visit spots.
The atmosphere inside is so beautiful and unique
that if you visit with a friend who has a good eye, you'll walk away with some legendary photos.
The cistern is also famous for its ancient Medusa-headed pillars,
and recently, it's gained even more fame with new Medusa shadow art displays.
These carvings are incredibly old, and when you see them in person,
you'll be amazed by how well-preserved and detailed they actually are.
Our guide, Robert, mentioned that this specific Medusa shadow display
was a relatively recent installation.
Just like Florence's Uffizi Gallery is renowned for its Medusa masterpieces,
the Basilica Cistern in Istanbul, Türkiye,
is iconic for its own mysterious Medusa heads.
During my 2-night stay in Istanbul, I opted for a morning half-day tour
which finished up beautifully around 2 PM.
There are also full-day tours that cover all of Istanbul's major landmarks,
so you can easily choose the perfect option depending on your itinerary.
Personally, I was super satisfied with the half-day tour! The guide was incredibly kind
and knew every single perfect photo spot.
They'll even take great group photos for you if you're traveling as a family,

The tour gathers at the Hippodrome Square, visits the Blue Mosque and Hagia Sophia, and ends at the Basilica Cistern. The entire schedule concludes around 2:00 PM.
Women must wear a scarf or hat, and men are not allowed to enter wearing shorts. Additionally, you must take off your shoes before entering and place them in the indoor lockers, so please be careful not to lose them.
You can enter quickly even on weekends by using the fast track included in the tour. Inside, you will go up to the second floor to view the Byzantine gold mosaics and the Deesis mosaic.
If you purchase a general admission ticket, you have to wait about an hour to enter. However, if you use the fast track provided by the official guide-accompanied tour, you can enter immediately without waiting in a long line.
The fluent Korean-speaking guide will provide explanations about the historical sites using a dedicated audio receiver. Thanks to this, you can hear the explanations clearly even in noisy environments.
