Istanbul Ferry Routes & Piers Guide
Sights & Bosphorus Strait Cruises
Merhaba, everyone!
I'm Laura, your guide to traveling around Türkiye.
If I had to pick my absolute favorite way to get around Istanbul, it would definitely be the ferry. Even during the short crossing from the European side to the Asian side, you get to fully soak in the stunning views of the Bosphorus Strait.

Today, I’m putting together a complete guide to Istanbul's ferry routes, major piers, fares, and even Bosphorus Strait cruises!
Where to Catch the Ferry

To get from the Old City to the Asian side, you'll need to head to Eminönü Pier. It's incredibly easy to find—just hop off at Eminönü Station on the T1 tram line, and it's right there. Keep in mind that Eminönü is divided into several boarding areas depending on your destination.

You'll see 'KADIKÖY' or 'ÜSKÜDAR' written in big letters at the entrances, so just double-check the sign before walking in.
Destination | Location |
Kadıköy | The leftmost dock when standing with your back to Galata Bridge. If you're walking from Sirkeci, you'll run into this one first. |
Üsküdar | Slightly further in toward Galata Bridge, past the Kadıköy pier. |
Popular Routes & Timetables
Here are the routes most commonly used by travelers.
Departure | Arrival | Duration | Popularity
European Side Old City | Eminönü | Asian Side | Kadıköy | Approx. 25 mins | ★★★★★ |
Eminönü | Üsküdar | Approx. 15 mins | ★★★★☆
European Side New City | Karaköy | Kadıköy | Approx. 20 mins | ★★★☆☆
Kabataş | Üsküdar | Approx. 20 mins | ★★★☆☆ |

Ferry schedules can change on weekends and public holidays. If you're planning a late night out, it's always a good idea to double-check the last ferry time at the pier beforehand.
Key Attractions near Each Pier
Eminönü
This is the bustling heart of Istanbul's ferry network. Since the area is packed with iconic attractions, it's perfect for exploring before or after your ride.

On top of the Galata Bridge, you'll see locals patiently fishing, while underneath, there's a long row of stalls serving up delicious, freshly grilled mackerel sandwiches (balık ekmek).
Key Attractions

Karaköy
This pier is located just across the Galata Bridge. I caught a ferry from here to Balat—a colorful, historic neighborhood along the Golden Horn famous for its vibrant buildings, the Bulgarian Orthodox Church, and the Phanar Greek Orthodox College.

Key Attractions

Kabataş
As the terminus of the T1 tram line and the transfer point for the F1 Funicular to Taksim Square, Kabataş is a major transit hub. I once took the ferry to Üsküdar from here, and it sailed right past Dolmabahçe Palace—it looks totally different and even more majestic from the water compared to seeing it from land!

Key Attractions

Ortaköy
This spot is famous for its stunning viewpoint where you can capture the Bosphorus Bridge and Ortaköy Mosque in a single frame. There are plenty of great spots nearby serving kumpir (Turkish loaded baked potatoes), making it the perfect place to grab a bite.

Top Attractions

Bebek
The travel time is around 40 minutes, which is slightly longer than other routes, but the breathtaking views as you glide along the strait make it completely worth it. Bebek is one of Istanbul’s most upscale neighborhoods, boasting a trendy cafe street and a gorgeous seaside promenade where locals love to hang out and relax.

Top Attractions

Kadıköy
With local cafes, vintage shops, and lively markets tucked into every alleyway, this neighborhood has a completely different vibe compared to the European side. It’s perfect for a half-day exploration, and you can even ride a charming vintage tram!

Top Attractions

Üsküdar
It's quieter than Kadıköy, offering a deeper glimpse into local, authentic daily life. If you head up Çamlıca Hill, you'll be treated to a stunning panoramic view of downtown Istanbul and the Bosphorus Strait.

Top Attractions
Ferry Fares
(As of March 2026)
Unlike trams and buses, ferry fares vary by route.
Route | Fare |
Eminönü → Kadıköy | 59.28TL (~$1) |
Karaköy → Kadıköy | |
Kabataş → Kadıköy | 57.00TL (~$1) |
Eminönü → Üsküdar | 53.20TL (~$1) |
Ortaköy → Üsküdar | 47.10TL (~$1) |
Since using a standard credit or travel card can cost almost double, it’s highly recommended to get an Istanbulkart (local transit card) beforehand.
Bosphorus Strait Cruise
While ferries are public transit to get from point A to point B, a Bosphorus cruise is a sightseeing tour designed to show you all the iconic landmarks along the strait.

I ended up buying a ticket right at the Eminönü pier from one of the ticket sellers calling out "Bosphorus~ Bosphorus~ Bosphorus~" and paid 250TL on the spot. Keep in mind that when I went, they didn't accept cards—only cash!

The duration varies depending on the route, but the one I took lasted about an hour and a half. It was amazing to see Dolmabahçe Palace, Çırağan Palace, Ortaköy Mosque, the Bosphorus Bridge, and Rumeli Fortress from angles you just can't get from the shore!
