Hotel Relief Kokura Annex Review: Free Food & Lounge
Looking for the best value stay in Kitakyushu? Check out our review of Hotel Relief Kokura Annex, featuring budget rooms and unlimited free daily meals.
Recently, more travelers are venturing beyond Tokyo and Osaka to explore Japan's charming smaller cities. While I usually stick to the major metropolises, a 2026 trip to Fukuoka gave me the perfect excuse to visit Kitakyushu (specifically the Kokura area).
Just a 15-minute bullet train (Shinkansen) ride or a 50-minute limited express trip from Fukuoka, Kitakyushu is becoming a major hotspot for international travelers looking for authentic local vibes. Direct flights are even starting to pop up, making it more accessible than ever.
Since Kokura Station is the heart of Kitakyushu, most of the best accommodations are clustered right around it.
I recently stayed at the Hotel Relief Kokura Annex, and I want to share my honest review to help you plan your next trip to this hidden gem of a city.
Let's cut to the chase: for a weekday stay in June 2026, I paid just ~$46 per night.
Overall Value for Money: ★★★★
Room & Bathroom: ★★★★
Cleanliness: ★★★★
Breakfast & Amenities: ★★★★☆
The absolute biggest perk of this hotel is the incredible free food and lounge access (breakfast and dinner options) located on the first floor.

Crucial Booking Warning:
A quick word of caution when booking: the "Standard Cabin" room type (which uses a shared bathroom) is essentially an internet cafe cubicle with a chair and a PC—not a traditional hotel room! Don't just click the cheapest option blindly. I initially made this mistake due to the jaw-droppingly low price, but immediately paid an upgrade fee at the front desk to switch to a standard Double Room.

Hotel Relief Kokura Annex
Hotel Relief Kokura Annex is phenomenally located just under a 10-minute walk (about 0.5 miles) from Kokura Station.
You're also just a 5-minute stroll (0.2 miles) from the bustling Uomachi Gintengai shopping arcade, and less than a 15-minute walk (0.7 miles) from Kokura Castle and the Riverwalk Kitakyushu complex.

Given the budget-friendly price point, the rooms and bathrooms are standard but perfectly comfortable.
There is enough floor space to fully open a standard suitcase, and the room comes equipped with a mini-fridge and basic amenities. One quirky feature is a small sink right in the main room area (though actual cooking isn't allowed).
The bathroom water pressure is excellent, and the hot water gets plenty hot.
But as I mentioned earlier, the absolute best part of Hotel Relief Kokura Annex is the complimentary food and lounge space.
The hotel occupies floors 3 through 8, while the 1st and 2nd floors serve as a Japanese-style manga cafe and lounge.
You have free access to tens of thousands of manga volumes. Even though they're mostly in Japanese, it's a fantastic cultural vibe to soak in while you relax.
The Best Perk: Unlimited Free Food
Complimentary Breakfast & Lounge Access
When you book, all standard room types include "breakfast." But it's much more than that!
The 1st-floor lobby features a free food bar stocked with udon, Japanese curry, bread, and drinks.
While they call it "breakfast," the udon, rich Japanese curry, and beverage bar (including coffee) are available freely from 6:00 AM to 10:00 PM. This means you can easily grab a casual dinner here too!
Technically, the signs say lounge access is paid before check-in or after check-out, but the atmosphere is very relaxed and welcoming.
The drink bar itself is open 24 hours a day.
The absolute highlight, however, is the freshly baked bread served daily at 7:00 AM and 3:00 PM.
Think warm croissants, sweet corn bread, potato cheese pastries, matcha buns, and chocolate chip rolls. Freshly baked bread while traveling is pure joy.
You can enjoy these morning treats right at 7:00 AM alongside coffee, lattes, tea, and other assorted beverages.
The automatic Nescafe machines whip up everything from Americanos and lattes to hot chocolate and matcha lattes, which was a very nice touch.
Because the bread is baked in-house, the quality is far above average for a budget hotel.
Just be warned: the freshly baked goods run out fast! Guests literally start lining up at 7:00 AM to grab the best selection.
If you miss the bread, you can still enjoy a hearty bowl of rice with curry, or make yourself a hot bowl of udon directly in the lounge.
In the mornings, they even provide hard-boiled eggs, raw eggs, and traditional natto (fermented soybeans).
You're also fully allowed to take your food and drinks from the lounge up to your room, which is a massive convenience if you prefer dining in private.
While it's not a massive international buffet, getting unlimited bread, udon, and curry for a room rate of around ~$46 makes this undeniably the best value hotel in Kokura, Kitakyushu. It's a fantastic way to save on dining costs while traveling.
Because Kitakyushu is still a relatively under-the-radar destination compared to Tokyo or Osaka, hotel prices remain incredibly reasonable.
Getting this level of complimentary food included in such a low room rate is a massive advantage.
With clean, comfortable rooms and an unbeatable location, I highly recommend Hotel Relief Kokura Annex as the ultimate budget-friendly stay in Kitakyushu.
