Ever found yourself tossing and turning at night, worried about train tickets selling out while planning your dream Japan itinerary?
My spouse and I were in the exact same boat when we prepared for our last trip. We weren't just looking to get from Fukuoka to Beppu; we wanted the full experience – savoring an ekiben (station Bento box) on the train and enjoying the scenic views outside our window.
After experiencing it firsthand, I realized something crucial: the Hakata to Beppu route is incredibly popular with travelers. Instead of thinking, "I'll just buy tickets when I get there," booking in advance offers so much more peace of mind!
I've put together my best tips for booking your train tickets from Hakata to Beppu, based on my own journey. Let's dive in!
First things first, you need to know how to purchase your train tickets. We opted for the most reliable method: the official JR Kyushu website.
Train reservations in Japan typically open one month before the departure date, at 10 AM Japan Standard Time. If you're planning to ride popular trains like the Yufuin no Mori, that's your golden window!

Begin by accessing the official JR Kyushu website. It's important to make sure you're on the Japanese version of the site.
The English-language (or Korean-language) support sites only sell standard tickets. This means you won't have access to special discount fares like the "Kyushu Net Ticket" or "Kyushu Net Hayatoku 3" (early bird special).
Don't worry if the site is in Japanese! You can easily use Google Translate to view the page in English.
The first step is to register for an account. Click the "New Member Registration" button on the right.
Next, you'll need to verify your email. Then, you'll be asked to enter your name in Kanji and Katakana.
Sometimes, due to differences in character sets, your Kanji name might not register correctly. If this happens, you can simply enter your name in Hiragana in the Kanji name field.
You can convert your name to Hiragana and Katakana using the website below:
For the address, you'll need to enter a Japanese address. I simply used Hakata Station's address. Enter the postal code 812-0012, then click "Search Address," and the rest of the fields should auto-populate. And just like that, your registration is complete!
On this page, select your departure and arrival stations, along with your desired date and time.
For reference, Hakata Station is listed as 博多, and Beppu Station is 別府 (大分県).
After searching for trains, you'll see four types of tickets. The one furthest to the right is the "Kyushu Net Hayatoku 3," which is the most affordable option.
The Kyushu Net Hayatoku 3 ticket can only be booked up to 3 days before your departure date.
You can book for up to 8 people at a time, so if you're traveling with a larger group, I recommend making two separate reservations.
Once your reservation is complete, you'll need to decide whether to receive your tickets as a QR code or a physical paper ticket.
We chose the QR ticket option, and it was incredibly convenient. You simply scan the QR code and pass through the ticket gate directly.
However, based on my experience, the QR code issuance process wasn't always seamless.
If your QR code isn't issued properly, you'll receive an email notification. You can then go to your reservation details and reset the collection method. It's a bit of a hassle as you might have to switch to a paper ticket and then back to a QR ticket, but it's manageable.
Despite this minor inconvenience, we still chose the QR code because we felt exchanging for a physical ticket on the day of travel would take even longer.
Once the QR tickets are successfully issued, a unique link will be provided for each passenger. Simply scan the QR code from this link when boarding the train.
If you've managed to snag a Kyushu Net Hayatoku 3 ticket, you've likely already booked a reserved seat. But for those who might have missed out, this section is for you!
If only standard tickets, E-tickets, or Kyushu Net Tickets are left, you might wonder if a non-reserved seat is an option. From my perspective, I would definitely recommend a reserved seat.
The journey from Hakata to Beppu takes approximately 2 hours on the Limited Express Sonic.
While you might get lucky and find a non-reserved seat, if the train is full and you have to stand in the aisle, you'll be exhausted before your trip even begins!
Especially if you're traveling with family or a partner, there's a special joy in sitting together and sharing an ekiben.
To avoid any surprises during the booking process, make sure to check these three things:
1. Always Carry the Credit Card Used for Payment
If you plan to pick up your tickets at the station, you absolutely must bring the physical credit card you used for the purchase. Without it, you might not be able to collect your tickets, even with a confirmed reservation!
2. Confirm QR Ticket Issuance
If you chose the QR ticket option, double-check that it has been properly issued! Try accessing the link sent via email in advance to ensure it works.
3. The Importance of Booking Time
Weekend services and popular time slots can fill up surprisingly fast. Once your travel dates are firm, it's best for your peace of mind to book your tickets on the website as early as possible.
If you arrive at Hakata Station a little early, why not stop by an ekiben shop? Thanks to the carefully chosen ekiben we enjoyed, our 2-hour journey to Beppu felt like an integral part of our adventure. However, if you're prone to motion sickness, I'd recommend skipping the meal on board!
Ultimately, travel isn't just about how perfectly you've prepared, but how comfortably and joyfully you experience it.
By booking in advance, you can shed unnecessary worries and simply focus on the passing scenery and the excitement of your trip. I hope this guide helps you kickstart your Beppu adventure!
