Ibaraki Day Trip from Tokyo 2026: Coastal Charms & Hidden Gems
Dreaming of an authentic Japanese escape? Discover Ibaraki, a tranquil haven just a short ride from Tokyo, offering stunning natural landscapes and serene cultural sites.

With so much to see, from Hitachi Seaside Park to Isosaki Shrine,
and unlike the hustle and bustle of big cities, it's not swarming with tourists,
allowing you to truly unwind and immerse yourself in nature – that's Ibaraki!
Today, let's dive into all the details about how to get to Ibaraki, recommended travel itineraries, and more,
for your perfect Ibaraki adventure!

Ibaraki is a region located northeast of Tokyo,
where the Pacific coastline blends beautifully with mountains, lakes, and rivers,
creating a truly captivating natural landscape.
Rather than a bustling tourist hotspot, it boasts a strong sense of peace and
a laid-back atmosphere, making it a perfect fit for those looking to enjoy a serene getaway near Tokyo.
Location & How to Get There

Originally, there was a direct flight route from Cheongju to Ibaraki Airport,
but due to recent increases in fuel surcharges,
the number of flights was reduced, and the direct flights have now been discontinued.
Now, you can either go on a day bus tour from Tokyo,
or take a JR train or a bus.
From Tokyo Station, you'll head to Mito Station, which is the city center.

A train ticket costs ~$25, while a bus ticket is ~$14,
and there's a significant difference in travel time: 1 hour 15 minutes for the train, and 2 hours for the bus.

The reason to go to Mito Station is its excellent accessibility to all tourist attractions,
plus there are plenty of large shopping malls and great restaurants.
Since Ibaraki's tourist spots are quite spread out,
most independent travelers usually rent a car.
Conveniently, there are car rental companies right next to Mito Station.
*Transportation in Japan can be expensive, with tours often costing over ~$73,
but currently, you can book at a special price, starting from around ~$66!
If you prefer a hassle-free day trip, I highly recommend a tour.
Day Trip Itinerary

For a smooth flow, it's best to visit Hitachi Seaside Park, Isosaki Shrine,
and Kairakuen in that order.
The Ushiku Daibutsu (Giant Buddha) is quite a distance from the other attractions,
so I recommend visiting only if you have ample time.

Our first stop is Hitachi Seaside Park,
famous for its stunning Nemophila flowers.
You can see them throughout April,
which is why this time of year draws the biggest crowds.

Hitachi Seaside Park blossoms with different flowers throughout all four seasons:
Nemophila in spring, sunflowers in summer,
cosmos and kochia in autumn, and tulips in winter.

While the blue nemophila fields are definitely the most famous,
the vibrant red kochia are absolutely stunning too,
so I highly recommend a trip to Ibaraki in October!

Isosaki Shrine is a shrine located in Oarai Town,
and it's famous for its Kamiiso-no-Torii gate, which stands majestically on the rocks.

The torii gate is said to have been built on the very spot where a deity descended in 856,
and it's a popular spot where many gather to witness the breathtaking sunrise emerging between the gates.
The shrine itself isn't huge,
so it won't take long to explore.

Kairakuen Garden is one of Japan's three most famous gardens,
and it's most renowned during plum blossom season.
Unfortunately, there were no plum blossoms when I visited,
but the garden is expansive, making it a wonderful place for a leisurely stroll.

If you arrive before 9 AM, admission is free,
so you could definitely make it your first stop of the day.

The Ushiku Daibutsu is a massive Buddha statue, standing at an impressive 120 meters tall,
and its location is quite a distance from the center of Ibaraki City.
It's not a place typically included in tours,
so I wouldn't particularly recommend it for a day trip.

However, seeing it in person reveals a scale far more overwhelming than in photos, and there's plenty to explore, including the interior of the Great Buddha and its surrounding gardens.
Local Delights

If I had to pick one food you absolutely must try in Ibaraki,
I would wholeheartedly recommend Stamina Ramen.
Unlike typical Japanese ramen with clear broth,
this one boasts a broth made with a sweet, spicy, and thick ankake sauce.
It's a flavor I'd never experienced before,
so it's hard to describe perfectly, but it is truly delicious!

Saza Coffee is a local brand that originated in Ibaraki,
and their most frequently mentioned item is Shogun Coffee.
It's a French-style dark roast coffee that pairs wonderfully with milk,
made by deeply roasting Sumatra beans from Indonesia,
resulting in a rich, heavy, and intensely sweet flavor.

Inside Hitachi Seaside Park, you'll also find plenty of unique treats typical of tourist destinations, such as nemophila ade,
nemophila ice cream, and more.
Just an hour and a half away from Tokyo,
lies the charming suburban city of Ibaraki!
If you're tired of bustling city trips, I highly recommend a relaxed itinerary to
explore Ibaraki.
