Hello everyone! 😊
Today, I'm bringing you a review of my hike up **Hwangseoksan Mountain** in Hamyang, Gyeongnam – famous as one of the **Korea Forest Service's 100 Great Mountains and a Blackyak BAC certified peak.**
Hwangseoksan is a mountain with plenty to see during your hike, thanks to its magnificent rocky ridges and Hwangseoksanseong Fortress blending together beautifully.
This time, I took the **Ujeon Village Sabangdam Dam shortest course**, which is the quickest way to tackle Hwangseoksan. 🥾
The round trip is only about 5km, so at first, I thought, "This will be quicker than I expected!"
But once I started climbing, I realized it was quite the workout! **The incline becomes pretty steep after Pibawi Rock, and the section from Hwangseoksanseong Fortress to the summit even involves using rocks and ropes.**

**The Hwangseoksan shortest course: short distance, but spicy steepness!**
Based on my direct hiking experience, I'll summarize everything from **parking information to restrooms, difficulty by section, and important precautions for the Hwangseoksanseong fork in the road!**

🚗 Where to Park at Hwangseoksan?
Hwangseoksan Ujeon Village Sabangdam Dam
The trailhead for the Hwangseoksan shortest course is **near Ujeon Village Sabangdam Dam.**
However, parking space isn't exactly plentiful.
Based on what I saw, there's **space for about 6-8 cars**, so it's a good idea to arrive early on weekends or during peak hiking seasons.
Especially since the village access road up to the Sabangdam Dam is a **narrow single lane**, it can be difficult for cars to pass each other if one is coming from the opposite direction.
🚨 Therefore, I highly recommend driving **slowly and cautiously**!
Rather than forcing your way too far in just because there's *some* parking, it's important to carefully check your parking spot to avoid obstructing other vehicles.

🚽 Restroom: Before You Start!
Hwangseoksan Ujeon Village Sabangdam Dam
I really want to emphasize this point.
**There are no public restrooms near the Sabangdam Dam.** 😭
So, it's best to use the restroom beforehand, before you start your hike.
The places I recommend are:
✔️ **Ujeon Village Hall Plaza Restroom**
✔️ **Gunjajeong Pavilion Public Restroom**
🥾 Hwangseoksan Shortest Course Hiking Review
Hwangseoksan Shortest Course: Sabangdam Dam Course
① Sabangdam Dam → Pibawi Rock
The beginning starts with a relatively comfortable **forest path.**
There isn't an immediate steep incline, so it was good for warming up and walking at a leisurely pace.
Especially in summer or early autumn, there can be quite a few insects on the forest path, so I recommend spraying on some **insect repellent** before you start. 🦟
In the beginning, you might think, "This isn't too difficult, is it?"
But the real challenge begins a little further on. 😅
② Pibawi Rock → Hwangseoksanseong Fortress
**The atmosphere completely changes after you pass Pibawi Rock.**
The incline definitely gets steeper, and **a seemingly endless path of loose, uneven rocks emerges, so you really need to watch your footing. My legs felt surprisingly wobbly! 😂**
While the round trip distance is short, it feels like you're gaining altitude quickly, making it a **surprisingly physically demanding section.**
I also initially took it lightly just looking at the distance, but as I climbed, I thought, "This is tougher than I expected!" 😂
Still, there's no need to push yourself to climb quickly.
If you find yourself out of breath, take a short break and **it's best to ascend slowly at your own pace.**
⚠️ Pay close attention here!
There's a fork in the path near Hwangseoksanseong Fortress.
This part is really important!
First-time visitors might easily **unwittingly take the right-hand fortress wall path** because the walls are so prominent.

However, to go to Hwangseoksan Summit:
👉 **Summit direction = Left forest path ⭕**
👉 **Right fortress wall path = Caution ❌**
For those heading to the summit of Hwangseoksan,
make sure to check for the left forest path at the fork!
If you're like me and not super confident with directions,
it's a good idea to keep this in mind beforehand. 😆
And Hwangseoksanseong Fortress itself is a sight
too amazing to miss during your Hwangseoksan hike,
so it's definitely worth a quick look around.

③ Hwangseoksanseong Fortress → Hwangseoksan Summit
After arriving at Hwangseoksanseong Fortress, on the way to the summit, you'll encounter rocky sections and parts where you climb holding onto ropes to ascend. 🪨
It's a short section, but it's quite steep,
and you'll really feel like you're climbing rocks,
making it one of the more thrilling parts of the Hwangseoksan hike.
Love the rope sections! Haha!
Just take your time, check your footing carefully, and you'll be fine ascending.
Especially, if it has just rained, the rocks
can be slippery, so it's best to proceed with caution.
For these rocky sections, I highly recommend
wearing hiking boots with excellent grip.
Also, since there are sections where you'll be climbing with ropes,
bringing hiking gloves will make it much more comfortable to ascend while protecting your hands.
While the shortest course for Hwangseoksan is indeed short in distance,
it features these rocky sections,
which means the perceived difficulty is actually higher than you might expect.
🏔️Finally, the Hwangseoksan Summit!
Hamyang Hwangseoksan Shortest Course
Now, keep ascending the wooden stairs, and you'll finally reach the summit!

Once you reach the top, the panoramic mountain scenery unfolds in every direction,
giving you a truly breathtaking and liberating feeling! 😊
It was tough climbing up,
but once you're standing on the summit, there's such a sense of accomplishment.
Indeed, I think we climb mountains
for the incredible views from the top!
The summit marker is located on a rock, so it's important to carefully check your footing as you move around!!
Summit area is narrow ⚠️
Once we reached the summit, the panoramic mountain scenery of Hamyang stretching in every direction was truly a magnificent spectacle.
⭐ Overall Review: Hwangseoksan Shortest Course
Hamyang Hwangseoksan
In a word, the Hwangseoksan shortest course is:
“A fantastic mountain for a short but intense adventure!”
At approximately 5km, the distance isn't overwhelming,
but after Pibawi Rock, a steep ascent and rocky path continue,
and the section from Hwangseoksanseong Fortress to the summit includes rocky and rope sections, so you'll definitely get a proper workout.
What's more,
you get to experience Hwangseoksanseong Fortress, amazing rock features, and breathtaking summit views
all in one go, which made the hiking satisfaction quite high! 👍
However, if you only look at the name 'shortest course'
and expect a very easy hike,
you might be a little surprised.
It's a short distance, but I'd consider it a challenging intermediate-to-advanced course due to the steep inclines,
so it's best to prepare with that in mind.
📌 Limited parking space → Arrive early
📌 Restrooms → Use before reaching the check dam
📌 Hwangseoksanseong Fortress fork → Left forest path!
Even if you only remember these three things,
you'll have a much smoother and more enjoyable trip.
If you're looking for a mountain to hike quickly in Hamyang,
or planning to conquer one of Korea's 100 Famous Mountains,
I highly recommend the Hwangseoksan Woocheon Village Check Dam Shortest Course! ⛰️💚
