A trip to Hawaii can feel like you're spending money just by breathing!
With flights getting so affordable lately,
I've seen many people think, "Should I go?"
only to take a massive step back after looking up hotel prices.
Honestly, I couldn't believe my eyes when I first saw the rates myself...

Normally, when you look at Hawaii hotel rates:
✅ 4 to 5-star hotels: Well over ~$384 to ~$640+ per night
✅ Budget-friendly hotels: ~$192 to ~$256 per night
On top of that, you have parking fees (~$32 to ~$38 per day) + resort fees extra...💸
I kept thinking, "Is it really worth paying this much when I'm just sleeping there?"
After some serious research, I found the absolute
#1 recommended budget hotel in Hawaii:
the Ilima Hotel.

✨ Why I Chose the Ilima Hotel ✨ ✅ Prime location near Waikiki ✅ In-room kitchen for self-catering ✅ Free parking ✅ On-site laundry facilities ✅ Perfect for long-term stays |

I stayed in a Studio Standard room for
3 days and 2 nights, and today I’m sharing all the pros and cons—
plus some genius kitchen hacks that will easily
save you ~$64 on dining out!

If you're planning a road trip in Hawaii with a rental car,
you already know hotel parking fees are no joke;
Normally, parking alone costs $40–$50 a day,
but the Ilima Hotel offers completely free parking!
Just by staying here for 2 nights,
you're practically saving ~$83...
I was a bit worried because some reviews
mentioned that parking spots fill up quickly if you arrive late,
but we parked before 7 PM
and there were plenty of open spaces.

Even if it's full, there are free street parking options nearby,
so no need to stress!
Some online sources claim there is no resort fee,
but let me set the record straight: there is one.
I was skeptical too, but I definitely had to pay it at check-in.
But hey, if you think of it as paying the resort fee instead of
those crazy parking fees at other hotels, it pretty much evens out, right?

The total amount I paid for 3 days and 2 nights was $384
(including all taxes and resort fees)
This price right in the heart of Waikiki?
This is hands down the ultimate budget-friendly Hawaii experience.
Given how expensive Hawaii accommodations usually are,
this place is an absolute steal.

You can spot the cute pink building from miles away!
It's located right next to the Ala Wai Canal, making it the perfect spot
for morning jogs and strolls.
I was slightly worried since it's an older hotel,
but it is incredibly well-maintained.

The cleanliness of the Ilima Hotel was top-notch.
While it has a retro, older vibe, everything was spotless.
Best of all, despite having a full kitchen, I didn’t see a single bug!
(And honestly, that’s the most important part!)
I stayed in the Studio Standard room,
and even with two beds, it was surprisingly spacious
and very comfortable.
You can also do laundry at the Ilima Hotel!
There is a laundry room on floor P3,
(washers and dryers are $2 each)
Now I see why so many long-term guests stay here.

There's also a pool just past the lobby,
but absolutely no one was using it (myself included).
It's more like a "just so you know it's there" kind of size? ^^
Better to just head straight to Waikiki Beach!
Naturally, they offer luggage storage
both before check-in and after check-out.
And if you get lucky and your room is ready,
early check-in is also possible!

As you probably already know,
the cost of living in Hawaii is absolutely brutal.
With tips included, a single meal can easily set you back ~$32 to ~$38 in the blink of an eye.
Thankfully, the Ilima Hotel is a residence-style hotel,
meaning it comes with a fully equipped kitchen!

They have everything from a microwave, cooktop, fridge, pots,
pans, utensils, to dish soap and sponges,
making it incredibly convenient to use.

And let me let you in on my ultimate pro-tip:
pack a Korean herbal soup packet (the kind used for Samgyetang) before you leave.
Then, just grab some pre-prepped raw chicken from Foodland or Walmart,
throw in the herbal packet, and boil!
Honestly, having this after a day of swimming is heaven.
The moment you take that first spoonful of broth,
all your travel fatigue instantly melts away, and you feel completely re-energized.

You can even cook ramen noodles in the leftover broth afterward!
Doing this saves you a massive amount on food.
Another great idea is buying poke without rice
and pairing it with instant microwavable rice!
If you're looking for a budget-friendly hotel in Hawaii,
booking a place with a kitchen is an absolute must.

To keep things 100% real (otherwise it'll sound like a fake review haha),
let's talk about some of the downsides of the Ilima Hotel.
First off, the wall-mounted hairdryer
in the bathroom is... really not great.
It's not that the airflow is weak,
but if you have long hair like me,
you'll literally feel trapped in the bathroom while drying it (?)
Luckily, I always pack my Dyson Airwrap
or a dual-voltage hairdryer whenever I travel abroad,
so I was saved...

Also, the interior walks a very fine line between "antique" and "dated."
It almost feels like visiting an American grandma's house?
But honestly, the longer you stay, the more it grows on you!
Oh, and here's another huge plus:
check-out at the Ilima Hotel is at 12:00 PM,
giving you plenty of time to pack up without rushing!

With the exchange rates being so high right now, you might as well save money
on accommodation and spend it on extra Stüssy shopping
or another delicious steak dinner...
Staying at the budget-friendly Ilima Hotel in Hawaii
is a choice you won't regret.

If you want to search all booking sites at once,
I highly recommend HotelsCombined.
It makes comparing and finding the lowest price super quick and easy!
(Based on February weekdays; prices may vary depending on exchange rates and booking timing)

It might not be a 5-star luxury resort,
but with a full kitchen and free parking alone, there are plenty of reasons to return to
my cozy, welcoming home-away-from-home in Hawaii.
It saved me so much on my Hawaii travel budget,
so if you're looking for a budget-friendly place to stay in Waikiki,
I highly recommend the Ilima Hotel!

Parking is free, and if the hotel parking lot is full, you can use nearby free parking lots. However, unlike some information online, there is a separate resort fee that must be paid at check-in.
The kitchen is fully equipped with an induction cooktop, microwave, refrigerator, pots, frying pans, tableware, and dish detergent. You can save a lot on food by bringing Samgyetang (ginseng chicken soup) tea bags from Korea and buying raw chicken at a local supermarket to cook, or by buying poke without rice and eating it with instant rice.
Yes, there is a laundry room located on the P3 floor of the hotel. You can use the washing machines and dryers for $2 each, which is convenient for washing swimsuits or for long-term stays.
The hair dryer is fixed to the bathroom wall, which can be inconvenient as you have to stay in the bathroom to dry your hair. If you have long hair, it is recommended to bring your own dual-voltage hair dryer.
