There's space for about six cars in the restaurant's courtyard, but it's not very spacious. We recommend checking with the restaurant for external parking options.
Geummokseo is nestled in a quiet alley just off the main Gwangyang-eup Seocheonbyeon Bulgogi Street. While I've visited several Blue Ribbon restaurants in the past, not all of them lived up to their hype. However, seeing the stickers at the entrance, proudly displaying **14 consecutive years** of Blue Ribbon recognition from **2013 to 2026**, sparked a genuine curiosity. Could this one be different?
The atmosphere immediately felt more authentic, tucked away from the bustling main street. It exuded a tranquil, traditional charm that made it feel like a true local's secret.
2. Inside Geummokseo: A Welcoming Ambiance

From the outside, Geummokseo looks like a charming, typical Korean home. Step inside, and you'll find a clean, comfortable, and inviting Korean BBQ restaurant atmosphere.
They have well-equipped private rooms, making it a great spot for family gatherings, especially with parents, or for a quiet group meeting.
We arrived after 5:00 PM on a Saturday and thankfully, there was no waiting. I'd heard stories about long queues, so we were pleasantly surprised!
3. The Menu

The menu at Geummokseo features Gwangyang Bulgogi as its star, offering both Korean Hanwoo beef and imported beef options. They also have a solid selection of hearty meal options like various stews (tang), cold noodles (naengmyeon), and soybean paste stew (doenjang jjigae).
We didn't order everything at once; the bulgogi was so delicious, we kept adding more!
4. Geummokseo Food Review: So Good, the Rice Disappeared!

Once seated, they promptly brought out the charcoal grill. What was unique was that they provided individual tongs for each person. Since Hanwoo bulgogi slices are thin and cook quickly, this thoughtful gesture allowed everyone to grill their meat to their preferred doneness without it burning, which was a nice touch.

True to Jeollanam-do tradition, the side dishes were incredibly diverse and plentiful. It wasn't just typical BBQ joint sides; it felt like a heartfelt spread, showing genuine care to provide a satisfying meal.
The kimchi, in particular, was outstanding, pairing perfectly with both rice and meat. Just a heads-up, it has a slightly sour kick, so it might not be for everyone.

The quality of the meat was truly superb. Even for someone like me, who's not an expert on meat (beyond eating it!), the marbling was beautiful. The portions were also surprisingly generous. We initially ordered two servings for two people, and it looked so abundant we almost thought it was three!
In fact, we actually tried to order three servings of Hanwoo beef, but the staff member seemed to mishear and said, "Two servings of Hanwoo, coming right up!" We were a bit unsure at first but started eating anyway. It was only when we later ordered an additional single serving that we realized the initial amount truly was just two servings. That's how generous the portions seemed!

The thinly sliced Hanwoo bulgogi cooks quickly on the grill. It's subtly marinated and delicious on its own, but when paired with the chives, onions, and dipping sauce, the combination is simply perfect. The meat was so tender that the rice just kept going down easily.

These photos show the amount for one additional serving. Even when we ordered extra, the portions remained substantial, right?

The doenjang jjigae (soybean paste stew) wasn't exceptionally unique, but it was the perfect warm and comforting addition after indulging in plenty of bulgogi, making the meal feel even more complete and satisfying.
5. Overall Review

Sometimes, when you keep ordering more rice at a BBQ restaurant, you might feel a little awkward or get a side-eye from the staff. But here, the owner was not only understanding but approached us with a friendly smile. And when we left, another owner bid us farewell as if we were long-time regulars, making the experience not just about the delicious food, but also the heartwarming hospitality.
If you're looking for an authentic local restaurant in Gwangyang that won't disappoint, I highly recommend Geummokseo for its generous hospitality and top-notch bulgogi!
